KUALA LUMPUR: An average of eight cars are stolen in the city every day.
The thieves got away with more than RM18mil from the 376 cars reported
missing from Jan 1 until Tuesday.
This is a 30% increase compared to the same period last year.
Motorcycle thefts, however, were 17% lower.
City deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm (I) Datuk Ahmad Bahrin Idrus
said car owners must do more to secure their vehicles.
He said car theft cases alone made up about 15% of the overall crime
index in the city.
“Vehicle owners should install anti-vehicle theft systems or secure their
vehicles with an electronic immobiliser which automatically shuts down
the vehicle, preventing it from being driven away,” he added.
SAC Ahmad Bahrin said city police would concentrate on vehicles used in
relation to snatch thefts and other thefts.
“We aim to bring down the number of such cases as they involve theft and
assault,” he said.
He also said that city police achieved a 53% increase in its solving rate
last year compared to 2003.

Bear in mind this stats in only in KL. In the whole country, its about 2
cars every hour.
Number one on the list is Wira followed by Kancil. As for imported cars,
Unser tops the list.
