Isuzu_D-Max 1.9 Blue Power_Pick-up Truck_Malaysia_2019Isuzu Malaysia has launched the updated D-Max pick-up truck with a new 1.9L Blue Power diesel engine. This new engine is designed to meet future requirements for reduced fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions and makes the Isuzu D-Max the first pick-up truck in the country to be certified as an EEV (Energy Efficient Vehicle).

Founded in 1916, Isuzu Motors is one of the oldest automotive manufacturers in Japan (the Isuzu nameplate saw its first use in 1934) and has produced some 25 million engines. Developed internally over four years by Isuzu Motors in Japan, the 1,898 cc RZ4E-TC engine surpasses all its design parameters, despite its smaller displacement, by increasing engine performance, durability and better economy, lower NVH, lower friction and operating cost. The engine boasts technical breakthroughs that have resulted in a higher engine output of 150 PS @ 3,600rpm (up by 10%) and 350 Nm of torque (up by 9%) between 1,800 and 2,600 rpm over the 2.5L 4JK1-TCX engine that it replaces.

Isuzu D-Max 1.9 Blue Power_Engine_BenefitsSome of the engine’s efficiency and durability comes from the use of pistons with a tough graphite coating, diamond-like-carbon coated fuel injector needles, optimised combustion chambers as well as high performance steel timing chain. While the engine output has increased, there has been no sacrifice to Isuzu’s legendary fuel economy or dependability. Tests conducted in Thailand show a 19% improvement in fuel economy while a reduction in internal friction by 37%, suggesting that there will be less wear on engine components as well, thereby increasing the life expectancy of the engine. The engine is also 20% lighter (56 kg) and is less noisy (6% lower decibels in the cabin).

The engine is paired with a a new transmission system, with six forward cogs for both the manual and automatic gearboxes, to offer a performance level that is superior to the 2.5L that it replaces. As a result, the new Isuzu D-Max provides improved acceleration and overtaking while offering relaxed cruising from its two overdrive top gears.

Isuzu Malaysia_D-Max Blue Power 1.9_Launch_Dashboard_Steering WheelComing standard is Hill Descent Control (HDC) for easier descent of steep or slippery slopes, Hill Start Assist (HSA). Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Traction Control System (TCS). Further, Vehicle Launch Assist Control will increase initial torque on gradients of 25% or more to allow the vehicle to be quicker off the mark without suffering the effects of turbo lag when accelerating from idle.

Koji Nakamura_CEO_Isuzu Malaysia“Pick-up truck users place a high demand on their vehicles to help them get the job done. They require trucks that are intrinsically capable, operating with minimum fuss or cost. In this respect, the new Isuzu D-Max offers excellent value from its enhanced performance, lower fuel consumption, lower operating costs and with the road tax structure in many parts of Malaysia, lower road tax too,” said CEO of Isuzu Malaysia Mr Koji Nakamura.

Isuzu D-Max_Blue Power_4x2_MalaysiaIsuzu Malaysia is offering the D-Max with 11 variants for every budget range (from RM86k to RM121k) and usage requirement. In particular, the brand has focused part of its range on the business segment, starting with the new entry – the 1.9L low ride 4×2 manual that is directly aimed at serving the business community. This is followed by the single cab models that come with 1.9L and 3.0L engines, both with 4×4 drivetrain. Then come the double cab versions available in manual or auto in Basic (Type B) and Premium trim. Joining this line-up is the new 4×2 auto version aimed at the urban user who does not require the 4×4 function. Topping the line-up are the 4×4 Auto Premium variants both with the 1.9L and 3.0L engines. Isuzu will continue to offer the 3.0L variants due to market demand.

Isuzu D-Max_1.9 DDI Blue Power_Front Bumper_Grille_Bi-LED_DRLOn the exterior, the front grille design has been changed to one with a blend of black and chrome. The Premium variants get a bumper redesigned with new fog lamp garnish. Also for the Premiums are a new headlight cluster with bi-LED projector headlamps and LED DRL. The headlight throw can be manually adjusted by the driver according to the vehicle load to avoid glare to oncoming vehicles. The new Isuzu D-Max comes with a new 18″ alloy rim design for a sportier look and aids in sharper handling.

