Nasim Sdn Bhd, official distributor of Peugeot in Malaysia, has launched the all-new Peugeot 208 GTi at a price of RM139,888 on-the-road with insurance. Equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission and the award-winning 1.6-litre Prince engine co-developed with BMW, the 208 GTi is being touted as a spiritual successor of the legendary 205 GTi that captured the hearts and imagination of many driving enthusiasts of its era.

From the regular 208 1.6 VTi, the range-topping 208 GTi is differentiated by unique styling touches such as the double chrome exhaust tailpipes, chequered flag front grille design, and a unique GTi rear spoiler; GTi identifications badges adorn the tailgate and C-pillar. Two-tone Carbon alloy rims measuring 17 inches in diameter occupy the four corners, and they are mounted on tracks widened by 10mm up front and 20mm behind over the the regular 208. The 208 GTi is offered exclusively with a three-door bodystyle.

Inside, the cabin is finished in a sporty red and black colour scheme, and is typically generous with equipment. A floating 7″ HD colour touchscreen sitting above the central air-con vents dominates the centre stack, serving as access for the optional sat nav system, trip computer, radio, and even climate control, for which a dedicated set of buttons are also provided lower down. Sound is project by a six-speaker Arkamys 3D system with USB and Bluetooth streaming capabilities.

Other notable features of the car include front and rear LED lighting plus cornering lights, panoramic glass roof, parking sensors with audio-visual assistance, and active parking assist. Rate five stars by Euro NCAP, the 208 GTi boasts six airbags and is equipped with traction control and an electronic safety programme (ESP) that incorporates anti-skid regulator (ASR) and dynamic stability control (DSC). The usual ABS and EBD systems are similarly present.

Since its introduction in 2004, the award-winning Prince engine has served to power a wide range of cars from both the BMW and PSA Groups in various states of tune, both turbocharged and naturally aspirated. Found in the 208 GTi is the engine in one of its more potent forms, pushing out 200hp and 275Nm with the aid of a twin-scroll turbocharger, direct injection, and variable valve timing and lift.

Tipping the scales at 1,160kg, the 208 GTi accelerates from rest to 100kph in 6.8 seconds and has a maximum speed of 230kph. Fuel consumption in the European combined cycle is rated at 5.9 l/100km and carbon dioxide emissions at 139 g/km.

Available in two colours – Digital White and Rogue Red – the 208 GTi is priced at RM139,888 on-the-road with insurance. We have been informed that initial units are fully imported with CKD set to be eventually introduced. There is no mention if local assembly will see any change in price or specifications.

As with all existing Peugeot models in Nasim’s line-up, the 208 GTi comes with a five-year warranty with unlimited mileage together with Nasim’s existing lifetime 24-hours Peugeot Assistance service, complimentary access to the Peugeot Lounge and Peugeot Privilege membership.
