Glock,
Yah lor... What to do... Mechanic asked for 2 days to look into the oil
seals in the gearbox.
Anyway, thanks for informing us of the pros and cons of using a used
gearbox, instead of the reconditioned one. The few friends of mine who had
it changed into reconditioned ones so far, had good experiences,
especially where $$$ is concerned. (This part, I am doubtful, as well..)
In any case, really sorry to hear of your geabox, man. But if you may
share a little more information, how would you know the details of the
gearboxes? (As I have never gone for shopping of a gearbox, in my life) Do
the details come with the gearboxes? Or can you track it over the internet
for production details? And one more, dude - what's a JDM?
THanks! and Peace, man!

Hi AmpangB,
Thanks for the condolence, I need a hug-hug now and you're the right size
for it, hehehehehehe. Though I've not seen you, your previous posting did
mention that you came from a family of "Bears"..
Okay, back to serious stuffs. Our G/Boxes are the Aisin type 50-42-LE.
Normal 850s don't have the LE but we need to go a step further. Just
behind the air-box, there's a metal (Aluminum) plate on the g.box that has
1208 something. Original is 1208-840 but the one I got was 1208-890. So I
wonder if all the gear ratios are similar. JDM - Japanese Domestic Market
and this term is used alot on the BEST MOTORING / OPTIONS / etc VCDs.
Guess you don't fancy Jap cars neh ?
These days, I don't quite have the time to search in the net to confirm
the box numbers and it's too late also, I've bought the g.box already. I
was always thinking of opening my VADIS but no time also. Wah Lau....

Oi, oi, hug your wife lah.
Anyway, I have never changed a gearbox before, which explains the basic
questions.
In any case, so, have the G-Box been fitted? How does it
game so far?
Any tips for those nearing the 300K mileage mark?
HAHAHA...

Dear All,
Got my car back yesterday, everything was A Okay. My next phase will be
Valve Seals change along with additional ATF cooler and disc brakes
upgrade. Since I'm 2k away my next oil change, the timing will be just
right to do all these one shot. I will only do the ATF flushing when the
cooler is installed as oil will be coming out. Total amount paid for the
g/box, labour, engine seals, fluid, air-con gas, etc = RM 4,000.

The original ATF cooler of the T5 is intregrated into the radiator. You
can fit an independant/auxilary unit if you wish.
glock19 bought a used gearbox, not a rebuilt nor reconditioned one.

Uncle cap48,
In your opinion, which type of gearbox you think is a better buy ie used,
rebuilt, recon ?

I don't really know as I've not had a need to change/repair my gear boxes
so far (touch wood). If you've a good & reliable supplier, any "type"
should be good. Personally, I'll go for rebuilt as I would know what parts
have been changed (with new parts) although this alternative may be more
expensive. I've heard of some reconditioned gearboxes where old/used parts
are used to recondition the gearboxes. Basically, buying used is a gamble
you'll have to take. Sometimes, you'll get a good one but chances are that
you can get a lemon too. I would say that this is a personal choice which
we would have to make whether to get used, rebuilt or recon.
