The 10th generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class is officially in Malaysia with four variants for you to choose – E 200 Avantgarde, E 250 Avantgarde, E 250 Exclusive and E 300 AMG. However, only the price of the E 200 Avantgarde has been announced – RM 395,888 (on-the-road sans insurance), as the other variants will be available later in the year (E 250 – September; E 300 – November).
Dubbed the W213, the new E-Class is fully imported pending local assembly. All variants will use the same 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine in different states of tune – E 200 : 184 hp, 300 Nm; E 250 : 211 hp, 350 Nm and E 300 : 245 hp, 370 Nm. The E 200 has a claimed 0 – 100 km/h time of 7.7 seconds. All variants come equipped with the ECO start/stop function and are paired to new 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic gearbox.
Physically, when compared to its predecessor, the new W213 has a wheelbase that is 65 mm longer (2,939 mm) and its body, 43 mm longer (4,923 mm) allowing for more cabin space; kneeroom increased by 6 mm. It is however, 2 mm narrower (1,852 mm) and 3 mm lower (1.468 mm) but with improved rear shoulder room (+4 mm).
One of the highlights of the E-Class interior is the 2 wide-screen, high-resolution 12.3″ displays housed within a glass cover to look like one very wide instrument cluster. You can choose 3 different display styles – Classic, Sport and Progressive. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has limited units of the E 200 equipped with analog meters if you prefer it less ‘high tech’. This is priced RM 10,000 cheaper. “Regular” units of the E 200 will feature the 2 wide screen displays.
The touchpad control with handwriting recognition and LINGUATRONIC voice control comes standard as is COMAND Online with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, NFC (Near Field Communication) and steering-mounted Touch Controls.
Additionally, all variants come with AGILITY CONTROL suspension with selective damping system and lowering. A DYNAMIC SELECT switch allows you to choose Comfort, Eco, Sport, Sport+ and Individual drive modes.
The new E-Class also has a slew of safety and driving assistance systems. PRE-SAFE Impulse Side is an extension of the PRE-SAFE occupant protection system and moves passengers towards the center of the car using inflatable air chambers housed in the backrest when the car detects an imminent side impact. PRE-SAFE Sound emits a short interference signal to trigger a natural reflex and prepare car occupants for the shock of an accident.
Another active assistance is Active Brake Assist which warns a driver to brake to avoid a collision and can also autonomously apply the brakes; it also has the ability to detect pedestrians crossing in front of the car. ATTENTION ASSIST helps guard against driver inattentiveness and drowsiness while Crosswind Assist helps by reducing the effects of strong crosswinds on the car.
Parking Pilot can help with parallel and perpendicular parking and un-parking and also includes Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC and Rear Cross Traffic Alert with automatic braking.
As for differences in specifications, the E 200 gets 18″ wheels, KEYLESS start, reversing camera, and LED headlamps. The other variants get 19″ wheels, high resolution Multibeam LED headlamps, KEYLESS-GO, HANDS-FREE Access, 360º camera, panoramic sliding roof and wireless mobile phone charging. The top-of-the-line E 300 gains a head-up display and 13-speaker Burmester surround sound system.
And for ‘traditionalists’, the E 250 Exclusive comes with the upright three-point star on the bonnet and classic Mercedes-Benz grille. All others come with the sportier grille with the Mercedes-Benz star.
