Kuala Lumpur, 16th April 2014 – BMW Group Malaysia today unveiled the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé and the all-new BMW 4 Series Convertible in the form of the BMW 220i Coupé and the BMW 428i Convertible at the BMW Malaysian Open 2014.

As the successor to the BMW 1 Series Coupé, the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé is now larger, more powerful and agile vehicle, with a sportier look. The original design inspiration for the 1 Series Coupe was the BMW 2002 of the 1960’s era, and the 2 Series continues the tradition of a compact, rear wheel-drive car with incomparable driving pleasure and inimitable elegance.

“The all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé is a car very much at the heart of our brand as this exciting model is built on the BMW tradition of sub-compact models with unbeatable driving dynamics. The car carries the spirit of the BMW 02 Series which created a whole new driving experience and generation of cars when it was introduced in 1966. With the legendary BMW 2002 which clearly established BMW as “The Ultimate Driving Machine”, we are proud to continue this fine tradition today with the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé,” said Dr. Gerhard Pils, Chief Executive Officer of BMW Group Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the all-new BMW 4 Series Convertible will bring in a new era in the premium segment – built on the 3 Series platform, with a slightly extended wheelbase, it looks just the right size, and has a commanding presence, truly a worthy successor to the 3 Series Convertible

Dr. Pils further added, “The all-new BMW 4 Series Convertible underpins the BMW 3 Series’ successful defence of its segment leadership over the past several decades. The BMW 3 Series Convertible for example, has remained the uncontested leader in its segment through its various incarnations since it was first launched in 1986. Today, the all-new BMW 4 Series Convertible has everything it needs to take the lead once again with its distinctive aesthetics and even greater dynamism, thus taking sheer driving pleasure to all-new heights.”

According to Dr. Pils, these two models are brought in a CBU models to cater for the customers in this category who want something a little different – “ going into the niches”, as he puts it.

Both the all-new BMW 220i Coupé and the all-new BMW 428i Convertible fulfil the 50/50 front-rear weight distribution – BMW’s ideal as the perfect basis for the unique characteristics of a BMW car. Both cars are equipped with the BMW eight speed automatic transmission, and are tuned for top-level agility and steering precision.

BMW Group Malaysia is confident that the two new additions to the BMW family will further strengthen the premium automaker’s number one position in the Malaysian market. Dr. Pils said, “In the first quarter of 2014, we have already delivered a total of 1,972 vehicles, comprising of 1,735 BMW, 132 MINI and 108 BMW Motorrad, marking a 18% increase as compared to the same period in 2013 where we delivered 1,665 vehicles.”

The following is from the official release by BMW Malaysia:-

The all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé: more sportier than ever.
The standout position of the preceding BMW 1 Series Coupé was rooted most prominently in its rear-wheel-drive concept, powerful engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, and a compelling premium character. Now, the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé takes driving pleasure to even greater heights as the new two-door highlights a particularly impressive figure with its distinctive body design, powerful engine and specially configured chassis technology.

The all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé sets itself apart from its predecessor by assuming a character all of its own with an aesthethic appeal and premium allure which is highlighted by the new car’s “2” designation. This differentiation is immediately recognisable in the design of the new Coupé as it denotes the presence of a supremely sporting driving experience. The specific proportions of the all-new BMW 220i Coupé are contained within a body measuring 4,432mm in length (72mm longer) and 1,774 in width (26mm wider). The new compact Coupé also has a 30mm longer wheelbase (2,690mm) and wider tracks with the front now at 1,521mm (41mm wider) and the rear at 1,556mm (43mm wider). The sporty silhouette of the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé is clearly defined by its long bonnet, short overhangs, a swept-back cabin and slender windows which further underline this coupé’s sporty appearance.

The hallmark BMW Coupé proportions in the all-new BMW 220i Coupé is further highlighted by a clear separation between the roofline and luggage compartment. The visually ‘faster’ coupé roofline and the slender C-pillar with its distinctive BMW Hofmeister kink are also amongst the new compact coupé’s most conspicuous characteristics. In accentuating the dynamism of the all-new BMW 220i Coupé, the brand specific L-shaped rear lights are coupled with new wide LED light banks to make the compact coupé stand out even more during the night.

For an exquisite sports-like performance, the all-new BMW 220i Coupé is equipped with a very powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Coupled with the award-winning BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the new compact coupé delivers an astounding output of 135kW/184hp with torque peaking at 270Nm. The all-new BMW 220i Coupé sprints from 0-100km/h in 7.0 seconds with a top speed of 230km/h. These figures are combined with an average fuel consumption reading of 6.0litres per 100km and a CO2 emissions level of 139g/km.

