Proton co-organizes 20th Malaysia Skills Competition in Alor Setar

Over 150 youths from various local institutes of higher learning as well as government and private organizations recently participated in the pre-qualifying rounds of the 20th Malaysia Skills Competition – Automobile Technology Sector co-organized by the Ministry of Human Resource and Proton Holdings Bhd.

Held at Alor Setar over a period of four days from 14 to 17 April, the Malaysia Skills Competition is open to Malaysian youths aged 22 and below. In addition, participants also competed in a trio of sideshows, which included the Proton Skills Competition, Skills Competition – Open Category, and MySkills Competition.

The Proton Skills Competition was open to all technicians and mechanics of Proton Edar Service Centres, and overseas Proton distributors and service centres only. Meanwhile, participation to the Open Category was for trainers of vocational and technical institutes plus technicians and mechanics from workshops nationwide without age restrictions. The MySkills Competition is restricted to professional trainers only.

The Malaysia Skills Competition is a government initiative to sharpen and promote young talents in various vocational and technical fields. It focuses on 21 skill sets that spans across seven industries, namely Automobile, Construction, Manufacturing, ICT, Hospitality, Cosmetology, and Handcrafting.

Proton’s involvement in the competition began in 2003 following the introduction of the Automobile Technology category. In this year’s competition, Proton put together an exhibition of its collection of innovation cars, put together by Proton staff as part of an internal innovation competition. A recruitment drive was also held to hire new staff for the company.
