The AUTOCAR Asean Car of the Year Awards 2008 is an awards ceremony organised by MTM Publications to judge new models introduced between June 2007 and August this year . The awards honour vehicles in 14 categories to cover a wide spectrum of vehicles sold in Malaysia. Only vehicles assembled locally or officially imported by franchise holders are eligible.
From a list of more than 70 new models, 50 models were selected as finalists for the 14 categories. The categories include Small Sedan/ Hatchback, Compact Sedan/ Hatchback, Mid-size Sedan/ Hatchback, Large Sedan, Small/ Mid-size SUV, Large SUV, Mid-size Luxury Sedan, Small Luxury Hatchback/ Coupe, Compact Luxury Sedan, Large Luxury SUV, Small/ Medium MPV, Large MPV, Pick-up Truck and Performance Car.
A panel of four judges selected the finalists based on a variety of criteria, such as styling, utility, safety, features, build quality, brand image, ride, handling, economy, performance and value for money. Each model was assessed in local conditions and points were allocated for each criterion, with the model scoring the highest number of points winning the award in its category.