Meanwhile, the sporty driving experience from the all-new BMW 220i Coupé is further accentuated with a new sport automatic transmission which is especially suitable for customers who aspire towards more dynamic styles of driving. Together with paddle shifters on the steering wheel and a Launch Control function, the driver is able to optimise traction while accelerating as the new premium compact Coupé provides maximum dynamic performance from a standstill, especially in motorsport situations.

While delivering such an impressive performance, BMW has ensured that the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé keeps to its commitment of impressive driving-pleasure-to-fuel-consumption ratio through innovative BMW EfficientDynamics features. This includes the Auto Start-Stop function which combined with the automatic transmission, will provide a considerable boost to the all-new BMW 220i Coupé’s efficiency. For an even more exceptional fuel-efficient style of driving, the new compact Coupé offer drivers the ability to modify the overall character of the car for more fuel savings with the ECO PRO mode which can be activated through the Driving Experience Control button featured as standard.

The incomparable driving pleasure and supreme agility of the all-new BMW 220i Coupé is further emphasized with double-joint spring-strut front suspension and five-link rear suspension with model-specific fine-tuning, as well as electromechanical power steering and a powerful brake system – all of which enables the car to possess exemplary handling in bends and excellent stability on straights. For even more increased agility, BMW customers will also have the option of an M sport suspension with their all-new BMW BMW 220i Coupé. Further customization to the equipment line of the all-new BMW 220i Coupé includes 17” light alloy Star-spoke wheels and exterior trims in High Gloss Black as a further emphasis of the car’s sporty exterior.

In addition to its sporty appearance and natural dynamic performance, the all-new BMW 220i Coupé also combines design, sportiness and functionality with high-quality materials and top-class workmanship to further trigger the passion of driving enthusiasts with a fashionable urban lifestyle. Featuring classic ergonomics, the driver-oriented cockpit is consistently designed for sporty driving enjoyment. An Easy-Entry function for the front seats facilitates access to the two rear seats, which now offers more legroom by an increase of 21mm as compared to the outgoing model, while headroom for the driver and front passenger has grown by 19mm. This remarkably spacious cabin which also exudes unique versatility with a 60/40 split rear backrest is combined with an increase in functionality levels with the all-new BMW 220i Coupé featuring large storage compartments along the inside of the doors and two cup holders positioned in front of the shift lever.

The all-new BMW 4 Series Convertible – The most attractive and sporty convertible in its class.
As the successor of the BMW 3 Series Convertible, the all-new BMW 4 Series Convertible now succeeds a family renowned for being the most beautiful forms of open-top motoring with its distinctive aesthetics and greater dynamism. The all-new BMW 428i Convertible is equipped with enhanced performance, precise handling and many new convenient convertible solutions as well as a level of in-car connectivity that is unique in its class. These will come together to make the all-new BMW 428i Convertible by far, the most attractive and emotionally appealing car in the compact executive segment.

Benefiting from an exceptionally sporting and elegant look, the all-new BMW 4 Series Convertible is built to be longer and wider than the outgoing model as it stands at 4,638mm long (26mm longer) and 1,825mm wide (43mm wider). Combined with a visibly larger wheelbase at 2,810mm (50mm increase), the front track (1,545mm) and the rear track (1,594mm) of the convertible, which has increased by 45mm and 81mm respectively, will lend this car even greater road presence and dynamic appeal on top of its striking design language.

The first key feature to the design language of the all-new BMW 428i Convertible is its distinctive hardtop which many BMW customers will come to love. In just 20 seconds, the all-new BMW 428i Convertible transforms from an elegant coupé to a highly attractive, dynamic roadster as the all-electrical roof is stowed away in the boot. Its completely invisible roll-over protection system provides an exceedingly elegant convertible silhoutte, and conveniently retracts behind the rear headrests when not in use. Numerous other enhancements have also been done on the tried and trusted mechanical three-part retractable hardtop, including noticeably improved noise insulation and a roofliner with integrated interior lighting.

The top can also be lowered when the convertible is travelling at speeds of up to 18 km/h. The vehicle’s air resistance with the steel top up is 0.28 cd – and it is just 0.33cd when the hardtop is retracted. The redesigned optional windblock is now wider at the sides and smaller, lighter and easier to use and is more effective than in previous variants. When it is not needed, the windblock can be stored behind the rear seat to save space, which is now also a new feature.

Further accentuating the design cues of the convertible is a homogeneous side window design with frameless windows and a hallmark BMW Hofmeister kink at the bottom of the slender C-pillar. Combined with low overhangs, an elongated bonnet, a cabin offset towards the rear, as well as wide spacing of the L-shaped tailights and flared wheel arches, the characteristic silhouette of the convertible sets the car apart in its segment. The all-new BMW 428i Convertible has also been crafted to become apparent in details such as the aerodynamic fine-tuning of the Air Breathers behind the front wheels which will help reduce drag within the front wheel arches, which in turn reduces fuel consumption even further.

