Hi everyone. I am glad to join the Volvo family.
I don't know if i will regret or not?
Seems like this monster is going to dig my pocket very deep...
Anyone care to share their experience with Volvo?
Especially when it comes to maintenance and parts replacement.
I am worry sick about the cost of repairing...
So far, this monster serve me well...

Your model is turbo charged or not ? Auto or manual ? If it's normal
aspirated and manual transmission, then I would say that you should not
worry too much about the engine and the power train. Regular maintenance
for normal car should suffice. Since you just got it, I would advise you
to check and change the following :
1. Timing belt & bearing
2. Water hoses & water pump
3. Engine Oil seals (if leaks are noticeable)
4. Radiator / expansion tank flush and pressure tested
5. Air & oil filter plus lubrication oil change
6. Auto transmission oil (if applicable)
7. Other beltings (alternator, air-cond)
8. etc.

I doubt if you'll regret it but I believe you might upgrade it later once
you see how fun it is to drive a Volvo, coupled with such nice (& legal)
experience with other Volvo drivers.

Congrats stewart80.

Agree with glock19. Just need the regular servicing. Apart from that, it
is highly likely that the odometer and speedometer is dead.

How much did you get yours for?

Thanks for your guideline.
BlueBrick you are correct, the speedometer is dead...
I bought it at RM9.5k, it's a manual.
I don't know much about car, am i stupid to sold my Corolla SE to get this?
But i like volvo so much.
My dad once told me i will regret... that sounds lame but i did it!

Good buy. You probably have the same exact copy as the one I'm driving.
What colour is yours? Mine is baby blue.

The major repairs that have seriously dented my bank balance, in order of
severity are,

1. The front bush sets, absorber, brake discs
2. Crank shaft pully
3. Air-con condenser (changed to japanese type. Seriousllyyy cold)

Repair 1 above made the car ride feel really good! Repair no 3 ensured
that passengers fall asleep like a baby. Only repair no 2 didn't have an
obvious effect on the car.

Fuel consumption, depends on how you drive. If you take it easy, I find
that it's quite ok. Definitely cheaper than paying installments for a
bloody proton.

And believe me, I know nuts about cars apart from driving them.

Welcome to the club :)

congratulations!! u got a very very reliable car!! btw, i calculated my
maintenance expenses for the '89 240 (240/740/940 maintenance dont differ
much, they are basically the same car especially 240 & 740 use many same
parts) for 2 years time and average maintenance cost per month will be
around RM150... this figure include routine service, plus change timing
belt, plugs, brake pads, long shaft mounting, ball joints, adjust whell
bearing.... I think the figure is very acceptable for a good and such old
car...

btw, dont worry much on repair costs, just use it, and don't forget regular
service, and when something broke down, get it repaired... as simple as
that...dont forget to find a good volvo mechanic... otherwise ur car kene
ketuk or ur pocket kene ketuk.... ehehehhe :)

Welcome stewart08. I've sort of had my 89 740 since new. Used to be my
daily driver. Don't skip on the maintenance and the car will run virtually
forever.
I just came back from a trip to Sg Renggit - 5 to 6 hours journey one way
and the 740 made the journey without any problem even at 110 to 120 km/h
steady on the highway. Even able to overtake lorries and buses on the
country roads comfortably revving up to 4000 rpm on occasions in 3rd.
Volvo's are tough and will perform if taken cared of even if they 16 years old.

stewart08, welcome to the world of RWD Volvo. I specify RWD is becuase FWD
VOlvo like to S40/S70/850/S60/S80/V50 are a different beast compare to our
740, sparepart also higher price compare to our RWD.

I owned a 740GLE 1990 manual but just recently converted into 940 230FT
turbo engine. My old engine was still running very good except the CIS
fuel system already show sign of deteriorating, that's why I dicided to
change the whole engine.

From my few years experienced with my former engine, I can say that B230E
is a good tough engine that can last many miles if given regular care. To
make sure it's working coditions, check all those stuff glock had itemise
it. You have a good machanic to work on Volvo ?? if you need one just let
us know, I am sure everyone here got themself a good Volvo guyto work on
their car, they can advise you. If you need to find one near KL specially
Sg.Besi area...let me know.

Stewart 08, congratulation on your purchase. I bet you won’t regret if you
had a good car purchased.
Eventually you may have to spend a few k to make you happy and make the
car more comfortable to drive. As what mentioned by glock19 get these
maintenance list done first as you may not know how the previous owner
treated this car.
Welcome to club.
SA6,
Finally you changed the engine. Now you beast is pack with extra power???.