Isuzu D-Max_Blue Power_Leather Fabric Rear Seats_MalaysiaTo complement the 6% reduction in engine noise of the new 1.9-litre engine over the 2.5L version, Isuzu engineers has made the interior of the new D-Max plusher with the addition of soft-feel materials on major panels. Not only do these help absorb sound to make the interior quieter, but when matched to the dark interior trim and the new-design leather-fabric combination seats, the new Isuzu D-Max’s interior takes on a more inviting and comfortable outlook.

A high-speed USB charging port sits ahead of the gear selector and the Isuzu D-Max now comes with a secondary USB port situated behind the centre compartment for rear passengers to use.

Isuzu D-Max_Flat Bed_Tailgate_MalaysiaIsuzu has also developed a soft-touch tailgate that is available as an option, to aid loading. The mechanism uses a novel strut to control the opening speed of the tailgate while a torsion bar makes lifting possible using just one finger. Also available is a pull-out loading tray for added storage convenience.

The new Isuzu D-Max is available in Magnum White, Silky White Pearl, Titan Silver, Stallion Black, Red Spinel and Sapphire Blue (certain colours are only available for selected variants).

Buyers of the new Isuzu D-Max during the promotional period which ends on 31 October 2019 will enjoy a special 5-year unlimited mileage warranty and a free maintenance package for the next eight years (terms and conditions apply).

To celebrate this launch, Isuzu Malaysia is conducting a nationwide test drive campaign at all its dealerships where a mystery gift awaits all who test drive the new 1.9L Blue Power Isuzu D-Max between September 21 and October 31 2019. Prospects will also receive a ticket that entitles them to be in the running for a Blue Fever lucky draw at the end of the promotional period.

Proton 1 Tank Adventure_Participants_First Leg_2019_MalaysiaBack for the second time, the Proton 1 Tank Adventure kicked off last week with the opening preliminary round taking place over the Malaysia Day weekend. The first round involved a total of 60 participants in 30 cars, comprising of the 2019 editions of Proton Iriz, Persona and Saga. The group set off on this weekend adventure to cover a total driving distance of 650 km (more for those who got lost, missed turns or decided to do pitstops), starting from Proton’s Centre Of Excellence (COE) in Subang Jaya to Permas Jaya in Johor Bahru and back again, eventually ending up at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) and finally Setia Gemilang in Sungai Buloh, Proton’s first 4S centre.

Muar Second Bridge_Muar Bypass_Johor_MalaysiaBut it was not such a straightforward drive. In between Subang Jaya and Johor Bahru, all the participating cars had to make stops at Melaka to feast on local fruits before heading off to Perigi Batu Pahat and then Tanjung Piai National Park, the southernmost point of mainland Eurasia. The convoy stopped for the night in Johor Bahru before continuing the journey up the North-South highway to Setia Gemilang; a fuel stop at the Ayer Keroh R&R was a necessity to continue this journey.

Proton Persona_2019 1 Tank Adventure_MalaysiaIf you have not heard of the 1 Tank Adventure, it is Proton’s initiative to showcase its newest models in a real world setting as well as to engage with its customers. Driving on Day 1 was not made any easier with heavy traffic courtesy of the long weekend, the haze, and a spot of wet weather. It was made more challenging with missed turns due to stuttering navigation app or confusing road signs as well as a large number of trucks and buses. Therefore, the driving conditions were less than perfect for impressive fuel economy numbers, especially when everyone had to reach the checkpoints within a stipulated time (this makes it difficult to hypermile). But most participants somehow were able to eke out extra metres from that one tank of petrol. Not all made it to the refuelling stop though, with one car running out of breath a mere 500 metres from the Petronas station at Ayer Keroh and a few were stranded a few kilometres away.

