2016 Subaru Forester Launched In Thailand; Expected In Malaysia In April

Motor Image, the exclusive distributor of Subaru vehicles in Southeast Asia, yesterday launched the Subaru Forester at the 37th Bangkok International Motor Show. Three variants are available – 2.0i, 2.0-P and 2.0XT. The latter two variants are locally assembled in the Tan Chong plant in Segambut for the Malaysia and Thailand markets while the turbocharged 2.0XT is CBU Japan.

Glenn Tan Tan Chong InternationalAt the launch, Glenn Tan, executive director of Tan Chong International revealed the Malaysia prices for the CKD models – RM 144,160 (2.0i), RM 153,700 (2.0-P). The fully imported 2.0XT will be RM 210,940; all prices are inclusive of GST but without insurance and road tax. The local launch has been planned for 14 April 2016 and early birds will get a RM 3,000 discount (limited period).

The CKD models run on a 2L naturally aspirated boxer engine, producing 148 hp and 198 Nm, which is connected to a Lineartronic CVT with 6 virtual gears. The new Forester features many enhancements, particularly the X-Mode which is also available in the base 2.0i model. X-Mode optimizes engine control, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (S-AWD) and brakes to handle mildly difficult terrain. Besides S-AWD, the X-Mode features Hill Descent Control and Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC). Hill Descent Control helps control vehicle speed when going down a steep slope or hill.

The Forester’s suspension has also been improved for better comfort and handling with a stiffer front cross member and enhanced coil and damper for better performance on- and off-road. Adding to comfort is better cabin sound proofing and increased window thickness.

Safety-wise, the Forester comes with seven airbags (front, side, curtain and driver’s knee), ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, door side reinforcement beams and ring-shaped reinforcement frame. There is also a PIN-access feature which allows you to unlock without the key fob (more on that in the upcoming test drive review).

All variants will have a brand new grille, taillights and rims. Interior features across the different variants have been enhanced with a refreshed cabin design, alongside a premium head-unit and a LCD Cluster display.

“Together with the launch of the Forester, Subaru is excited to roll-out a brand-new campaign to highlight the traits of the Forester, an unstoppable vehicle that can turn any challenging terrain into an exciting adventure. The campaign name “Is There Anything You Can’t Do?” reminds people that they can achieve anything they have their eyes set on, and the Subaru Forester will accompany them throughout their adventure”, said Glenn Tan.
