Volvo rolls out CKD units of XC60 T5
Having commenced CKD operations for the XC60 last year, Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) has introduced a new variant of this popular premium SUV with the more powerful XC60 T5 to replace the 2.0T. At RM289,950 before insurance, the T5 is a mere RM8,000 north of the 2.0T which we had just reviewed not too long ago.
For that small premium, Volvo adds Pedestrian Detection, Collision Warning with its new Full Auto Brake feature, Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist and a new infotainment system with a 7” colour screen to the T5. Previously, the 2.0T came with Collision Warning with Auto Brake (but NOT Full Auto Brake), and its Adaptive Cruise Control did not feature Queue Assist. The infotainment system was a RM11k option with the 2.0T.
Your RM8k premium also buys you a few extra horses in the engine room. The same 1,999cc turbocharged direct injection engine has seen its power bumped up from 203hp in the 2.0T to 240hp in the T5 delivered at 5,500rpm. Torque is similarly increased, from 300Nm to 320Nm spread over an even wider window from 1,800 to 5,000rpm. Like the 2.0T, the T5 continues to be front-wheel driven and power is transmitted from the engine by Getrag’s 6-speed Powershift dual clutch gearbox.
The additional safety features incorporated into the XC60 were recently introduced in the S60. The Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake detects the presence of pedestrians and warns the driver if it determines any one of them coming to the path of the vehicle. In the event that the driver does not respond, the vehicle automatically applies full braking power at speeds up to 35kph.
The new Queue Assist function incorporated into the Adaptive Cruise Control system automatically maintains a set gap with the vehicle in front and operates at speeds up to 200kph. In traffic queues, the car automatically speeds up and slows down based on traffic movement.
The Collision Warning system has also been uprated to incorporate Full Auto Brake. As before, the system will warn the driver with visual and audio signals when the XC60 approaches another vehicle from the rear. In the event that the driver does not stop, at speeds between 4 and 180kph, the system applies braking force to bring the car to a stop.
In-Car Entertainment of the XC60 has also been enhanced with the introduction of the Volvo Sensus human machine interface system, which ties in with the upgraded 7″ LCD screen and can be operated by the steering-mounted controls. Unlike the CD player found on the 2.0T, the T5 is now fitted with a DVD player with a MP3 decoder while the Bluetooth hands-free system now comes with a new audio streaming feature.
UPDATE (12/5/2010): VCM today sent us the following price list of optional accessories offered with the XC60 T5. The promotional prices are valid until 31 July only.
