WOODONE ADVAN Clarion GT-R

The Super GT International Series In Malaysia, Round 4 of the 2008 Autobacs Super GT, was held at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia on June 22 and the WOODONE ADVAN Clarion GT-R driven by the pair of Joao Paulo Lima De Oliveira and Seiji Ara came through to win its first race of the season in the GT500 class. This was the second consecutive victory for this team at the Sepang round.

The race started a 16:00 in the late afternoon to avoid the mid-day tropical heat. Starting from 4th position on the grid, Joao Paulo Lima De Oliveira did the first stint at the wheel of the WOODONE ADVAN Clarion GT-R and passed one machine on the first lap to move into 3rd position. He brought the machine into the pit on the 25th lap and turned over the wheel to teammate Seiji Ara. Ahead of Ara, the 1st and 2nd place qualifiers, the MOTUL AUTECH GT-R and the ARTA NSX, were battling for the lead, but the two machines collided when the NSX was trying to pass the GT-R. The NSX was given a drive-trough penalty  for this, which enabled Ara to move into 2nd position. Then on the 50th lap, when the leading MOTUL AUTECH GT-R lost acceleration momentarily exiting the second corner, Ara passed it and raced onto the checkered an victory at the at the end of the 54th lap.

MOTUL AUTECH GT-R

This is the first victory for MOTUL AUTECH GT-R since last year’s round four at Sepang in June. Thus it is also the second consecutive victory for this team at the Sepang round. It is also the second Super GT win for the team managed by former Japanese celebrity Masahiko Kondo, popularly known as Match. For Nissan GT-R teams, this is the third victory of the season, following wins at the season opener and round two. It is also the third 1-2 victory for the GT-R.

The GT300 class victory went to the No. 77 CUSCO DUNLOP SUBARU IMPREZA driven by Tetsuya Yamano and Kota Sasaki. This was the first Super GT win for the IMPREZA since September of 1998 (Round 5, Motegi).

No. 24 WOODONE ADVAN Clarion GT-R [GT500]
Joao Paulo Lima De Oliveira: “Fantastic! Nothing can beat this feeling. The team, the crew, the tires, everything was in great condition, so I was confident we could win. Last year, ours was a come-from-behind win. But this year the lead machines were also very fast and it was a difficult race where we had to push, push and push the whole race.”

Seiji Ara: “As a team, we were aiming for a win here at Sepang. Our Yokohama tires were better in every aspect compared to last year, and that helped us go into the race more aggressively than ever. De Oliviera got us a good position in yesterday’s qualifying and he turned the machine over to me today in a good position, which made things easier for us. Both the machine and the tires performed with good consistency and we expected to have a close competition with the other GT-R machines, but it looks like we had more to spare than machine No. 22. The performance was especially good in the low-speed turns, and when No. 22 made a mistake, I was able to pass it with no sweat.”

No. 77 CUSCO DUNLOP SUBARU IMPREZA [GT300]
Tetsuya Yamano: “Kota [Sasaki] got the pole position for us, so I had a very easy start. The team had told me to go out and get us a 15-second margin and I was able to do that, so it was a perfect race for me. Two years ago, our team manager, Mr. Omizo, brought me to this team saying that he wanted me to help them win with the Impreza. Last year we tried but couldn’t turn the effort into results. This year the machine has been very good, so we really wanted that first win, and everyone on the team was determined that this race at Sepang would be it. Everyone did there job to give us this win. I am really happy.”

Kota Sasaki: “This is the first time in my life that I have gotten three wins at one event. It has been a fantastic weekend. I am really grateful to all the staff on the team. Yamano-san got us a good margin over 2nd place, but our pit work takes time, so things were very close. I knew the machine was fast, and that made things easier for me mentally, but there were some worries about the durability of the course of a full race, so I was paying full attention to everything. For me this was just another win, but when I think about how long and hard the team has worked for this win, I really feel the weight of it.”

Desperate for championship points, Michael Krumm took his NISMO Nissan GT-R to the top of the grid after taking pole position in qualifying at the 2008 Super GT International Series Malaysia at Sepang Circuit today.

“It will be good to win tomorrow; but what’s more important is to collect as much championship points as possible,” said Michael, who would be seeking his second win in Sepang after topping the inaugural race in 2000.

