Caltex_Fuelling the future of Malaysia_Grab Malaysia_ChevronChevron Malaysia Ltd has dressed up 62 Grab cars in Caltex with Techron livery as part of the brand’s ‘Fuelling The Future Of Malaysia’, as well as to mark the country’s 62nd Merdeka. “Since our presence here from 1936, Caltex has had the privilege to be part of the tremendous growth which Malaysia has achieved. Today, we have more than 400 Caltex service stations around the country carrying our proprietary Caltex with Techron fuel,” said Shahid Ahmed, Chevron’s Country Chairman for Malaysia.

Caltex_Fuelled To Win Campaign_2019_MalaysiaThe ‘Fuelling The Future Of Malaysia’ campaign is a nod to the Caltex brand’s rich history and its long-term commitment to Malaysia. The livery on the cars of Grab Malaysia, the ride-hailing service, also serves to remind motorists of Caltex fuel’s recent success at a Guinness World Record feat with a 28-year-old car.

“The new livery not only shouts about the achievement but is also symbolic of our growth with the country through these 62 years of independence. This campaign, in many ways, reiterates our commitment to continue powering the nation’s progress true to our theme, ‘Fuelling The Future Of Malaysia,” added Shahid.

This campaign also involves giving Caltex customers a chance to win a Volvo XC40 SUV (among other prizes), with a minimum purchase of RM40 worth of fuel at any Caltex service station nationwide. This promotion will end on 31 October 2019.

Chevron Malaysia Ltd_Caltex_Grab Malaysia_Hans IsaacOn-hand to meet the Grab car drivers and Caltex customers was Dato’ Hans Isaac as Caltex Malaysia’s Celebrity Partner. “With the new livery donned by these cars, I feel proud that as a nation, we have progressed so much and that Caltex has always been there to witness it. You can tell that through it all, Caltex has always been committed to its customers. But more than that, they are renowned for their high-quality fuels and products. I personally know many drivers who use Caltex with Techron as their fuel of choice and being a user myself, I truly attest to its benefits, which was also recently proven in Chiang Rai,” he said.

Schneider Electric_Resorts World Genting_Awana_EVlink Smart Wallbox_Charging Station_MalaysiaEnergy management and automation company, Schneider Electric, has partnered with Resorts World Genting, an integrated resort, to launch its first electric vehicle charging stations. A total of nine charging bays have been established at the Awana SkyCentral Transportation Hub Carpark (level B1), located at the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets (GHPO) for convenient access.

Schneider Electric_EVlink Smart Wallbox_Awana SkyCentral Transportation Hub_Resorts World Genting_Charging Station_MalaysiaThe Schneider Electric EVlink Smart Wallbox is compliant with full electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) charging standards and has a rated charging power of 7.4 kW. It is future-proofed to be easily upgradeable to a more powerful 22 kW should the need arise. At 7.4 kW, it would take approximately one hour to charge a typical PHEV’s battery for a range of 40 km. The Smart Wallbox uses a Type 2 socket and you will have to bring your own charging cable.

Additionally, it has a built-in energy management feature for more efficient use of the energy infrastructure without significant increase in costs to the provider, such as Resorts World Genting.

Schneider Electric_Country President_Asri Ramayanti Dharmawan_Malaysia“We are thrilled to be partners with Resorts World Genting in their efforts to meet the demand for EV from its local and international holidaymakers at the resort,” said Ms Asri Ramayanti Dharmawan, Country President of Schneider Electric Malaysia. “At Schneider Electric, we believe that sustainability must be the endgame of any company in today’s world. It is at the core of our strategy and a great value that we deliver to our customers, shareholders and employees,” added Asri.

Resorts World Genting_Ganaesan Subramaniam_Vice President_Hotel Operations_Schneider Electric_EV Charging Station_Malaysia“Part of the idea of us having the Awana SkyCentral Transportation Hub Carpark that has nearly 5,000 parking bays is to encourage our customers to park and ride the cable car system to the peak or to park and shop at GHPO,” said Mr Ganaesan Subramaniam, Vice President of Hotel Operations at Resorts World Genting. Genting’s car park has an average of 50% occupancy rate on weekdays and up to 100% on weekends and holidays. Further, there is a large number of visitors who drive PHEVs and thus the company sees the value in setting up charging stations.

