UMW Toyota Motor Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Toyota distributor UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd tonight celebrated its 20th anniversary with a gala dinner at a leading hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The guest-of-honour at the event was the Acting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi while Toyota Motor Corporation was represented by Akio Toyoda, Managing Director of the Board.
Senior management of UMW Toyota Motor past and present as well as business associates of the company were also invited. Also specially invited to join in the celebration were the three past representatives of Toyota on the board of UMW Toyota Motor – S. Nishimoto, Y. Kido and N. Takahashi – who had held the position of Deputy Chairman of the company.
In his address to guests, UMW Toyota Motor Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Asmat Kamaludin said that the company, a joint-venture with Toyota, had gone from strength to strength in two decades to become the best-selling make in the non-national category.
Speaking on behalf of Toyota, Mr Toyoda congratulated UMW Toyota Motor on reaching the milestone and explained that his company had always considered Malaysia a stable and safe country to do business in. Mr Toyoda said that the company would continue to invest in Malaysia in future and maintain transfer of technology. He also reaffirmed Toyota’s commitment to its partner and distributor as well as to the country.
To commemorate the occasion, Toyota Motor Corporation made donations to WWF Malaysia and the Malayan Nature Society as well as donated one unit of the Toyota Prius hybrid car to the Malaysian government for permanent display at the National Science Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
