Gravel road....
Sound like u take it rallying..hahah

Not so much rallying - just regular country driving, gravel roads are pretty common over here.
(not saying that I don't have a bit of fun though...)
As a young bloke I spent a lot of time behind the steering wheels of twin cam FIAT 124'S running webber carbies,
3 litre V6 Ford Capri's and all sorts of fun toys - most with seriously tricked up suspension.......

the young bloke has grown older and greyer - but not necessarily grown up smile_blush.gif

Your model with 1.6 engine is only available as taxi over here.
Only when they introduce the facelift did they make 1.6 model available to the public with cvt gb.
your engine could be on a different state of tune is u said fc is very good.our 1.6 hav so-so fc.

Ours is a 2010 model - with the 4 speed auto, it seems to be well set up,
trickling along in traffic it is well behaved, but sink the boot in and it winds up pretty quick.
Induction noise is muffled pretty well by the air cleaner,
and I reckon it would have a real nice sound if it could breathe a bit easier

And...i bet u did notice the campro engine just luv high rev right?
The iafm helps it becomes interesting to rev.

Gidday Fellas,

A trip to KL sound pretty good to me, but it would mean bringing the wife along - which would get pricey
with her wanting to go shopping all the time. smile_blackeye.gif

Both hubs are off, brake shoes are getting relined, drums getting skimmed, and at the same time the
workshop is pressing out the old bearings and pressing in the new ones that our son picked up from a local
bearing shop this morning.

The bearings were $49 per wheel, a fraction of the price quoted by the dealerships.

The Proton sales companies over here have made a point of selling their cars cheap [compared to other brands]
It is only since the Chinese cars have started being sold that their prices have been beaten.

Our 2010 S16 is an automatic, with tinted windows and a few minor "extras", and it cost us $15500 [around 45000Ringgit]

Generally, over here an automatic sells for between $1000 and $2000 more than an equivalent manual model.

At the time, Proton were advertising the S16 as the cheapest car in Australia.
It might have been the truth - but it was a huge mistake to advertise this way, for in Australia, "cheap" is not
regarded as a low cost or economical purchase.
"Cheap" is regarded as low quality - in local slang "cheap and nasty".

The Proton Jumbuck is very popular here - as there is nothing of its type available, even though it keeps getting bad
publicity due to its very low safety ratings compared to modern vehicles.
[Subaru Brumby was popular for the same reason]

We chose the S16 [Saga] as it has much more room in the back compared to the other cars we were looking at - and
with the way my wife drives and treats vehicles there was no way I was going to buy her a Toyota or similar.

We have been pretty happy with the car - it handles pretty well compared to a lot of much more expensive vehicles,
it is pretty economical with fuel, and comfortable for long drives.
It handles gravel roads very well - nice and stable.
The only grumble I have is that you cannot fit a towbar, and the paint is a bit thin.

The first time I drove on a gravel road, the sills under the doors were badly affected - losing lots of paint.
As soon as I got home I sprayed a layer of underbody sealer on the sills and up to the trim part way up the doors.

glad that people appreciate the handling tuned by lotus wasnt just in the badge.... smile_thumbup.gif

and regard the bearing's price....that what would you expect from dealer price and direct bearing manufacturer price smile_approve.gif

similar case as mine here...since just replaced my subaru forester rear wheel bearing as well...a reputable subaru specialist (which is slightly cheaper than subaru dealer) quoted me MYR220/side on bearing alone....(around $80)....but i manage to order the exact same bearing directly from the bearing shop with just half of that....

glad that u enjoy this little car as much as we do.

well, we can only get the 1.3L model with MYR45,000. for the 1.6L model, it is selling close to MYR50,000 over here! more expensive than the selling price in Down South!!

Proton really absorbed the whole shipping costs OR they are making a loss OR they are making lots of money from their citizens over here. haha.

but our maintenance cost is really much cheaper since those parts are produced locally. smile_clown.gif

I am not sure how the pricing was worked out with the S16 [Saga] over here, but they went
to great lengths to advertise how cheap they were, which - as I pointed out before - wasn't the
smartest advertising idea as it actually hurt sales.

I don't think many S16's were imported - as we don't see that many around, I have only spotted a few in the area.