“We were fortunate to have met with Schneider Electric who is a pioneer in this field to set up our first EV charging system here. We are excited to be partnering with an established global specialis in energy management as Schneider Electric. Their charging solutions were awarded with the Green Premium ecolabel that guarantees compliance with the most up-to-date environmental regulations,” Ganaesan added.

The Porsche Taycan is expected to be launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show. But in the meantime, we got the international debut of another Porsche-branded electric vehicle i.e. the Porsche 99X Electric. The 99X Electric is Porsche’s works entry for the 2019/2020 season of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.

TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E_99XLike all Formula E cars, the 99X will have a maximum output of 250 kW (338 hp) from its electric motor and a 52 kWh battery pack. New regulations dictate that drivers now need to run the car in two different modes during the races i.e. ‘Normal’ mode (with power capped at 200 kW) and ‘Attack’ mode (capped at 235 kW).

“Today is an important day. With the premiere of the Porsche 99X Electric, we are taking a big step towards the Porsche works entry in Formula E. I am really proud of our team, which has shown a high level of commitment to the Formula E project. Now I am looking forward to seeing the Porsche 99X Electric on the racetrack,” said Fritz Enzinger, Vice President Porsche Motorsport and Group Motorsport Volkswagen AG.

Porsche 99X_TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E_Rear ViewThe TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team also welcomed another member from the Porsche family. Pascal Zurlinden, Director GT Factory Motorsport since 2018, will take on a key role in Formula E in addition to his role in GT works racing as Director Factory Motorsport. The Frenchman has been working for Porsche at the Weissach development centre since 2014, initially on the LMP1 project, and in the GT sector since 2017.

“I’m looking forward to also being part of the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team from now on and supporting my colleagues with my experience. The Formula E concept is very interesting and is different from traditional motorsport series, a new and exciting task that I am really looking forward to. Of course, it is also great to see so many familiar faces from my time in LMP1 and to be working with the team again,” says Pascal Zurlinden. “Today sees the Porsche 99X Electric join the list of historic Porsche motorsport cars. The naming and the design give the car its initial character and bring it to life. It is a special day for everyone who has put a lot of work into the Porsche Formula E project in recent months,” he added.

The development of the Porsche powertrain, the ‘Porsche E-Performance Powertrain’, has played a central role from the start. The Formula E regulations stipulate a standardised chassis and a standard battery, while the drive technologies are developed by the manufacturers. The engineers were able to make use of their LMP1 experience when developing the Porsche Formula E powertrain. With the hybrid technology, the foundations were laid for electric mobility.

“In hindsight, we laid the foundations for Porsche’s future involvement in Formula E during the LMP1 project. We used the insights gained during that time in the development of the Porsche Formula E powertrain. We focused on building a highly effective powertrain with the highest level of efficiency,” says Malte Huneke, Technical Project Leader Formula E.

Porsche 99X Electric_TAG Heuer Porsche Formula EThe 800-volt technology used in Formula E is also used in the series production of the fully electric Porsche sports car, the Taycan. In addition, energy management and efficiency are the keys to success in both Formula E and series production. This is where the permanent synchronous motor comes into play which has an important role in optimising the drive concept.

“In recent months, we have been able to sound out the reliability of the Porsche Formula E powertrain on the racetrack and on the test bench. We are very pleased and are optimistic going into the final preparations for the first race,” says Huneke. “In the coming weeks, we will focus on the performance of the Porsche 99X Electric. This is the next step on the road to the Porsche works entry in Formula E,” says Amiel Lindesay, who is from now on Head of Operations Formula E.

The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team will make its first official appearance in mid-October 2019 at the Formula E test in Valencia, Spain. “Both Porsche 99X Electric will take to the racetrack there for the first time, with Neel Jani and André Lotterer in the cockpit. From an operational perspective, it will be an exciting assignment for everyone involved. A good test before we contest our first Formula E race in November,” says Lindesay.

TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team_99X Electric_Top ViewIn terms of the design, the traditional Porsche motorsport colours were chosen for the Formula E racing car. From a bird’s-eye perspective, the Porsche emblem is clearly visible around the Halo system. As usual, the naming format is three digits which represent Porsche racing cars and two-door sports cars. The highest number, nine, was used twice, to re-emphasise the importance of the Formula E project for Porsche, while the X stands for the forward-looking approach and prototype racing. The Porsche 99X Electric also serves as a development platform for future fully electric production models.

TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team 2019-2020_Porsche 99XFormula E marks the return of Porsche to single-seater racing after more than 30 years away. Entering Formula E and the accompanying restructuring of the motorsport involvement can be derived from the 2025 Porsche strategy. In addition to traditional GT road-going sports cars, fully electric sports cars are also firmly anchored in the strategy. Both should be reflected in the Porsche world of motorsport in the future. A large part of the corporation’s ‘Mission E’ is also the presence and success in motorsport with race cars with electric drive. In terms of hybrid technology and thus e-drive technology, racing and production have been enriching each other at Porsche for around a decade: the first hybrid race car, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid of 2010, went into the development of the 918 Spyder. In part, the 918 was the basis for the 919 Hybrid, which in turn influenced the development of the Porsche Formula E powertrain and the Porsche Taycan.

More than 30 licensed drivers from Ford’s corporate partners recently took part in the Driving Skills For Life (DSFL) programme, which is part of Ford’s global safe driver training. This is part of the effort by Ford and its sole local distribution partner, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC), to promote safe driving behavior and road safety awareness in Malaysia.

The drivers who signed up for DSFL comprised mainly of employees of telecommunications and utilities companies. The half-day workshop was held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS).

Ford Driving Skills for Life_MAEPS 2019_Sime Darby Auto Connexion_Malaysia“Road safety is an important topic and we are proud to partner with Ford who has the know-how, to promote a safer driving behaviour among Malaysia motorists. Ford Driving Skills for Life Programme provides useful tools and resources to help driver understand many unpredictable scenarios that could happen on the road while equipping them with knowledge to tackle the situations accordingly,” said Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, Managing Director, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion.

Malaysia has one of the highest vehicle ownership rates in the region, as well as high traffic accident rates. This suggests that awareness of basic road safety is still lacking among Malaysian drivers. According to data from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), more than 43 percent of Malaysian drivers use their mobile phones while driving¹ and only less than 10% of rear passengers wear the seat belt².

The DSFL workshop was conducted free-of-charge and addressed various driver risks with training focused on four main areas:

  • Distractions – Making smart decisions behind the wheel to limit distractions and staying focused on the task of driving
  • Hazard recognition – How to scan for trouble when approaching intersections, and safety zones
  • Speed and space management – Learning how to adjust speed to maintain space around, ahead and behind a vehicle while avoiding being rear-ended
  • Vehicle’s handling – Understanding the vehicle’s capability and learning to better control the vehicle by leveraging on its safety features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning.

Ford Driving Skills for Life_MAEPS_Sime Darby Auto Connexion_Malaysia_2019The workshop was a mix of classroom and practical training sessions, and also featured the Ranger pick-up truck similarly used by these drivers on a daily basis, to relate and simulate close to real-life, hands-on driving experience.

An emphasis on the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or medication was also incorporated into the programme. This includes having participants wear specially designed goggles that help simulate the experience of driving while movement, coordination and alertness are impaired.

Ford Driving Skills for Life_MAEPS_Group Photo_2019_Sime Darby Auto Connexion_MalaysiaDSFL is Ford’s flagship global corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme funded by the Ford Motor Company Fund – the philanthropic arm of the Ford Motor Company.

Globally, the Ford DSFL programme is active in 35 countries and is now in its 16th successful year of training licensed drivers of all ages. To-date, the program has trained more than 1,000 individuals in safe driving practices in Malaysia.

“We are starting to see our efforts bear fruit. The extremely positive performance we have seen this year has come from a combination of the right product mix, good cost control, improved quality and the new network strategy. This has propelled us take the number 2 spot in terms of car sales for Malaysia. However, this is merely the beginning as there is much more to do and we are committed to ensuring that the brand will continue on this upward trajectory”, said Radzaif.
