BHPetrol brings Euro 5 Diesel into Malaysia

by -

Malaysia welcomes the much-awaited arrival of Euro 5 fuel into our shores albeit in limited quantities, with Boustead Petroleum Marketing Sdn Bhd (BHPetrol) offering the uprated fuel grade in selected stations throughout the southern state of Johor, becoming the first petroleum company in the country to do so in the process.

Effective today, the fully-imported BHPetrol Infiniti Euro 5 Diesel will be available at four BHPetrol sites in Johor, with a further seven stations following suit in a fortnight. The four pioneer stations are situated at Tebrau, Pasir Gudang, and the north- and south-bound PLUS Highway R&R stops at Pagoh. Motorists can identify the Euro 5-designated pumps by their blue-coloured hoses and nozzles.

BHPetrol’s introduction of Euro 5 diesel exclusively in Johor comes as a result of Singapore’s government implementation of Euro 5 emissions on vehicles entering its borders. Singapore authorities have indicated, and they generally keep their word on these things, that vehicles entering from Malaysia will be required to comply to Euro 5 emissions or face penalties, or even being denied entry altogether.

Compared to existing Euro 2M diesel, the new Euro 5 fuel is a considerably cleaner grade – sulphur content is reduced from 500 parts per million (ppm) to just 10ppm. For engines, upgrading from Euro 2M to Euro 5 requires nitrogen oxide emissions to be down from 730 to 180 mg/km, and diesel particulate matter from 100 to just 5 mg/km.

Diesel particulate matter is a byproduct of sulphur in the fuel created during combustion and is known to be carcinogenic. Many modern Euro 5 diesel engines sold in Malaysia were forced to have their diesel particulate filters removed in order to function with Euro 2M fuel. This factor alone makes it extremely imperative that the expanded roll-out of Euro 5 diesel across the country to be continued without further delay.

The new BHPetrol Infiniti Euro 5 Diesel will be sold at RM2.30 per litre, incurring a 10 sen/litre premium over existing Euro 2M diesel, which continues to sell alongside. Sale of Euro 5 diesel will be restricted to Malaysia-registered vehicles only.
