Hot on the heels of the highly successful Lamborghini Aventador coupe comes its roadster counterpart, the Aventador LP700-4 Roadster, which was officially launched in Malaysia yesterday. Since its introduction in Summer 2011, the Aventador coupe has sold over 1,300 units worldwide, chances are that the Roadster will enjoy similar success as well.

As much as its stratospheric performance – 700hp of V12 muscle propelling it to a 3.5-second century sprint and 350kph top speed – the Aventador Roadster is also notable for its killer jetfighter-inspired looks defined by sharp geometric lines.

Highlighting the design lines is a two-tone paint finish, which sees the windshield pillar, roof sections, and rear window area painted in gloss-black, contrasting the rest of the vehicle which can be specified in a choice of colours that include the newly-added light metallic blue colour Azzuro Thetis that evokes memories of the 1968 Miura Roadster.

Yet, every element of the Aventador’s appearance has a purpose. Its rear pillar has been redesigned to offer total support for the removable roof, accommodate an automatic protection system for passengers, and provide the engine compartment with ample ventilation.

A noticeable styling difference of the Roadster from its coupe counterpart, besides its obvious unique upper profile that supports its removable roof, is a ‘central spine’ of its rear hood flanked by two pairs of hexagonal windows designed to simultaneously drain water, cool the engine, and show it off to the admiring public.

Indeed, the engine is quite a piece of equipment to show off. Displacing 6.5 litres and being naturally aspirated, the V12 unit routs its whopping 700hp output to the rear wheels via an 7-speed ISR automated manual transmission to give the Aventador Roadster a 3.5-second century sprint and 350kph top speed.

In today’s climate, not even a supercar status spares one from environmental obligations – the V12 is equipped with cylinder deactivation and auto start-stop to help lower overall fuel consumption. Operation of the auto start-stop is facilitated by a set of high-performance capacitors known as supercaps to restart the engine.

Speaking of the engine, the Aventador Roadster has a powered rear windshield that not only controls the flow of air in the vehicle, but also the level of sound from the V12 that is allowed into the cabin. A removable wind deflector, attached to the front windshield frame, allows for complete calm inside the cabin even when cruising at high speed.
