Toyota Eco Youth 2010 concluded
One of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd’s (UMWT) key corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes, the Toyota Eco Youth (TEY), concluded its most recent edition yesterday. Eight schools, all past champions of the programme, were reunited for this year’s challenge to commemorate the programme’s 10th anniversary.
Organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, participating schools in this year’s programme were: SMK Labuan, Labuan; SMK Sanzac, Sabah; SMK Dato Panglima Abdullah, Sabah; SMK Abi, Perlis; SMK Iskandar Shah, Malacca; SMK Seri Muda, Penang; SMK Seri Kenangan, Johor; and SMK Dato Onn, Penang.
A two-day convention and exhibition was held at Grand Dorsett Hotel, Subang, where the projects of each school were presented and showcased. The convention was concluded with a simple gala dinner, in which the winners of this year’s challenge were announced.
Speaking at the dinner, UMWT’s President Mr Kuah Kock Heng said, “We believe that one of the ways to achieve the sense of love and care for the environment is to educate the youth on issues that affect us all. In recent years, the environment has shown signs of adverse change. Therefore, the Toyota Eco Youth programme cannot come at a better time, as the youngsters who benefit from this programme are part of the generation that will take over from us.”
Taking the crown for this year’s edition is SMK Seri Muda of Penang, their efforts adding RM7,000 to the school’s kitty. On top of that, the school also won an extra RM1,000 for making the Best Presentation during the convention. Second and third places went to SMK Iskandar Shah of Malacca and SMK Sanzac of Sabah respectively. SMK Iskandar Shah also picked up the prize of Best Website, while SMK Dato’ Onn of Penang was awarded for giving the Best Exhibition.
In the ten years that UMWT has been running the programme, TEY has attracted the participation of 145 schools, adding up to 1,160 students and 290 teachers from around the nation.
