Volkswagen Group Malaysia (VGM) saw a record sales performance for its Volkswagen passenger cars which totalled 2,810 units in 2010 (2009: 885 units), the highest sales record since the company started retail operations in 2007. The 217% increase from the previous year is attributed to the timely introduction of three of its new exciting Volkswagen models, strong sales of the Passat CC, further dealer network expansion and of course supported by a solid economy and an improved consumer sentiment.

The company sold nearly 5,400 Volkswagen within the four years of operations in Malaysia.

In a statement, Mr Andreas Prinz, Managing Director of VGM said: “The year 2010 proved to be a milestone for us in many aspects. We are not only offering excellent products, but also leading technologies in all car segments, like our award winning, powerful, yet fuel efficient TSI engines and DSG gearboxes. The introduction of our 5 year warranty at the beginning of 2010 also gives customers ease of mind ownership experience”.

A further milestone is the collaboration between Volkswagen and DRB-HICOM. Developing the market potential for Malaysia and the ASEAN region is of major significance and part of the Volkswagen Group’s long-term growth strategy. In line with its expansion of activities in Southeast Asia under its Strategy 2018 growth program, Volkswagen AG and DRB-HICOM signed a collaboration agreement for local vehicle assembly in December 2010.

Mr Prinz said: “This signing is a landmark for VGM and is also significant for the long-term development of the Malaysian automobile industry”.

In the fourth quarter of 2010 (4Q10), VGM successfully launched the Polo 1.2l, Golf 1.4l and Scirocco 1.4l – all with the award winning TSI and Direct Shift Gearbox DSG to its Malaysian customers in a big street launch, the first by a car brand.

Another momentous event was when VGM swept five top awards at the 2010 NST-Maybank Car of the Year Award ceremony. The Volkswagen Passat CC was the big winner picking up three awards, namely the coveted “Overall Car of the Year 2010” as well as the “Premium Executive Car 2010 (below RM300, 000)” and the “Good Design 2010” awards; while the Golf GTI Mk6, won the “Performance Car 2010 (below RM300, 000)” award. The Volkswagen brand was voted the “Most Improved Brand” in Malaysia for Volkswagen’s outstanding visibility and improvements this year in terms of beautiful models, competitive pricing and great advertising.

VGM’s dealer network has further grown in strength and the company expanded its Sales and After Sales dealer network with the opening of Volkswagen PJ, Volkswagen TTDI, Volkswagen Jalan Ipoh, Volkswagen Bangsar and Volkswagen Glenmarie. Agreements for new Volkswagen authorised dealerships have also been signed for Kota Kinabalu in Sabah and Kuantan. All authorized Volkswagen dealerships will be fully compliant with Volkswagen’s new corporate identity standards.

Mr Prinz said: “The appointment of our new business partners is to ultimately ensure that our customers will always be assured of the highest level of service expected of Volkswagen and we will continue to strongly expand our network nationwide”.
