Geneva 2014: Hyundai Intrado concept

Hyundai’s future styling direction is being previewed at the Geneva Motor Show in the Intrado concept, making its first global appearance there, lining-up alongside the all-new Genesis that is making its European debut following its world premiere at Detroit earlier this year.

Taking its name from the underside of an aircraft wing responsible for creating lift, the Intrado showcases the next progression of Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design language under the guidance of Peter Schreyer, who moved over from sister company Kia to assume the role of President and Chief Design Officer of the Hyundai Motor Group.

Commenting on the first Hyundai concept developed under his watch, the former Audi man said, “Effortless and sensual, Intrado reflects the open-mindedness and constant renewal of the Hyundai brand. It also shows that Hyundai wants its customers to rediscover the joy and freedom that should be associated with personal mobility. That’s why this car has such purity of purpose – it’s logical, lovable and liveable.”

More than just a styling exercise, the Intrado also demonstrates Hyundai’s advancement in the development of lightweight materials, radical construction methods and advanced powertrains for improved energy efficiency.

Cleanly styled to be aerodynamically efficient, the Intrado’s body panels are made of advanced super-lightweight steel, whilst its frame is constructed of carbon fibre using new manufacturing and joining techniques. Hyundai claims that the central frame is so strong that it gives designers greater flexibility in material selection for the body panels.

Powering the Intrado is a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain mated to a 36kW lithium-ion battery. Like driving a fossil fuel-powered vehicle, the Intrado can be refueled in just minutes and has a cruising range of 600km. Difference between this and today’s regular passenger car is that the Intrado emits only water.