Partnering Masataka Yanagida, Michael said that starting from pole position would provide them ‘the prime position’ to take control of the race; but he was quick to add that it would be a very tough race tomorrow.

“The race is going to be very hot and very tough. The Honda machines have always been fast in Sepang and I expect them to be very quick as well tomorrow. However, we have a very good car and we are ready to go all out for victory,” said Michael, who clocked 1 minute 55.155 seconds around the 5.543-km Sepang Circuit.

A two-time overall champion, Krumm also said that he benefited from his early stay in Malaysia when he joined Sepang International Circuit and the GTA team in some promotional activities for the race.

“It’s good to be here early and get acclimatized for the race. The weather here is very hot and challenging. I also had a lot of training during my stay here and that obviously helped me,” said Michael who arrived in Kuala Lumpur last Friday.

Sixth in the overall standings and failing to collect a single point in the last two races, Michael said that he would need to score points in all upcoming rounds because the rules would take into account only seven best results from the nine rounds.

Former F1 driver Ralph Firman, driving a Honda NSX, was second fastest with a time 1 minute 55.356 seconds and Toshiro Kaneishi, in another Honda NSX machine, was third fastest with a time of 1 minute 55.443 seconds.

Representing Team Cusco Racing, Kuota Sasaki was fastest in the GT300 class with a time of 2 minutes 7.530 seconds in his Subaru Impreza machine.

Sepang hosts Round 4 of the nine-round championship and the race tomorrow starts at 4pm

Going all out to reaffirm its position as Malaysia’s No.1 Motoring Friend, the Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) has introduced an Accident Care Program that has been designed to assist members in their time of difficulty and need.

The program is an extra service and benefit introduced for Cruize Visa, Shape Lady’s & A1 Team Malaysia card holders who also purchase AAM’s Autopal motor insurance. Autopal’s existing benefits already include 24-hour breakdown assistance available throughout Malaysia, supported by more than 200 workshops and AAM’s breakdown centres, and minor-on-the-spot repair services.

Under the Accident Care Program, AAM will assist members who are involved in an accident that occurs within the Free Breakdown Zone.

In the event of an accident, personnel from the nearest AAM call centre will be immediately dispatched to the scene to assist and provide members with guidance. This is also to ensure that members are protected from being bullied by unscrupulous tow-truck and independent workshop operators.

AAM has also set-up a special motorcycle patrol unit for the purpose of dispatching its personnel to the scene of the accident quickly.

Under the scheme, the vehicle involved in the accident must be the member’s registered vehicle with AAM and is insured by Autopal.

The damaged vehicle will then be towed by an appointed panel workshop or tow truck operator to the police station and than to the workshop.

“We designed this program to safeguard our members in their hour of need,” said AAM Chairman Tengku Datuk Mudzaffar Tunku Mustapha.

The initiative is part of an ongoing effort to reorganize and enhance operations at AAM towards extending greater as well as innovative benefits, convenience and services to its members,

“Addressing all critical areas will ensure the continued success of AAM as well as enable us to not only adapt quickly and become flexible in our processes, but embrace the single-mindedness to strive for enhanced quality, services and greater customer satisfaction,” said Tunku Mudzaffar.

Upon request, AAM can also arrange transportation for the member (not more than 4 persons) to any location within the same AAM Free Breakdown Zone where the accident occurred.

AAM also offers members an independent and unbiased vehicle inspection after the accident repair.
Please contact the AAM Inspection Unit at 03-26111780/ 1779 or call any nearest AAM office to fix an appointment.
Established in 1932 and considered as the country’s No. 1 Motoring Friend, the AAM acts as the official spokesperson for Malaysian motor vehicle owners and champion their rights to adequate roads and the safe use of these roads.

AAM is committed to creating greater road safety awareness and has also embarked on a number of programs and activities designed to instill safer motoring.

This new baby follows the Nagare concept.Nagare means flowing so expect this SUV concept to have flamboyant lines and exotic detailing just like the Nagare concept car.

These three sketches are the first hint to what the new car will look like and judging from the drawings, it will probably have hints of the gorgeous SX9 but have a bit more drama.

It is great to see a great car company like Mazda, which has focused its effort on driver enjoyment, finding a wonderful new design language that could push it back onto the top rung of the automotive industry.

It is a long time coming and I am happy to see Mazda on the path to greatness.

