The car is generally problem free - only if it is well taken care off. So
you should only be lookng to spend on the maintenance. Ensure that the
drive shaft is in good condition - as the car is finely balanced - as any
Audi, if there is even a little bit of wear og the gears..the car is going
to rock and roll!
The stock bhp is 165
Increasing HP maybe a bit difficult given that it is a NA. But you can
always drop in a high flow air filter and chage your A/F ratio.
There are some NA chips that can be used and has been discussed in other
threads here. Apart from that, you can always read through the threads
here (there are many hair brain schemes to increase HP). HOwever, not sure
how many has been tried in the 1999 A6.
Lowering the car is quite easy. Go for Eibach coil or B&G - seen these in
a couple of A6's. But the stock suspension doesn't seem to be a good match
for these coils. SO you may want to consider Koni adjustables. Konis will
set you back Rm1500 and Eibach Rm1400 (the whole set).
Its best to get a car that has already these arrangements, plus many more.
I saw 1 at this website: www.eoa.com.my.
Drop me a line if you want to know more about this model. I think I am
still the only one in the club driving the 1999 A6.

warning me about the gearbox. They are advicing me to go for 2000 model n
above but of course its more expensive. gearbox is serios problem
especially when i drive fast n planing to upgrade the engine. i test
drove the one in eoa before but it a cbu unit from uk with upgraded
engine and sports suspension but by looking at the interior one can see
its not well taken care off.
so i made up my mind its has to be 2000 model. i wonder what is the good
price for 2000 model.
i surfed the net and the most common a6 is 2.8L but 2.4L is very rare.
any reasong behind that?

I think a 2000 model should be between 130 to 150k on the open market. But
if you look at the past Motortrader magazines, you will see a 1999 goin
for about 150k! So you need to bargain hard.
The gearbox seems to be a problem on these models..so watch out. It can
cost up to 18k to rebuild. I personally know a few A6s out there that have
suffered gearbox failure. Buying a car that has had a gearbox failure is
not a problem, as long as it has been COMPLETELY rebuilt (this could cost
anywhere from 10 to 18k - depending on where you get it done). Some owner
only change the torque converter and pump..these are the ones you want to
avoid.
Changing the engine on 2.4 A6 for a more powerfull one may not be a good
idea. I was told by a reliable source that the A6 gearbox has pretty much
the same maximum tolerance as the 1.8T and rememeber the A6 drags around
more weight, so going for anything more that 200hp may be of some concern.
Best of luck in your hunt

on the price. if not I will go for a6 2000 and above model. very
spacious inside and beautiful car. And compared to B5 A4 the body of A6
is of latest model. with 18 inches rims and lowered suspension it will be
one of the sexiest cars on the road.
200 hp would be more than enough.:) i know 1.8T engine can be upgraded
from 150 to 187 hp by installing the chip. is there any chip upgrade for
2.4 a6 engine

Well I m have just got myself and Audi A6 2.4 99 model.
Nice silver :) car, but i do felt in love with it for years now.
Well planning to put in a 17inch rim replacement, and the car is glorious
i would say. Highly recommended, and solid car.
Bought it from my director, so it was "Ahmad" driven, so well kept.
We recently have another director car for sale, Audi A6 Feb 99 registered,
mileage 120k, Silver metallic, leather seat, 90% nice interior ( just need
minor spa touch up to make it 100% :) as I did for mine ) maybe need to
spend about 2-3 k to fix some minor wear and tear. R U interested, let me
know, so that we could have another Audi A6 gang on the road, and be
satisfied.
cheers man,
Happy A6 owner