The BMW 428i Convertible also has plenty of space in the boot, even when the retractable hardtop is lowered: Unlike earlier models, the new convertible offers wider access to the luggage compartment and an electro-hydraulic loading assistance system pivots and positions the folded hardtop in the boot as needed to ensure maximum utilisation of the 220 litres storage space available. The loading assistance feature ensures that there is always ample access to the boot whether the top is up or down. But that is not all, two storage compartments on the right and left of the main luggage area are also available for stowing small items when the retractable top is closed. When the top is up, the luggage compartment has a volume of 370 litres – which is 20 litres more than available in the BMW 3 Series Convertible.

Even bulky items can be transported with the BMW 4 Series Convertible. A flat and level storage area can be utilised when the backrest of the rear bench seat is folded down. If the car is equipped with the optional load-through feature, even more space is available: Either a wide opening between the rear passenger compartment and the boot, or a smaller opening, for example for golf sets when four people are seated in the vehicle.

In keeping with its sporty and dynamic design, the all-new BMW 428i Convertible is equipped with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology for outstanding dynamism and exemplary fuel economy. Housing a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, the all-new BMW 428i Convertible delivers a maximum output of 180kW/245hp and 350Nm of torque to allow a 0-100km sprint in just 6.4 seconds at a top speed of 250km/h. The fuel consumption is recorded at 6.6 litre per 100km while CO2 emissions are noted at 154g/km.
Further to the all-new convertible’s enhanced performance, the all-new BMW 428i Convertible is also equipped for sporty and dynamic handling which runs on the car’s extremely wide track coupled with a standard electromechanical steering with Servotronic, to provide speed-dependent power steering support. Meanwhile, for drivers with exceptional sporting ambitions, the all-new BMW 428i Convertible also features the Adaptive M Suspension with electronically controlled damper. This enables the car’s operating characteristics to be adapted to the driving situation at hand, enabling drivers to choose between sportslike performance or more luxury oriented set-ups.

The all-new BMW 428i Convertible will also feature unique intelligent connectivity to futher complement the sporty yet efficient roadster. With the standard Driving Experience Control which offers three different vehicle set-ups for very economical driving, comfortable cruising and very sporty driving, the all-new BMW 428i Convertible now comes with three new BMW EfficientDynamics features – The Sailing function, Route-Ahead Assistant and ECO PRO Route. In combination with the eight speed automatic transmission, Sailing function allows the car to coast or ‘sail’ with the foot off the accelerator at speeds between 50 and 160 km/h in order to save fuel.

Meanwhile, the Route-Ahead Assistant which is fed data from the cars on-board Navigation System Professional will recognize bends, city, town and village boundaries, speed restrictions and motorway exits to provide drivers with tips on reducing accelerator pressure in advance. For even more fuel efficiency, drivers can use the ECO PRO Route which operates with the Navigation System Professional to calculate the most economical means of reaching one’s destination. Both recorded fuel savings as well as the estimated travel times will be displayed and depending on the driver’s individual driving style, up to an additional five per cent of fuel can be saved.

Inside the car, the sportiness and elegance of the all-new BMW 428i Convertible is further emphasized by high-quality, ergonomically perfect seating and operating comfort. To feature the typical BMW driver orientation concept, the circular black-panel dials, a free-standing iDrive flatscreen display, and the conveniently accessible iDrive Touch Controller are all located in the centre console of the convertible to allow the relevant controls and switches to be operated intuitively and efficiently. The premium ambience of the car is further highlighted with a sport steering wheel and a one-piece rear seat bench which can be folded down for a continuous surface of extra space in addition to the luggage compartment. Creating a very pleasant, premium ambience whether the top is up or down, the all-new BMW 428i Convertible also presents maximum practicality with a central cup holder and storage compartments.

Made available as standard with the Luxury line, the all-new 428i Convertible will feature 18” light alloy Multi-spoke wheels as well as the luxury line exterior trims in Chrome and an interior trim of Fineline Anthracite with Chrome highlights. Further to that is a HiFi loudspeaker system which is powered with 9 loudspeakers.

“Our BMW engineers have succeeded in making key improvements in areas such as steering accuracy, weight distribution, a programme of fine-tuning in the wind tunnel and a lightweight construction concept for the all-new BMW 4 Series Convertible. This all comes together to deliver an unadulterated driving machine which will allow us to remain the world’s most successful leading premium automotive brand,” said Dr. Pils.
