Volkswagen Scirocco R officially on sale in Malaysia
Volkswagen Group Malaysia has today announced that the Scirocco R, top dog of the Scirocco range and the third car to feature Volkswagen’s R badge, is officially available for sale. Its introduction follows recent launches of the Golf R and Passat CC R-Line as halo products in the Volkswagen line-up.
Volkswagen Group Malaysia Managing Director Mr Ricky Tay said the Scirocco offers a different experience to customers in Malaysia. He noted that, “We recently introduced the Golf R and Passat CC R-Line in the Malaysian market. Both represent different markets and target groups. The Scirocco, on the other hand, is another performance offering by Volkswagen R.”
A 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine powers the Scirocco R, but its outputs are slightly scaled down from the Golf R’s – 268hp is reduced to 252hp, produced at 6,000rpm, but torque is identical, with 350Nm available from 2,500 to 5,000rpm. There is, of course, a very good reason why the Scirocco R makes do with less power, and it is because it drives only the front wheels, as opposed to the Golf R, which drives all four.
Still, scaled down does not mean slow. Armed with Volkswagen 6-speed wet double clutch gearbox, the Scirocco R can sprint from rest to 100kph in six seconds flat on its way to a restricted 250kph top speed. Indeed, it has more than enough juice flowing through the front wheels for Volkswagen to arm the Scirocco R as with the XDS electronic front differential lock as standard.
The Scirocco R comes standard with Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC), and is shod on R-specific 19-inch alloy wheels (“Talladega” type) with size 235/ 35 tyres. Similar to the Golf R, the brakes were modified from the standard model’s to handle the higher level of driving performance.
Standard equipment include dual-zone automatic climate control (“Climatronic”) and the “RNS 510” satellite navigation system with CD player, MP3 playback function, dual tuners, USB & AUX-IN port. Additionally, the car has a panoramic tilting glass roof, motorsport bucket seats, DYNAUDIO ‘Excite’ 300W, 8-speaker premium sound system, ‘Keyless Access’ keyless locking and starting system.
The Scirocco R is offered in six different colours; Candy White, Viper Green, Rising Blue, Reflex Silver, Iridium Grey and Deep Black. Inside, the car’s seats are wrapped in sporty Vienna leather. Available at Volkswagen dealerships nationwide, the Scirocco R is priced at RM279,888. Registration and paper work brings the on-road price before insurance to RM281,060.
