No recall for Nissan Frontier in Malaysia
Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. recently announced a recall for over 600,000 vehicles in North and South America as well as Africa. Affected models include the Nissan Frontier and Xterra to fix a potentially faulty steering column lower joint. In addition, the Sentra is also recalled due to potentially faulty battery connectors.
A statement in Nissan’s global news site lists the following vehicles as being affected by the recall:
* Nissan Frontier manufactured from 9 July 2001 to 20 October 2004 in Smyrna, Tennessee and from 30 November 2001 to 26 June 2008 in Curitiba, Brazil.
* Nissan Xterra manufactured from 9 July 2001 to 6 January 2005 in Smyrna, Tennessee and from 17 February 2003 to 13 June 2008 in Curitiba, Brazil.
* Nissan Sentra manufactured from 15 May 2010 to 8 July 2010 in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
In the Frontier and Xterra, lower steering column joint can potentially experience corrosion that limits the movement of the joint. If left unchecked, the corrosion would lead to eventual cracking of the steering shaft. The problem with the Sentra is less serious, with the faulty connector potentially causing problems in engine starting and even stalling at low speeds.
Malaysian distributor of Nissan vehicles, Edaran Tan Chong Motor Sdn Bhd has issued a press statement clarifying that Nissan cars sold in Malaysia are not affected by the recall. The Nissan Xterra is not sold in Malaysia, while the affected Nissan Sentra model is different from the N16 Sentra currently sold by Tan Chong.
The Frontier is unaffected as well, because it has a different shaft structure for the lower joints compared to the Frontier model sold in the Americas.
