Hyundai Veloster Turbo opens for bookings

The Veloster has always been one of our favourite cars from Hyundai. Distinctive looks aside, it actually has a half-decent chassis providing the kind of assuring handling that is, shall we say, not always common among Hyundai vehicles.

Its biggest drawback, however, is the lack of a powertrain that generates the kind of performance that befit its sexy looks and that well-balanced chassis – 130hp and 158Nm may be okay for an entry-level C-segment family hatchback, but a coupe with sporting intentions has to do better; and it soon will.

Order books are now officially open for the new and refreshed Veloster Turbo, which will have the existing naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre Gamma engine phased out in favour of a turbocharged replacement offering enhancements such as high compression combustion, twin scroll turbocharging, and petrol direct injection. Mated with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission driving the front wheels, the 1.6 T-GDI engine pumps out 183hp and 265Nm.

Highlighting its improved performance, the Veloster Turbo will be receiving a number of cosmetic upgrades that differentiate it from the existing model. Up front, a revised fascia is flanked by new projector headlights with LED accents, with onlookers further treated to the sight of 18-inch alloys, LED tail lights, and the limited edition Matte Grey exterior colour.

Selling price of the Veloster Turbo is expected to start from RM150,000 inclusive of GST but before insurance. As with existing models in the Hyundai line-up, the Veloster Turbo will be covered by a 5-year / 300,000km warranty and 24-hour road assist service.
