The Mazda3 was introduced in 2004 as the successor model to the illustrious 323 Familia lineage. Based on underpinnings of the Ford Focus, the Mazda3 (known in Japan as the Mazda Axela) has become a key model in Mazda’s line-up having reached the 3 million unit milestone recently on 26 April 2011.

The current Mazda3 is a thoroughly reworked version that was introduced in 2009, and is currently produced in Mazda’s Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi, Japan, the Changan Ford Mazda Automobile (CFMA) plant in Nanjing, China, and AutoAlliance (Thailand) (AAT). Local distributors, Bermaz Motor also recently began assembling CKD units of the Mazda3 for the Malaysian market in Inokom’s plant in Kulim. It was at the Hofu plant that the 3 millionth Mazda3 rolled out.

In Malaysia, the Mazda3 is offered in both sedan and hatchback bodystyle with the option of 1.6 and 2.0-litre MZR petrol engines. Also available for sale is the high performance MPS version, which is powered by a 2.3-litre turbocharged direct injection engine also of the MZR family.
