My OEM car alarm is not working and was quoted by Proton around RM800 to
have my alarm replaced.

I was wondering is it cheaper to have my alarm installed outside?

I was quoted RM300 made in Taiwan unbranded alarms. Are these usable?

Car alarm waste money wan laa....nobody is bother if your alarm goes off.
Go ahead try it, park your car in some public place and activate the
alarm, people will just take a look and walk away.
What you need I think is central locking for convenience., they cost
around RM100 only.

yes, i agree with taikoh and neutron.

i have seen how the alarm systems of a proton wira, a mercedes E class
and a toyota corolla are bypassed by this wireman in seremban. he only
used two rulers: one long with a hook and one straight short.

for convenience sake, go for central locking. however, when i was (am
still) looking for just the central locking system minus the alarm, i
couldnt get it anywhere. the available systems all came with alarm plus
remote. i tried looking for central locking with transmitter and without
(ie open with key only) but failed on both accounts.

for security sake, i'd say get external locks. eg steering locks, gear
locks, brake pedal locks. then again, i read somewhere that thieves just
saw straight through them. in the case of the steering locks, they just
cut the steering wheel and slide the lock off.

perhaps that system with satellite tracking thingamajig is worthwhile.

Don't ever have your alarm replaced at Proton. Just get any alarm from
the accessories shop and it will be cheaper and better quality. I beleive
Proton's alarm is either made in China or Taiwan.

Agreed. Car alarms are useless nowadays.

More importantly, need to install immobiliser if you have kids.

They can carjack you vehicle but they will not get very far though
