Dear Forummers,

Test drive both the Hilux and Triton today. Can't really get hold of the handling, monuvering and so on for both cause the distance was short. Should hv offered them to put diesel and go a distance.
Well, the catch of my experienced today was...

Hilus SA : No need intercooler, we have soft turbo. It is proven and reliable.
Triton SA : Ours with intercooler, better performance and HP.

Well, can all the sifus out there care to share the differences between soft turbo and intercooler.
Which is the better element for our local climate?

Cheers... blink.gif

They are both not meant for racing. For space comfort and sparepart wise, I'll choose a Hilux.

For crash safety, Triton is NCAP star rated so safer.

I prefers to use my head than follow the crowd. After all, it is my money and not theirs.

NCAP rating is important but even more important is how the vehicle handle. NCAP rating is for after the fact ie you already a statistic.

Avoiding a collision is even more critical because during collision, many variable factors that can skew the safety to oblivion....

Having said that Triton is 4 star NCAP and also pass the elk test while Hilux is not NCAP rated and failed the elk test.

You may want to write off elk test but its a very simple test that prove a lot. The vehicle is driven at a specific speed and must be able to swerve to avoid an obstacle. In real life, that obstacle can be anything that blocked your heading direction. Obviously you can slammed on the brake but bear in mind, truck are HEAVY...

So in the process of evasion or swerve to avoid the collision, the vehicle will be rated if its able to get out of the situation.... The hilux failed and almost roll over if not for the expert test driver. You can view it in Youtube....

Toyota car often have inferior road holding compared to other brands. So IMO, handling isn't high priority for majority of buyer.

While most of truck buyer will have a mindset that handling will not be sedan-like, however the failing of elk test show just how dangerous it is on a taller vehicle and in this case Hilux. The amount of Minivan and truck running around couple with typical ignoramus and moronamus malaysian behavior, will increase the rolled-over incidents statistic soon.

Even me on highway, the amount of truck speeding past beyond 120km/h just amaze me... Granted I have been guilty of such at time with my Triton because the current breed of truck have such improvement on NVH that its give false confidence that its ok to push it like a sedan! All it take is a swerve... mind you the elk test was done below 80km/h...

Soft turbo without intercooler means the turbocharger is much smaller and downside of it, lower pulling power. That's why Hilux torque is just at 260NM compared to Triton at over 330NM. When comes to pickup truck, pulling power is vital, else the car would accelerate slower than 1.3L car. Both ok for local climate. With intercooler, you cool the air first before entering the combustion chamer as engines love dense oxygen. Without intercooler, as long as the turbocharger is real small, it blows slightly little more air into the engine giving it little better performance than engine without turbocharger at all.

We need torque not for speed but to keep pace with traffic without hogging the road. When offroad, we need the pulling power for trekking and winching up some loads.

hi ameniey!

Wah, so greedy. Just add intercooler wanted to charge buyers more? That only place it on par with competitors. Hilux selling price now is already few thousands more, now wanted to add more thousands? When it comes with intercooler, that means it'll be getting new turbocharger. Maybe with VGT?