Below is the full Press release

New Mazda Concept Car to Premiere at Moscow International Automobile Salon

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda will present an all-new show car at this year’s Moscow International Automobile Salon. The concept is a sporty, compact crossover SUV designed especially for the Russian market.

The Moscow show car is the latest concept to be developed using the new design direction called Nagare – following in the footsteps of Nagare, Ryuga, Hakaze, Taiki and Furai. Nagare, which means “flow” in Japanese, represents a new approach to expressing movement in car design, taking as inspiration the flow patterns of natural elements, such as the wind. The design theme of Mazda’s concept for the 2008 Moscow motor show is “crosswinds”.

Compact crossover SUV concept

ussia is one of Europe’s fastest-growing markets and is rapidly becoming the region’s largest automobile market. SUVs are particularly popular in Russia, with a segment share of about 20 percent. Mazda’s latest concept car is designed to appeal particularly to younger SUV owners who have a strong sense of style.

The Moscow show car, the name of which will be announced in due course, again showcases the depth of creativity within Mazda design. In February 2008, the Mazda Design team received the coveted Grand Prix du Design at the Festival Automobile International in Paris.

The Moscow International Automobile Salon media days are on August 26 and 27, whereas August 28 caters for industry and trade specialists. The show is open to the public from August 29 through September 7. The new show car will be unveiled at the Mazda press conference at 10:15 on August 26 at the Mazda stand.

The Suzuki SX4 is not what it seems, looking tall and a bit like a crossover MPV, this car is actually just an oversized hatchback.

With its high roof and roomy cabin, the SX4 is a well sorted out family transport and deserves more consideration from the market.

r1.jpg

The modern and expressive styling is a breath of fresh air, thanks to its high roof, this car literally stands out in a crowd.

From the front we see the trademark Suzuki S framed by a neat grille and swooping headlamp design that helps to give it a unique face. Unlike many other unique faces, this one is actually a pleasure to look at.

The oversized and slightly aggressive bumper with its large underbreather and foglamps blend perfectly into the flared wheel arches to create a wide and sporty stance.

Those flared arches work very well fromt eh side as well, giving the SX-4 a bottom heavy look that lends visual stability.r5.jpg

r4.jpg

r3.jpg

Once inside, the reason for the SX-4’s oversized proportions become obvious. The high roof does wonders to create an airy cabin within it’s modest wheelbase and track.

Everything in the passenger compartment has been designed with practicality as the guiding principle. The front seats are large and comfortable, if lacking in side support while the rear bench is relatively flat and can take three large adults at a pinch.

The dashboard design is typical of modern Suzuki, simple bordering on austere.

To help lift the dark dashboard, designers have given it a nice aluminium detailing. It flanks the centre console like twin metal pillars holding up the dashboard

r6.jpg

Suzuki says the chassis has been tuned for drive pleasure, well this is true to some extent.

For a relatively soft sprung vehicle, the SX-4 enters corners confidently and they can hold the line accurately at normal speeds.

We did not really push it hard but on the few corners that we intentionally approached at higher than recommended speed, the SX-4 will tuck in neatly if you just lift the throttle so it is a safe car for all drivers.

The SX-4 is at home both in the city and the highway where the soft suspension absorbs all road irregularities while the well judged dampers keep body movement under check on medium and long undulations.

Our verdict: This is definitely a car that you should consider if you are looking for a family hatchback, especially since it hits the sweet spot in terms of price.

Pegged at RM87,450 (OTW without insurance) this fully imported Suzuki is great value for money expecially when you compare it with the other Japanese competitors be they hatchback or saloon.

Over 80 Toyota vehicles took part in the Tribe Toyota- Amazing Trails 2008 which centred around the hunt for good food.

Members gathered as early as 6:30 am to register themselves for a fun-filled day looking for food.

The Amazing Trails treasure hunt is different from the regular hunts as it incorporated activities that involved teamwork and mild physical challenges.

At one of the stops, a local café in TTDI that serves organic food, participants had to roll a giant dice to choose from a menu of 1 of 6 drinks, blended from different organic ingredients.

rat08-5.jpg

Batu Caves was also another stop point, where the participants had to climb 272 steps to get one of the clues after which, a “teh tarik” challenge awaited them.

At the final stage, participants had to go through the “ mix-of-spices” challenge; members were put to test where different spices were mixed up together and they had to identify which were the spices they tasted.

