Volkswagen Group Malaysia Launches R Models
Kuala Lumpur, 5 March 2012. – The product brand “R“ stands for premium models of the Volkswagen brand with a modern sporting appeal that is aimed at delighting customers with their exceptional driving dynamics and powerful design, both technical and elegant.
It stands for the connection of road vehicles with racing technology and ultimate driving pleasure and is the pride of the Volkswagen product range.
Volkswagen R GmbH, the specialised company that fulfils the permanently increasing demand for sophisticated automobiles, satisfies the hunger for motorists for both a sporty exterior and exclusive interior equipment requirements.
In combining the two requirements, Volkswagen R prepares ‘The Peoples’ Car’ who’s driving and chassis characteristics offer professional sportiness, exclusivity and individuality for the Volkswagen brand.
Despite the high-end dynamic performance and characteristics of its cars, the R cars are able to attain extremely low fuel consumption and emission values thanks to intelligent downsizing of TSI and DSG.
Volkswagen R GmbH also serves as an important conduit to Volkswagen Motorsport, as illustrated by its involvement in the Scirocco R-Cup where Volkswagen R GmbH is the main sponsor of this series, the most eco-friendly one-make cup series in the world.
Additionally, Volkswagen R will also enter a Polo R in the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2013 where its technical competence will once again be put to the test.
Bringing this unique experience to Malaysians, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia has introduced the Golf R.
Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia Managing Director Mr Ricky Tay said the R brand is an extension to the Volkswagen product portfolio in Malaysia, offering sporty solutions to their everyday motoring needs.
“The R-models enable our customers to enjoy ultimate performance at affordable prices. In spite of them being affordable, these cars have been engineered with pure racing technology and DNA to make sure their performance levels are unmistakable.
“However, the superior performance has resulted in these cars boasting some of the best fuel consumption figures in them. And so, these R-models offer our customers the best in class fuel consumption, best performance and of course, the best value for a premium product from Volkswagen,” he added.
Golf R
The Golf R is the top version of the most successful automobile in the world. As the flagship of the model series and the brand and one of the most important models of Volkswagen R GmbH it has standard all-wheel drive (4MOTION), bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights.
It comes equipped with Volkswagen’s trademark 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).
At 255PS, this Golf is the most powerful version of the model series ever built. Simultaneously, it is the most fuel efficient Golf R ever – its fuel economy is 13.4 per cent better than on the previous model.
The data in detail: The Golf R sprints from 0 to 100kph in just 5.7 seconds while fuel consumption is just 8.4 litres/100km.
Accordingly, CO2 emissions are now at 196g/km.
The enormous efficiency gain of the Golf R is the result of intelligent engine downsizing.
Its legendary predecessor generated its power from a displacement of 3.2 litres and six cylinders. In the new model, this is done with four cylinders and 2.0 litres displacement, but in a highly advanced petrol direct-injection engine with turbocharging (TSI) – a high-tech alliance.
The turbo four-cylinder direct-injection engine of the Golf R transfers 330Nm of torque to the crankshaft, also from 2,400rpm, but it can maintain this peak value up to 5,200rpm.
So the new car delivers a fascinatingly high level of basic dynamic performance. The Golf R32 and Golf R are really only equal in one discipline: they both have a top speed of 250kph.
As standard equipment, the Golf R transfers the TSI’s power to the road via the latest generation of Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.
When it came to the running gear, development engineers were able to adopt the first-class system in the current production Golf. However, the basic layout was transformed into a sport chassis with lowered ride-height, springs, dampers and stabilisers were completely retuned to match.
The Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) has also tuned to the Golf R.
The brake system was modified for the Golf R’s higher level of driving performance. In addition to a more aggressively tuned braking set-up, the Golf R comes with internally ventilated discs all around and R-specific brake callipers painted a high-gloss black with R logo.
The electronic stabilisation program (ESP) was tweaked to delay intervention during very fast and curve-filled drives to enable more responsive handling properties.
The electro-mechanical power-assisted steering of the Golf R was given a sportier characteristic. The chassis maintains contact with the road with its standard 19-inch alloy wheels (“Talladega” type) specially designed for the Golf R with 235/35 R19 tyres.
The Golf R also distinguishes itself by a completely modified set of exterior and interior features. Outside, its customisation includes “Talladega” wheels, black brake callipers with R-logo as well as new bumper designs.
In front, the Golf R has three very large air intakes in the bumper area; an LED strip was integrated as a daytime running light in each of the two outer air intakes as a standard feature.
Appearing on the right side of the grille is the R logo in chrome. Bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights, included without surcharge, illuminate the way through the night. On its sides, the Golf R is identified by its side sill extensions in body colour and mirror housings painted in high gloss black.
The Golf R can be made out as an independent top model at the rear. Along with the bumper with its diffuser and central tailpipes, as well as R logo and larger roof edge spoiler, the smoked taillights stand out. They operate with LED technology – as a standard feature that is visually distinctive, quick responding and exhibits long life.
A key equipment feature inside the Golf R is the “Motorsport Bucket Seats.” The driver just sits down, makes longitudinal and height adjustments to the seat, adjusts the steering wheel, buckles up, and is ready to go. The seat fits as if custom fitted.
The sport seats are upholstered in “Vienna” leather together with R-logos. The inner surfaces of the lateral seat supports consist of crystal-micro-fibres. Also standard on board is an automatic climate control system (“Climatronic”) and the “RNS 510” satellite navigation system including DYNAUDIO ‘Excite’ 300W, 8-speaker premium sound system
Additionally, the Golf R comes with the electric tilt/slide glass sunroof for added convenience.
The Golf R is available in 6 colour choices that include Candy White, Tornado Red, Rising Blue, Reflex Silver, United Grey, and Deep Black.
Priced at RM268,888, the car is now available for bookings at all Volkswagen authorised dealerships nationwide.
