I am interested to know if it is myths or truth about Bmw, Benz diesel cars will develop problems because of Malaysian diesel quality? Got some people said this was rumour started by Bmw for sales grabbing. Then I also heard Mercedes sales people also saying same things about Bmw. What about Toyota or Nissan or Mitsubishi suv who also used same common rail diesel principle engines? How come no rumours about them ah?
You belief or not?
If really that bad, how come they still selling it?
Ram me if you can!

Ya, selling like hot cake and have to wait - if I have extra cash and on my next car change I also want to buy their diesel powered cars! Already using 2 for more than 3 yrs, will still keep using diesel cars! so much torque, powerful and economy in fuel.

They say Mercedes cars having far more problem than Japanese car and expensive to repair. But Mercedes are still selling their cars here so bad or not bad does not necessarily have to do with sales.
I prefers to use my head than follow the crowd. After all, it is my money and not theirs.

I don't think it's a problem at all! I thing the problem shall be with Petronas coz they're the only sole gasoline brand that comes within Malaysia. But other brands like Petron, Shell, and Caltex would have different formula since these three brands aren't domestic companies.

When Toyota came out with the 1st common rail hilux, they also have so many problem but Toyota work together with Denso to make the pump and injector more reliable for Asian market cos our fuel quality is so bad. Where else continental car still using Bosch and it is made in Germany

Here is my 2cents. About diesel passenger cars in Malaysia. Reliability is affected because of:
1. Sulphur content (to a lesser degree)
2. Particulate content
3. Water content
4. Poor or insufficient water separation
5. Poor or in sufficient particulate filtration
So when the layman or lay mechanic refers to "dirty diesel" people just generally think of it as sulphur levels. Its not just about sulphur levels. Dirty Diesel should refer to diesel which contains water, particulates and sulphur.
What really kills the injectors and pumps in malaysia is the particulate and water content. Because malaysia is so humid compared to western countries our diesel absorbs more moisture through the air because its hygroscopic. Its very important that we have good water separators and change it often in Malaysia and drain the water often. I'm not sure about how the cars are made but the diesel trucks that I work on have a separate diesel filter to filter out particulates as well. The trucks that I worked on uses 1 water separator and 2 particulate filters in series.
Because the fuel system is running very very high pressure the fuel pump uses the diesel as a lubricant. When the diesel is contaminated with water the diesel begin to lose its lubricity and wear particles starts to float around in the pump and make its way to the injectors and damages the whole system. Along with that you have foreign particulate matter as well floating around to clog up the small gallerias and increase wear. That is why most diesel systems breakdown overtime in Malaysia and you normally don't hear of very many new vehicles diesel fuel system failure when new. It normally comes is 50,000km onwards. Because the newer generation bosch injectors are using piezo injectors which has very small galleries and holes its very important to get as much impurities out of the system and not cause any wear to the pump which can cause damage to the system.
For that reason I have not bought a diesel vehicle yet in Malaysia and i haven't found out yet about the water separator they are using and diesel particulate fuel filters being used in cars.
So if you do have a diesel car in malaysia, make sure you change your water separator and diesel fuel filter regularly and make sure you drain the water out from the system regularly as well. Also try to find a good petrol station which has many trucks filling up with diesel to make sure the diesel is fresh so you wont get diesel which has lots of water in it. Water also can get into the diesel through fuel tank sweating and also not having a good seal on the fuel filler cap.
For those who don't know and wanting to own a diesel vehicle. Never run the tank until empty because when you fill up the tank the engine won't be able to fire up because the fuel system must be blead of any air in the system. Its not like a petrol car where you can just fill it up a go.
Euro 1+2 diesel systems are more reliable because they are fully mechanical systems and don't need to be so tight in tolerances. But you get less economy, more smoke, less power and rougher & noisier engines. Euro 3,4,5 diesel systems uses piezo injectors and run common rail high pressure systems. So more care must be taken to ensure reliability.
So it has partly to do with our local diesel quality and cleanliness of the diesel and also partly to do with the design of the filtration system used in cars and the owner's knowledge of knowing how their diesel systems work and taking care of it.
Problem in Malaysia is the owners are not educated how to take care and how the whole system works and they think its just like a regular petrol car where you just fill up and go and can neglect the fuel system like a petrol car can be neglected (to a certain degree lah). In diesel its totally wrong and asking for trouble. In terms or mechanical reliability the diesels will be more reliable but the fuel system is very important and crucial to the proper functioning of the diesel engine as the amount of fuel, timing, and atomization of the fuel controls EVERY parameter of the engine performace as a diesel engine is NOT controlled using the throttle butterfly thus controlling air intake. So the whole engine performance is only controlled by one parameter which is fuel. Unlike a petrol where its controlled by air (throttle butterfly) and fuel (injection system). Thus much less forgiving if you neglect the diesel fuel system unlike a petrol engine fuel system can be neglected and easily corrected.
Hope this helps you guys figure out why we are have diesel problem is Malaysia.

My rides with Bosch diesel fuel pump and injector - still going strong without problem for more 200k kms? maybe it was made to suit asian market too?

they already stopped selling high tech diesel some time back. the truth is
BMW and merc were one of the pioneers on modern high tech diesels, even though highly aware of current low euro 2M diesel quality.
they tried, and failed miserably. during that time jaguar watched and learnt from their failure. merc was really hit with their CDI models, especially E class.
jaguar learnt by bmw/merc mistakes and brought in their turbodiesel XF and XJ, claiming it engineered for malaysia. what i understand is they removed the Diesel Particulate Filter to adapt to local diesels and it was a success. BMW has come back even stronger especially with their 2.0 engine on x1, 3 series and 5 series.
merc is playing with wait and see.

mine with delphi system running very good and already over 200k km.. change diesel filter max 40k km, clear the water separator regularly and use X1-r diesel treatment every 5k km.
some station have leak/dirty diesel if unlucky will damage the injector and pump. so avoid the small unpopular station.
after ML270 merz has not yet bring in any diesel model here.bmw still bring in the 320d,520d and i don't hear any problem so far.
jap here only only fit the common rail in pickup, no sedan, no suv. with what to compare the reliability?
