Don't believe too much in your mirrors, remember to physically look back over your shoulder as there is something call "blind spot"

Make sure the road ahead is clear so you have sufficient expanse to permit you to overtake and get back to your own side of the street without compelling any other street user to move to bypass you. When you are well past, ascertain the reflector, pointer and step-by-step move in afresh making sure not to slash over the vehicle you have passed.

Overtaking is a hugely risky move in a vehicle and should be always performed in optimal circumstances. Your driver skill and experience first and foremost. Depending on the speed of the vehicle in front you might have had to change down a gear, in order to maximise your acceleration while overtaking.
