Inokom To Build Multi-Function Vehicle in 2002
Industri Otomotif Komersial (M) Sdn Bhd (Inokom) will be producing a Multi-Function Vehicle (MFV)in 2002. The basis of this vehicle is said to be the Atoz made by Hyundai Motor Company which will sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA)with Inokom tomorrow afternoon. The MoA is for the provision of parts and technology to make the MFV.
Since its inception in the 1990s, Inokom has been making only commercial vehicles (based on the Renault Trafic van and Hyundai Porter pick-up) and has been considered as national truck manufacturer. It is likely that the company, in which Renault and Hyundai have minor shares, will seek some sort of government exemptions in duties for the MFV.
Using the Atoz as the basis for the MFV would thus rule out its local assembly as a Hyundai product by Oriental-Hyundai, the Korean manufacturer’s third business partner in Malaysia.
More details tomorrow.
