hi goofie333,

may be i share one or two words here.

I am from kuching. As far as i know, the second car in Sabah is extremely high as compared to Sarawak. And also, the car condition is also bad due to hilly road and high terrain area in Sabah.

Therefore i suggest you to take a look at car market in Kuching or Sibu (advise not look at bintulu and Miri 4wd because very exhaustly used in timber camp or palm oil mill).

if your budget is slightly higher ,i.e. RM70-80k, I advise you to consider prado tz 3.0 manufactured in year 1996 - 2000. Easier to look for this model at this price in Sarawak (Sabah is easily more than 90k - 110K).

One extra thing for sure is, the gov seldom use prado tz and it is still not bad to look for a good quality one.

Last but not the least, I know a purchasing officer in gov sector. He said that gov will normally buy those impopular car model (ie. pajero 2.8 or 2.5, toyota innova, toyota unser, Ford escape, trooper, big horn....etc etc) in the market in order to help the car dealers to clear the stock....ha ha no offence to all as this is just rumors and not proven.

Hi bwsy2002,
thanks for info, I know in Kuching cars cheaper, I'd say not cheaper but right price, but difficult for me to come there just to see a car maybe with my mechanic along, that's why I must find the car here. About the budget mine is around 50/60k for a Isuzu 3.1 TD BH 2001/2002 or 30k+ for year 1997, but even if I could spend 80/90k for car I still prefer Isuzu then Prado (Prado is a very good car), but it is just a matter of taste.

Do you know something about 2001 mitsubishi pajero 2.8 TD ? dealer selling one here for 48k, seems to be nice from "pictures" but I heard some issue with leaking in somewhere in the engine, I'm not sure, maybe the 2.5L. can help?
Thanks
Thanks

Hi goofie333,

I strongly advise you not to consider any pajero 2.8TD if you want to stay a peace of mind. Indeed, I did consider that model also before I bought my Prado Tz. There are plentiful pajero 2.8TD in Kuching here, ranging from RM30k to RM55k (V46 model).

If you read more forum thread here, you will get more feed back about this car. I have some bad experince with this model also. My neighbour was using pajero v46 2.8TD and I saw him keep on sending his car to workshop non stop. And he complained the engine oil always lead due to seal and oil ring problem. Although he changed all new spare part, that only lasts him for several months and the engine oil statrts to leak again. Finally he gave up and sold the car for RM20k only. Now he is using Hilux and so far he is quite happy with the new car.

For pajero 2.5, the problem seems lesser as there is not much complains about this model. But the feed back is the 2500cc pajero is a bit underpower.

Only a bit? That is an understatement if it is a non-turbo version. From standstill, you can fall asleep driving that thing. And when going uphill, you can walk faster than that vehicle.

haha, Tourist punya description is more accurate......"a bit" description is for those 2.5pajero with turbo ready. I had tested before n it is really no good for Sabah geographical condition.

in term of look, i will pick 4WD (from the 90's era) in the following order

1. land cruiser ninja 4.2
2. pajero 2.8 v46
3. prado 3.0
4. trooper
5. sorento

For my usage:
Ninja too big for town packing. Imported look much nicer but too expensive.

Pajero is sexy but too expensive imported and too problematic.

Prado is nice looking and nice to drive. Comfortable. But too expensive imported and less stable around corner.

Sorento. Don't know much about Korean and at the time, unknown quality. Never driven one so don't know.

Trooper. Unfashionable and hence cheap. But reliable, more roomy (rear seat even more roomy than big Ninja). More stable than Prado and may be possibly Pajero.

I prefers to use my head than follow the crowd. After all, it is my money and not theirs.

My selection is as follows (from the most favorable)

1. land cruiser ninja 4.2 (24valves imported).Wish to own one but the price is still skyly high and maintenance cost a bom.
2. Prado Tz 3.0 (imported). so far I own this model and maintenance cost is moderate.
3. Pajero 2.8 v46 (with turbo of course). The look is better than ninja or prado in my opinion. But just too many problems and there are lot of pajero flushing the second hand car showroom.

4. Trooper. Would like to consider initially due to its low price. However Sarawak Gov use mostly Trooper as public transport. So i would say there are not many good condition trooper or big horn in the second car showroom, mostly ex-gov car.

For cars of that era, I would pick those 2 also. Bighorn for performance and Prado for comfort. Pajero 2.5 is underpowered whereas the 2.8 is too problematic.

HI Tourist,
maybe you can help me, I found this car (Sabah), it looks very nice but I'm not sure with price:

Isuzu Bighorn (1999) 3.1 TD Auto new facelift CBU Japan fully imported asking 58K. I think not government car as Japan model, maybe only one owner (not yet checked registration card) mileage only 44.000 for sure already rolled back. Please give me your opinion. Urgent...Thank you very much

Ps. I just saw the registration card, and found out the car is not imported but Trooper model so that is mean is local assembled, got 7 seats but on paper only 5 seats and got Auto transmission but as I learnt from all of you Trooper doesn't come with Auto but only manual, in Malaysia. The first owner was a tyres company the second a company from Lahad Datu (I think something to see with planting), and I think there is a third owner who doesn't appear on registration card. Year made 1999 year registration 2000, but the car is in really nice condition, I would say too nice, also engine very nice and clean, also my mechanic says the car is too beautiful to be a 10 years old car. I'm just trying to figure out th history of this car...Please help me....

I know KMA do sell some 3.1TD Auto at RM170K+. I test drove a brand new one, either in 1999 or 2000. Not sure when. Tires fitted were 275/70R16 whereas previous KMA came with 31x10.5x15 tires instead. ACM all fitted their pre-facelift model with 245/70R16.

KMA model came with 7 seaters (not sure what the registration said till I go back to office). ACM came with 5 seats.