The hunt ended at Genting Sempah before the participants headed up to Genting Highland for a night’s stay and the prize presentation.

The prize presentation and dinner was held at the Genting International Convention Centre (GICC).

muhyiddin-at-kawasaki-motors-malaysia.jpg

The National Automotive Policy, which was designed to give extra incentive for manufacturers to locally assemble their cars has sometimes been accused of being too protective of the local auto industry but then again that was the intention of the policy drafters.

With oil prices shooting up, Minister of International Trade and Industry, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says that they are studying the NAP for possible revision and apart from taking a closer look at the protectionist clauses, the ministry will also look at ways to encourage the sale of fuel efficient cars in the country.

He told reporters this at teh launch of Kawasaki Motors Malaysia’s new factory in Glenmarie Shah Alam.

Muhyiddin said that the time is right for them to look at ways to help Malaysians save fuel through the introduction of new technology that can significantly reduce fuel costs.

He said that ministry officials are poring over the policy and would take a few weeks before they can come up with recommendations.

Honda is the only company offering Hybrid technology in Malaysia but the lack of any incentives means that the fuel efficient car is priced significantly higher than teh standard 1.8-litre hybrid, making it unattractive to the average buyer.

So far they have sold a handful of Civic Hybrid, mostly to well-off older buyers who feel they want to do somethign about the enviroment and make a statement.

The industry has been pushing for better quality fuel, especially diesel so that they can bring the latest fuel sipper to the country but subsidy issues and the related price cap have made it very difficult for the oil producers and retailers to offer higher grade fuels.

At the same time, Energy Telecommunicatiosn and Water Minister, Datuk Shaziman Mansor told Autoworld Blog that the ministry is working on an energy policy for the country but admits that their scope of work is limited to the needs of the country in terms of power generation so it may not encompass transportation energy needs.

As the Government plans to gradually reduce fuel subsidy to 30 sen per litre, we well see petrol prices rise further in the near future and this makes it more urgent for them to introduce fuel efficient technologies as it can save the Government billions in terms of subsidy and push Proton to take the plunge into similar areas.

rtoyota_aygo_crazy_11.jpg

It’s always nice to see the crazier side of Toyota. This time they came up with a mid-engined 200 horsepower Aygo that not only looks great but goes like a bat out of Hell

rtoyota_aygo_crazy_8.jpg

Powered by the same 1.8-litre VVTI unit found in the Celica and MR2 roadster, they bolted on a TRD turbocharger to make it special.

rtoyota_aygo_crazy_2.jpg

The body is custom made so that it can take the engine amidship, afew inches behind the driver seat. The shell was also cut up so that it could receive the entire suspension from the MR2

.rtoyota_aygo_crazy_1.jpg

It rides on a set of 17-inch alloys and thick, sticky Goodyear 225/45 rubber along with a carbon fibre rear wing that would not look out of place on a Formula One car.

rtoyota_aygo_crazy_7.jpg

The suspension comes straight from the MR2 Roadster, with MacPherson struts front and rear qand adjustable Tein dampers while the front and rear track are one inch wider than on a standard Aygo.

Weighing in at just 1,050kg (approx 2,200 lbs), Aygo Crazy is capable of going from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in 5.7sec and on to an estimated top speed of 127mph or 204 km/h.

It will debut at teh London Motor Show at the end of July.

Asian Touring Car Series
Round 5
Sepang International Circuit – 16 June 2008

Jack Lemvard took the chequered flag in a hot and action packed Round 5 Asian Touring Car Series race at Sepang International Circuit today. The Thai driver reclaimed the lead in the Championship points table after being on equal points with his great rival, Melvin Choo, going into this race.

As the lights went off for the start of the race, the 20 car grid got off the lines clean and with the top six being positioned in a reverse grid order, with Daniel Amante Gomes in pole, there was a great rush to the first turn.

Following the reverse grid start for the top 8 drivers, Lemvard got to the leading bunch at the first turn and continued to make his way past the leading cars of Henry Ho and Mak Ka Lok before getting Gomes at turns three and four. From there, he pulled a gap away from Choo, who was stuck in the middle of the three Macau drivers, unable to find a clean path through.

“My start was good and I think Melvin had a great start as well but he got boxed in. I went on the outside and I passed three cars at the first corner and I was in second. I was lucky because I broke away from Melvin, he was stuck behind all the Hondas.

