Audi S3 Cabriolet set for Geneva debut

Audi will introduce yet another new addition to its line-up of S-Models at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, namely the S3 Cabriolet – a derivative of the new MQB-based A3 Cabriolet powered by a highly-charged 2.0 TFSI engine mated with quattro all-wheel drive technology.

An open top with seats for four, the S3 Cabriolet features an electrohydraulically operated soft top (available with three colour options) with magnesium, aluminium, and high-strength steel support members to keep weight low. Foam insulation helps keep cabin noise levels low. The top’s mechanism opens and closes in 18 seconds, even on the move up to 50kph. An active rollover system protects passengers in the event of an accident.

Displacing the familiar 1,984cc volume of VW Group 2.0-litre engines, the S3’s turbocharged dual-injected EA888 pushes out 296hp @ 5,500 – 6,200rpm and 380Nm @ 1,800 – 5,500rpm, identical outputs with the latest Golf R which also shares the same engine and all-wheel drive layout. Standard transmission is the 6-speed wet clutch DSG, typically dubbed S-tronic in Audi applications.

Matching the transversely-mounted powerplant is an electronic oil-immersed multi-plate clutch mounted just ahead of the rear axle to facilitate all-wheel drive traction. In regular driving, the system operates with a heavy front bias, with engine torque re-routed to the rear upon detection of slip.

A key feature of the VW Group’s MQB platform is its rear-inclined engine installation that pushes the front axle forward. In the S3 Cabriolet, this enabled Audi to achieve a reasonably balanced 56:44 front/rear weight distribution. In accordance to its high outputs, the S3 Cabriolet is independently-sprung all-round; lower-powered models of the MQB platform are fitted with torsion beam rear suspension.

This mechanical setup gives the S3 Cabriolet the ability to sprint from rest to 100kph in 5.4 seconds and a limited top speed of 250kph. Official fuel consumption is rated at 7.1 l/100km on the European combined cycle and carbon dioxide emissions at 165 g/km.

Delivery of the S3 Cabriolet in Germany will commence in summer – for a base price of €48,500.
