Hi,

I am on the market to get a new set of tyres for my 4wd. I'll be driving
97% onroad and 3% off it. To date, I have gone through 3 pairs of
Goodyear Wrangler HP and 1 pair Dunlop TG35. So far the Wrangler perform
well but the dunlop is close behind.

For size 255/65/R16 HT , I found out that the price per unit vary greatly.

Bridgestone Dueller RM700/unit in JB
Hankook RA07 RM 420/unit in JB
Goodyear Wrangler RM 620/unit in KL
Sime Alpina RM 395/unit in KL
Falken RM 470/unit in JB
Yokohama Geolander RM 370/unit in JB
Toyo (AT) RM 480/unit in JB
Pirelli Scorpion RM 850/unit in KL
Michelin Synchrone RM 800/unit in KL

anyone have some experience with these tyres? (even not same size).
care to share?

Bridgestone Dueller RM700/unit in JB

I've had experience with these. New thread pattern. It's made in Japan,
not Thailand or Indonesia. It's a soft compound but I've put on about 20k
on them and still about than 75% left. The new thread pattern is great in
wet roads cause of the huge grooves in the centre of tyre. Never
aquaplanned. Off road I was very very impressed. Went to a hard trail in
ulu yam and didn't bog down where I expected it to on my old AT Sime
Frontier tyre. Only downside is pebbles often get lodged inbetween those
huge grooves.

I'd prolly skip the HTs, noise and wear difference is negligible.

But at RM700, that's a lot. I'd say you were being robbed in daylight.

I got 235/75 15 for 295 ea in OCT 04. How can a couple sizes bigger be
more than double? Keewes paid well below 400 ea. for a 31 inch tyre.

Nan, I've heard that Toyo is one of the best in term of grip. In fact,
one kembara member has toyo tyres on his ride and he pretty recommends
it. But his is low-profile 17"ers... I suppose performance car tyres.
Pretty difficult to find a dealer.

My kembara rides on GY Fortera (look exactly the same as Wrangler HP,
maybe slightly narrower thread design - design specifically for SUV) and
I'll give 2 thumbs up for on-road performance. Quiet and grippy. Mine now
at about their half-lives, still perform as new (grip and noise wise).

The prices are spot price and bound to have some differences between same
size tyre.
However, there are some unfofular sizes like the 255/65/16 which most
dealer don't keep in stock. According to them, this is a dificult size to
move. Unless you are talking about the famous 265/70/15 or 16 which is
very common.
So the dealer quoted 700 a piece for 255/65/16 AT but only 435 for size
265/70/16 !..fuyooo..almost 270 more a piece for just being unpopular..

I think there are 2 issues there..one is whether AT ot Ht and the other
one is sizes.

For Dueller, it comes with white markers on the side walls. Did you
install it as usual or inside out?

Toyo is a good brand except in KL no too many dealer. But surprisingly in
around my area, there are 2 dealers selling Toyo exclusively...Actually
I am quite surprise by its low price compare to GY.

Fortera doesn't come in 255/65/16 size..only Wrangler HP form GY.

At the moment I am leaning towards Toyo or HP or even Yokohama.

So why dun you go with 265/70? A bit bigger is ok for a high torque
diesel. Save yourself over a grand.

Look at it this way. An AT is 75% of an HT tyre on the road. While an HT
tyre is 10% of an AT tyre off road. Probably 0% with mud and a drizzle.

I have the white side out.

Yup, very rare indeed. And I know Fortera's biggest size is only 225/70-
15 (Escape size iinm). But since the tyre pattern is quite similar
(narrower for Fortera), they must be about the same in performance. But
the GY tyre shop manager I frequent said that HP is slightly bumpier due
to harder construction and slightly heavier too (For kembara - HP is
available in kembara size).

Well, U should know better since U've 3 sets of experience with them. My
other tyres are BF Goodrich Touring T/A. Handling is not so good due to
soft sidewall. Comfort level is at par with GY Fortera but noisy after
just 40% of usage. So I'll stick to GY for on-road drive but at the
moment, looking for suitable AT tyres. Prolly 225/70 size. Itchy for
offroad trip Tongue

aadnana,

Why are your quoted prices so expensive? 700rm per piece! wow!

Anyway, have you considered Kumho? Apparently the AT and MT tyre are a good
performer and the price a little more realistic.

"So why dun you go with 265/70? A bit bigger is ok for a high torque

++ yeah..it is a huge saving.. but 265/70 is about 31" outside diam. as
oppose to 255/65 which is about 29" outside diam.

but I like the torque response and will hate to loose the torque pull. he
he..sometimes like to surprise those Wiras.

But the Yokohama Geolander looks competetive at 380/piece HT..

btw..just found out..Goodyear 245/.. is made in Malaysia but the 255 in
Germany..

white side out?.. yeah..with those AT thread lugs ,it looks just right.

Actually I have not even ask from those Synchrone or the Scorpions. They
cost more than 800 a piece..

Kumho ? I have yet to get a price for this. I intend to get the price
first. Will share the findings.
