Is the petrol consumption very heavy, plus other costs like road tax/insurance, tyres or engine tune-ups and other maintenances ?
Why buy a used Proton MYVI or Toyota which cost so much more than an old Mercedes?
Glad to have your opinions based on experience and facts.

I think the old mercedes are cheap simply because they're old considering their age which is exceeding 15 years already. If we take other car models the same age, the other models will be cheaper. For example, a pre-95 Honda Accord costs less than RM20K while a mercedes the same age will cost more than RM25K generally... depending on conditions.
And that's an Accord. Other 'sejuk' models will be a lot cheaper. 1995 Proton is already below RM10K. Looking at it that way, the Mercedes is still relatively expensive.
Furthermore, cars this age cannot be purchased on loan and you have to buy it cash or through credit financing which is expensive. That again forces the price to drop coz a guy has to fork out RM25K cash to drive it home.
Maintenance wise, the Mercedes is not that bad considering abundance of available parts though it's not that cheap compared to Proton's parts. Furthermore, Mercedes parts last longer and don't break down that often.
The only think I don't like about these old cars is the fact that it feels old, smells old and lack of modern features. I can't help of feeling old when I'm driving my father's 1991 W124.

Some people like the safety feature of the solid bodies of these old Mercedes. We also don't have to go back to 1994-5; even some Mercedes 2000-2005 are offered at prices below RM20K. I wonder whether these are genuine offers.

Sounds fishy... Maybe that's just the downpayment.

For example, some people brought in cars from UK using AP and registered in Malaysia after 2000 although the cars were actually manufactured bedore 1995...

Cheap is relative. For a Continental car that is 17 years old that is expensive. You can get a 1997 Volvo which less expensive parts for less than 13K and in good condition. I find used Merc, BMW, Toyota, Honda always higher selling value compared to other makes.
And if you compare what other countries are paying for a car that OLD, we are paying much MORE.

Parts are pretty expensive.
