Optra 1.6 fuel consumption rate?
Posted 20 December 2004 - 12:30 PM
Just brought an Optra 1.6 last 2 weeks, and I`ve found that the fuel
consumption is pretty high, RM60 of petrol only giving me about 400km++
(urban 65% + highway 35%) for new car under 1k milege, i was laping 60-
80kmp most of the time. Having 0.15++ cent per km for a 1.6 car,
definately is "drinking petrol"! However the salesman said fc for Optra
1.6 is about 0.12-0.14 per km and now I feel I`m abit cheater by the the
chevy salesman. Or is just that the problem only happen on my car?

is 0.13-0.14 with 50,50 highway and city. Travel everage 70kmh on smooth
road.Everyday travel 25KM,and you see significant drop at the fuel gauge.
I think after first service your FC will be like mine. Optra uses IRON
Block engine and normal camshaft so we cannot expect an ALTIS OR CIVIC FC
rate. Even Altis already 0.12-0.13 for 50/50 driving with VVti, what more
we can expect from our OPTRA??? As we only consume 2 cents more.
If you want slightly lower FC, try full syn. oil.
****Even I understand this, I still cannot accept the consumption rate of
my car. Try to make it lower by adding any kind of fuel saver.

Your SA is right actually. My Optra 1.6 is at 25K km and I'm averaging 11
km/l (or 12.9 sen/km). Fits the SA's description no?
Drive it a little bit more and the FC will improve.

By the way, does anyone has any method or install any devices to make fc
My frens did suggested some of the methods to make fuel more economic:
1. Installing Ecotek CB26P (lower fc)
2. Installing Broquet BOOSTMASTER IN-LINE UNITS B-30 (lower fc + increase
I dont know either it works or not, however I would like to read some of
the feedbacks from those who like to play around with fuel saving gadgets.

Some might cost you more than RM1,000++ just to get 1 cent save per KM .
Those that cost a few hundred bucks are even harder to see any
significant save on petrol and let's not talk about HP increase , they're
all bullshit .
If you wan good FC , do the followings :
1. dun use air-con
2. avoid heavy traffic
3. try not to carry passengers and loads
4. get rid of the catalytic converter
5. get a high performance drop in air element

Can you enlight me more about
1. why are you recommanded the removal of catalytic converter, and how a
catalytic converter works?
2. how to get a high performacence drop in air element?
I knew that optra has 2 fans and lotsa coolent running within, does this
mean that the engine heat up fast and easy to get overheated? Does heat
play a main factor in fc?
Ok, I`m a complete car dummy except driving it, pumping oil, changing
tyres plus sending car for services.

mine one, about 12000 KM now, full tank (around RM68), can only make up
around 400km, sometime less thn tht .... travel every day from
SriDamansara to TPM (through sg besi highway)

My FC is not too good either, but I have only done some 600km++,
therefore the engine hasn't totally run in. It still feels tight on the
engine. I'm doing something like 12liters/100km at the moment
I guess need to run in a bit.
Please bear in mind, petrol prices have gone up.
As long as we are achieving 10 liter/100km in city area, its ok.
Optra is 60 liters, which means full tank is Rm85.20
So if you are paying rm68, it means you are getting about 48liters of
petrol, which means you can travel about 480KM, pending on traffic
situations and the way you drive.
Investing in the full synthetic oil will help, as the lubricant is
lighter, just make sure the SC dont over pour above the MAX marking. Keep
the lubricant slightly lower than MAX, you might find your car lighter
when u step on the gas.
