Asian Festival of Speed 2010 to open at Sepang this weekend
The 2010 season of the Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS) will kick of at the Sepang International Circuit this weekend (15-16 May 2010). Spectators will get to see drivers from five different race series in action in one weekend.
In this season’s edition, the familiar GT3 Asia, Formula BMW Pacific, and Asian Touring Car Series races continues to see the light of day. They will be joined by the GT4 Asia Cup and the Classic Car Club of Hong Kong Race Series for the first time.
Fans of the GT3 Asia race series will be treated to a starting grid comprising of cars such as the Lamborghini LP560, Porsche 997 Cup S, Ferrari F430 GT3, Ginetta G50 GT3, and Lamborghini Gallardo GT3. Defending champion of the series, Tunku Hammam, will be taking to the track this season with the LP560 replacing his championship-winning Porsche of 2009.
Newly added to the AFOS line-up is the GT4 Asia Cup, which will be held in a 40-minute race format incorporating a mandatory pit-stop in between. GT4 allows for driver swaps, and a number of teams have confirmed two driver participation for the season. Cars to expect in this series include the Aston Martin Vantage N24, Ginetta G50 GT4, and also the Nismo-prepared Nissan 370Z.
Formula BMW Pacific, which opened its season at Sepang during the Malaysian F1 GP weekend, resumes action at AFOS with no less than seven Malaysians set to line up at the starting grid. Singaporean Richard Bradley of Eurasia Motorsport currently leads the standings with Columbian Oscar Tunjo of Meritus and Axcil Jefferies of Motaworld Racing at second and third respectively.
The Asian Touring Car Series will also be contributing two race rounds in the weekend’s fixtures, with reigning champion Cheung Chi Sing and team mate Man Ting Yu set to battle it out again for the championship.
Finally, the Classic Car Club of Hong Kong race series is also set to bring an expected 25 cars to the track, which would include the likes of the TVR 5000M, Porsche 928 GT, the classic Mini, Datsun 1600, BMW 528i (we are guessing E28), and the Alfa GTV.
For spectators, entrance to the Asian Festival of Speed is free, and Pit-Walkabout access is at RM10 per person.
