Special Introductory Price For All-New Hyundai Kona SUV
Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors has introduced the Hyundai Kona compact SUV, spoiling Malaysian buyers with another B-segment choice. There are three variants of the Hyundai Kona available i.e. the Standard, Active, and Turbo, priced at RM123,888, RM138,888 and RM151,888 respectively. However, HSDM is offering a special introductory price for a limited time on the Kona i.e. RM115,888, RM130,888, and RM143,888 respectively. The special prices represent the on-the-road prices in Peninsular Malaysia excluding insurance, but with the sales tax exemption. The Hyundai Kona comes as a CBU (completely built-up) from South Korea.
The Standard and Active variants are powered by a 2.0L Nu MPI engine which produces 149 hp @ 6,200 rpm and 180 Nm @ 4,000 rpm, mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the range-topping Kona Turbo gets a 1.6L Gamma T-Gdi which has 177 hp @ 5,500 rpm and 265 Nm of torque @ 1,500 – 4,500 rpm. Hyundai claims that peak torque delivery from a lower rpm gives the Kona an advantage over competitors in terms of responsiveness and performance. The turbo engine is coupled to a 7-speed EcoShift dual clutch transmission (DCT) for quicker, more efficient shifts.
The Standard variant is fitted with 17″ alloy wheels while the Active and Turbo variants are fitted with 18″ alloys.
Named after the western side of the Big Island of Hawaii, the Hyundai Kona is designed with an outlook that appeals to the younger generation of buyers as well as those with active lifestyles. Its “urban smart armour” exterior features aggressive body styling which complements a low and wide stance for a more athletic look. This ‘armour’ incorporates Hyundai’s new identity with a cascading grille with mesh pattern, flared fenders and a composite headlamp design with LED headlights and daytime running lights (the Standard uses halogen headlights). Like the front lights, the tail lights are also split, with the brake lights in a separate cluster from the reverse and signal lights.
Its long-ish wheelbase (2,600 mm) and short overhangs help with handling while still providing for a spacious cabin despite the relatively compact size and low roofline. Carrying on the ‘active lifestyle’ philosophy, the cabin has vibrant contrasting elements such as the coloured seatbelts and interior trim. Grey coloured interior trim and Black seatbelts are used with the Lake Silver, Phantom Black, Blue Lagoon and Ceramic Blue exterior colours; while Red seatbelts and Red interior trim are paired with the Phantom Black and Pulse Red exterior colours; and Lime seatbelts and Lime interior trim for the Chalk White. As an aside, there are five body colour choices, in case you missed it. Further, the Turbo gets a contrasting black roof for a more distinctive appearance.
Gadgetry includes an infotainment system with audio / navigation display in a floating 7″ touchscreen that includes voice command, rear view monitor, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The Active and Turbo variants also get an 8″ head-up display. Other distinguishing features include Wireless Phone Charging and Driver Attention Warning System (Turbo only) .
Advanced driving safety features are getting trendy and the Hyundai Kona also rides the same wave, though they are mostly found only in the top-of-the-range Turbo. Safety features include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), High Beam Assist (HBA), and Driver Attention Warning (DAW). The first feature uses a front-facing camera and radar, while the other features use the camera only.
Two safety features that can be found in both the Active and Turbo variants are the Blind Spot Collision Warning (BCW) and Rear Cross Traffic Collision Warning (RCCW).
The Hyundai Kona is covered by a five-year or 300,000 km (whichever comes first) warranty.
