deliberating whether to recondition or swop for a used one, and against
popular advise, i decided to recondition/service my gb as it comes with a
6 months warranty. They did not do a good job and the gb has to be taken
down 3 times and the car was off the road 1 month.
Well finally settled for a used gb and it has been a dream since.
I think that the gb is a precision thing and not many people has has the
skills and the equipment to do a good job.Not withstanding that the
company is an established one.
My 2 sen worth.

Btw, you can also email me at ampangbear@yahoo.com

My 1996 855T5 is about 250K kms, already. In any case, while preparing for
a rainy day (as I'd really hate it to get stuck with my pants down) could
you please share the name of the workshop? Contact numbers, as well.
Thanks so much, man!

Sorry to distract you guys abit, but I need some information or point
of view. One of my bosses who own a used S60 T5 which the car suspected
got gear box problem. The service center he goes to quoted him more than
10k to fixed his problem. I feel he get slaughtered, but I'm not expert
on this area. Maybe you guys able to give me your point of view?
Many Thanks.

The gearbox problem could be software related as we don't see how your
boss came to the conclusion that the unit was faulty. Any indication like
what TBOng is facing ? Can the gears in the car be shifted into all
positions smoothly (when stationery and on the go) ? How's the feel during
launching ? Any burnt smell from the ATF dipstick ? Any strong jerks
during auto gear changes (up/down) ?
TBOng,
I think it could be the flywheel pickup sensor ? Can your car upshift to
4th gear ? Reverse okay ? Other symptoms like the above ? Are you sure
WINTER mode is not pressed ? How's the temp of the ATF ?

brinking together with the sport switch also lamda was on. Stop at the
tracffic light. I fell that the car did not change the gear to low gear.
I pull down the shift to go. I call up my machanic. He told me to start
moving the car by pulling down the shift to L than drive as manual car.
It would not spoile. Because might be the magnet swithc for 3gear was
lock. (did not release) He ask me when I am home. take of the battery
negative and wait until next morning. On next morning I put the negative
back. The arrow did not brinking but when start the car lamda on. I bring
the car to my machanic near bandar tasik selatan.
on the way to him arrow start brinking. My machanic took the car to his
brother's place and trace by tester. confirm the magnet switch need to be
replace. It take 2 days. Now the arrow is brinking. But the gear change
seen like normal. It can go to fourth gear. reverse also No problem No
jarking at all. Winter mode also not pressed.
Temp ATF unknow. But few like having burning smell. How to check the ATF
temp. Please advice
Thank You

Been away for a while, bit more busy now that I'm "doing my national
service"... anyway, glock, sorry to hear bout your gearbox....Ampangbear
(have we met??) , ditto for you...
Anyway, just want to add my 2 sen on the recond/ used gearbox discussion.
As most of the regular VOCM knows, I'm one of the early T5 owners who had
problems with my gearbox, and I had it rebuilt by SEH (they're in Puchong
now? They were in Segambut b4). This was back in December 2003. At the
time, I also found a halfcut used T5 gearbox in Klang...so the choice was,
RM 5600 for them to rebuilt my own gbox, or change to a used one for RM
3500. The former comes with 6 months warranty, the latter with 2 weeks...
I decided then to go with the devil that I know rather than the "perceived
" angel that I dont know..so got minne rebuilt. Glad to say that till
today, my 2nd wife (my T5 lor) is still leaving Satria GTIs, the 3 series,
and the Sedan Mercs breathing my smoke.. and last I checked with Turbolim's
Dyno ( a month ago), I'm very happy with the reported number of horses
still alive in my stable.
As for the used gbox in Klang, my mech actually intalled it into another T5
and (maybe the owners bad luck) unfortunately, I heard that it conked out
after 4 months..
So, my view, I'll always go for the rebuilt (of my own) , or a recond one.
