Andy Kow On Target to win GRA Champion Crown for 2008
Shah Alam, 15 December 2008 – With a three point lead over reigning champion Ivan Khong, Andy Kow is on target to win the 2008 Grass Racing Autosports Autocross Championship in the final round scheduled for this weekend (21 December 2008) at the Shah Alam Stadium autocross track. The overall winner of each round scores nine points, while the second placed winner will score seven points. With a three point lead, Andy can win the championship title simply by trailing Ivan home in second place.
Bad news for Ivan Khong is good news for Andy – Ivan will not be able to get his Subaru Impreza ready in time for this weekend’s race, leaving the field wide open. In the last round, held a month ago, Andy graciously and sportingly let Ivan drive his (Andy’s) Subaru, allowing Ivan to close the gap from a five point deficit to three. Due to work commitments, Ivan has not been able to get his car ready, and has more or less resigned himself to second place in the championship, and a possible third, if Jason Foo in his Satria 1.8 can clinch second or third place overall. Jason Foo has a total of 23 points to Ivan’s 27, and Andy’s 30 points.
A total of 80 to 100 competitors are expected in this weekend’s GRA event, which will be run at the Shah Alam Stadium car park from 0900 hours until 1700 hours on this coming Sunday. The beginner category (Grass Class) will be run in the morning while the Pro-Grass Class (experienced driver class) shall start at 1300 hours.
In the OA Class for cars below 1300 cc, Kenneth Chiew is in a comfortable position, with an unassailable lead of 11 points over Alfian in a Kancil Turbo. Technically, Kenneth has already won the category, but he will nevertheless be there to participate.
In Class OB, form 1300 to 1600 cc, Maharith b. Mahat in a Proton Wira 1.6 leads Clement Yeo in a Honda Civic 1600 by five points, and looks set to win the category if he can hold it together.
In the 1600 to 2,000 cc class, Jason Foo has already won, with a 12 point lead over his closest rival, Julian Pang. In the novice category for cars in the 1600 to 2000 cc category, Mitch Chong leads Adrian Tan by 8 points.
In the novice category, Garick Goh in his Proton Satria 1.6 leads the pack with 32 points followed by William Lim with 28 points.
As usual the GRA Autocross event promises to be exciting and colourful; see you there!