There was a shipment which was damaged by hail - not long before we purchased ours,
our insurance company had to be re-assured that ours was not damaged like the previous batch.

Jumbucks however are pretty common and desirable - even though everyone knows about the safety ratings.

If Proton were to do a newer version that met the modern standards and offer it at a decent price they would be on a winner.

Still having difficulty finding an on-line supplier of proton parts, any one have a link to one?

Another confusing thing is with the different names,

As I understand it, our S16 is a rebadged SAGA, 1.6litre IAFM CAMPRO engine / F4A4A 4 speed automatic transmission
The SAGA, is based on a lengthened SAVVY- with a Campro engine and either a manual or automatic transmission fitted.

But, I have read of "NEW SAGA" in a few places, so......what is a "NEW SAGA" and I presume an earlier model SAGA - and
when did they change?

Our S16 was made in early 2010 - so would it be an old or new - or some other model SAGA?

Thanks fellas,

Stephen.

New Saga is the one u drives.
Unlike normal practice of proton naming each new car even in the same category with a new names,in the saga case they retain the name.
which is why some people called it new saga. The 1st gen saga is based on mitsu fiore.
Other name people called the 2nd gen which we own are Saga BLM,saga Fl,Saga Flx.they are all 2nd gen proton saga.

Saga BLM refer to the 1st batch of the 2nd gen saga with the bigger headlamp.available in 1.3l ,1.6 for taxi only.1.3 se also available with leather seat and different alloy.

Saga fl is the facelift version with slimmer headlight and smaller tail light.available in 1.3.1.6 available as special edition with leather, cvt gb,bodykit and it looks good.

saga flx is the facelift version with cvt gearbox.available in 1.3l only.better fc than the normal 4 speed gb.

saga sv(super value) is the cheapest saga one can buy which has different trim material and ultra basic interior and acc.

great info!

bro, i think the Saga FL 1.6L comes with 4 speed auto, not the cvt, when it was available.

only when they lauch the FLX, cvt was introduced.

Gidday fellas,

Well, the wife's S16 is back on the road again.

Replaced the bearings [pressed in by the brake repair workshop] replaced the shoes, and drums were skimmed.
Went to put it all together and found that both slave cylinders were seized,

Did a google and found that DAEWOO Matiz rear brakes look very similar.

Back to the brake work shop, to do some cross-referencing - and found google pictures were right,
- matiz parts are the same.

Had some interesting moments bleeding the brakes..........

When I asked my wife to pump the brake pedal while I did the bleeding - she asked me which was the brake pedal!!

about the rear bearing,i did removed my rear drum to adjust the thing that control how high u pull the handbrake lever till the shoe lock the drum into place.
i notice the wheel bearing was made in Korea which is not usual practice where its made in japan. When u mention the part is the same with Daewoo then i recall that for the pre facelift saga,LG or Samsung design house is responsible for the exterior look.Maybe some other arrangement for parts also involved.

Which one is the brake pedal,Seriously?
What name does she call it all this while...stop pedal, big pedal,or maybe slow down pedal?

Wife arrived home to tell me she broke the car again!

Drivers door window was stuck down and wouldn't go back up.

She tried "pushing" the switch a few times [more likely belted the living daylights out of it]

I stripped the door to test the motor and it worked both up and down if 12 volts was applied directly [bypassing the switch]
- but I found a lot of little bits when I took the door skin off.

The switch had fallen apart inside the door panel - luckily all the springs, metal rocker pieces, plastic rods
and the bottom cover plate were all trapped between the door trim and the plastic dust sheet that is glued to the door.

I spent an hour or so figuring out how the switch goes back together - and gave it a little grease in a few spots, then put
everything back together.

It all seems OK for now - and if it happens again, I could rebuild the switch in a few minutes - as long as none of
the tiny parts don't get lost.

Anyone know if these switches are common with any other vehicles - or are they a "Proton S16 / SAGA specific item".

i got my pwr window switches replaced during the warranty period.

the driver side was replaced TWICE. first occassion because the original switch from factory failed intermittently.
the second replacement was for both sides because Proton issued a memo to all SCs to change to an 'upgraded' version, altho there's no problem for me at that time.

not sure whether it's common with other vehicles or not though.