“By turn 4, I passed into first and pulled out quite a big lead with a seven second gap. Then Melvin started to chase me down. I saw he was quite far behind so I just kept a consistent 1 minute 10.5 and 10.4 seconds so it was quite good. Then we had the back markers and that’s where he caught me quite a lot” said Lemvard during the post race press conference.

Choo managed to catch up to the race leader as the duo began to pass back markers. The Singaporean began to close in on Lemvard at lap 16 and was on his tail at lap 17. He then tried twice to make his move, overtaking once at the first corner and then again at turn three on the next lap, but Choo could not make the moves stick.

“The start for me was good but I was unfortunately boxed in by the cars in front of me, which gave Jack a chance to pull away.

“I worked really hard and I knew we would come up to the back markers, so I was hoping the back markers would affect him more than me. In the end I had a chance to make a couple of moves, it didn’t stick though. At the end, everyone got home safe and it was good racing” said Choo.

Third placed finisher, Henry Ho had a tough time during the race, after managing to overtake the front starting cars, he had a spin on lap three at the last turn. The spin allowed five cars to pass him dropping him down to eighth. He then fought his way back up the ranks to finally finish the race in third.

“At the start, the two cars behind me were really quick, they were two seconds faster than me and the cars in front were on the 15inch tyres giving them a better start. It is a short circuit so it was pretty hard to overtake them. I managed to get to third and then the BMW of Melvin overtook me. I tried to chase him but couldn’t so I just maintained my pace and tried to beat myself by clocking faster times.

“Then I made a mistake at the last corner. I spun and a few cars passed me so I had to give chase. It took me quite a few laps before I managed to claim back my third place” said Ho in closing.

In Division 2, Macau driver Lui Man Kit claimed the win ahead of Malaysian Eric Yeo and Adrian Henry D’Silva.

Two-time Sepang Super GT winner Michael Krumm today provided a sneak preview of the hot battle awaiting at the upcoming 2008 Super GT International Series Malaysia at Sunway Pyramid and immediately declared that he was ready to claim his third victory on Malaysian soil.

Driving the Xanavi NISMO Skyline race machine, Krumm, who is a two-time overall champion, thrilled the crowd at the open car park area as he drummed the machine to its thunderous roar and making squeeking ‘dough-nut’ spins around the open car park area.

Speaking at a press conference before the Street Demo, the German driver said the 2008 Nissan GT-R machine would be ‘much more powerful’ than the one used at the street demo; adding the race in Sepang would be an exciting thrilling affair for the fans.

“What you are about to see here will just be a small portion of the real action that would be happening in Sepang next weekend; it’s just to give you a feeling of the atmosphere of the race,” said Krumm, who would be partnering Japan’s Masataka Yanagida for the race.

Sepang hosts Round 4 of a nine-round 2008 Super GT International Series, which Krumm said had not started to well for the team; leaving them in sixth position with 18 points. The series is currently led by their Nismo Xanavi team-mates Satoshi Motoyama and Benoit Treluyer with 48 points.

After coming in second in the opening race in Suzuka, Krumm and Yanagida crashed in Round 2 at Okayama International Circuit and failed to score a single point in Round 3 at Fuji Speedway last month.

“I am looking forward to the Sepang race next weekend and for a change of luck for the remaining of the season. We would be going all out for the win and there is a 70 percent chance that we could do it,” said Krumm, who won in Sepang at the inaugural race in 2000 and in 2004 – all in a Nissan NISMO machine.

“In general, Sepang track favour the Honda NSX machines, so they would be strong. Having said that, it is very difficult to predict as the Super GT races over the last few years have been very close,” said Krumm, who hoped it does not rain next Sunday.

“I hope it will be very, very hot and very, very dry … I love it hot and dry,” said Krumm, who said that he had always liked the Sepang track because of its combination of fast and slows corners and its width that provide opportunities to try different racing lines.

Born on March 19, 1970, Krumm made an immediate impact in his racing debut in the German Formula Ford 1600 and won the German Formula Ford Series champion in the following year.

In 1990, he won the German Formula Opel Lotus Series champion and in 1993, Krumm won the All Japan F3 Championship before winning his first Japan GT crown in 1997.

“I have enjoyed my racing in Japan very much and I hope to continue to do this in a couple more years. It has been fun and exciting,” added Krumm.
