Toyota Eco Rangers programme concludes three-year run
The Toyota Eco Rangers (TER) programme, a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative by UMW Toyota Motor in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam (YAWA), has arrived at the conclusion of its course after a three-year period that saw the 22 participating schools planting a combined total of over 9,000 trees.
Not to be confused with UMWT’s other CSR initiative, Toyota Eco Youth, the TER programme is designed to encourage environmental conservation activities among secondary school students, with tree planting just one of many items on the agenda. The overarching theme is for schools to create a greener environment around them.
Marking the climax and conclusion of this programme was an award presentation ceremony held at SMK Putrajaya Presint 8 (1), where the participating schools had the opportunity to showcase the fruits of their handiwork over the past three years. Through this programme, students were introduced to various indigenous trees and ways of creating bio-enzyme and composting to nurture the plants.
En Ismet Suki, President of UMW Toyota Motor commented, “Through the Toyota Eco Rangers programme, we have planted a total of 9,341 trees. This is inclusive of 6,815 forest trees and 2,526 other types of trees which are planted within their school compound or the surrounding community areas.”
That total of 9,341 trees includes some 30 species of forest or indigenous trees, namely garcinia atrovindis (Asam gelugor), shorea curtusii (Meranti), and mesua ferea (Penaga Lilin). Other trees included herbal, decorative and various potted plants.
Over the three years, UMWT personnel have been keeping tabs on the progress of each school, and at the award ceremony, the top schools received their due awards and recognition for three years worth of hard work.
