Joy for kids in KLIMS ’10
Feedback from our forum members who have visited the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2010 (KLIMS ’10) would suggest that it is indeed not the best motor show around. That view is difficult to dispute when you consider that the list of absentees is substantially longer than the list of participants.
Other than Proton and Perodua, no one else really showed us anything we have not seen before. Concept cars like the Toyota FT-HS, Hyundai ix-Metro, and Mitsubishi Concept PX-MiEV might have been setting foot on our soil for the first time, but they all made their debuts in other motor shows some time back.
Those who follow coverage of more glittering motor shows such as Shanghai, Geneva, Paris, or even Sydney might not even bat an eyelid at our efforts here. However, that viewpoint would be quite different for those who grow up in an environment that constantly rely on the generous support of donations just to make ends meet.
For underprivileged children who grew up in orphanages and charity homes, a motor show that displays cars like the Proton Persona, Nissan Teana, Honda Insight and Hyundai Avante can be quite spectacular enough. To that end, both UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) and also the organizers of KLIMS ’10 themselves held special tours for a number of underprivileged children to visit our local motor show.
On 6 December, UMWT brought 40 orphans aged between 8 and 15 years old from Asrama Rumah Anak Yatim Damai, Kuang and Rumah Hope, Petaling Jaya around the Motor Show. The entourage, part of UMWT’s CSR activities, was accompanied by a total of 26 UMWT staff volunteers.
Two days later, the show itself organized a Charity Day, where 230 children from 12 charity homes were invited to visit the show. In addition to a free visit, each of the 12 homes were given a RM5,000 cheque.
“In line with KLIMS’10 theme WE CARE, our charity day is an opportunity for us in MAA to give a little something back to those who may not have the chance to experience a show such as ours, where many take for granted. This is also a CSR objective of MAA, which we have committed to raise RM60,000 for,” commented Datuk Aishah Ahmad, President of MAA & Chairman of KLIMS’10 organising committee.