Proton Saga_Driving_MalaysiaThe fact that the participants managed to complete the roughly 650 km fuel economy challenge portion of the event is a testament to the fuel efficiency of Proton’s current range of cars. The best theoretical maximum range achieved, based on the 40-litre fuel tank size of the cars used, was 809 km. This is an impressive result despite having had to keep to a high minimum average speed for safety reasons despite the challenging conditions faced.

The best results achieved, verified by scrutineers from the Malaysia Speed Festival (MSF), are 4.98L/100km for the Proton Saga, 5.43L/100km for the Proton Persona, and an event-best 4.94L/100km for the Proton Iriz. This year, I was in a Proton Saga (it was a Persona last year) with a lighter driving partner and we managed approximately 5.6L/100km; that is roughly 17.9km/L.

Proton Saga_Meter Cluster_Multi-info DisplayA good portion of the drive was on trunk roads and we typically cruised (when possible) at between 70 km/h – 90 km/h, using the Eco Guide indicator light in the meter cluster, as well as the real-time fuel consumption  reading in the multi-info display as reference.

Though its main goal is to showcase the real-world fuel efficiency of Proton cars, the 1 Tank Adventure is also an opportunity to demonstrate other selling points that play a prominent role across all of these three models. One easily missed feature is the ride and handling balance as well as the safety equipment engineered into the cars.

Proton Iriz 2019_Facelift_Test Drive_Slalom_MalaysiaAll participants expected their cars to be able to finish the fuel efficiency challenge, but only few were aware of the dynamic abilities of their own cars. The Proton owners on this drive, in particular, (as well as some local personalities) were given a chance to do extreme manouevres with demo cars in a closed environment at MAEPS. It is probably true that none of the participants had performed such dynamic driving with their cars.

“I was amazed by the fuel efficiency of our car but I am also truly surprised by the handling capabilities and amount of safety equipment available in a Proton car,” said Rohayudin bin Ya’acob, who was taking part with his son Mohammad Kamarul Eizlan in the latter’s Proton Persona.

“If possible, I would recommend all Proton car owners to grab the opportunity to really test out their cars to the limit because only by doing so can they appreciate the big difference between the ride and handling of a Proton and its competitors. I was also surprised by what Electronic Stability Control (ESC) can do to keep a car safe so Proton has done a great job to ensure a car like the Proton Saga Premium, priced below RM40,000, also gets this important safety feature,” added Rohayudin.

Dynamic driving experience with Proton PersonaWhile this exercise may be seen as a bit of chest-thumping to some, we need to bear in mind that most people buy a car to use as a point-A-to-point-B transport and as such would not experience or subject the car to such spirited manouevres. That is, until one is faced with an emergency avoidance situation on the road, in which case the driver will typically panic and possibly lose control. By knowing the capabilities and limits of your car, you can build up more confidence and preparedness should you ever need to for example, avoid a a collision.

Commenting on the successful completion of the first leg of Proton 1 Tank Adventure, Dr. Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton said, “The opening round of this year’s 1 Tank Adventure was very challenging but everyone completed the course safely. More importantly, we gave the participants an opportunity to test their cars in driving conditions that would allow them to experience the safety equipment and dynamic abilities of their cars, proving that our cars offer the best value and driving experience among all vehicles in their class.”

There is no denying that many are not used to driving in this manner but for these Proton owners, it is a useful way for them to experience the extremes their car is capable of, and that it may one day help them out of a dicey situation. Many years ago, I drove my Proton Iswara in the dead of night in a remote area with the optimistic mindset that I could reach the next petrol station to fill up before it closed and continue my journey. The next petrol station was in a very small town, and it was naturally closed at that time of night. Thankfully I made it to my destination despite running on fumes. Unlike in the 1 Tank Adventure, at that time I did not have a Sweeper car that was carrying extra petrol all ready to help me.

2019 NEW MAZDA6_Rear ViewThe 2019 Mazda6 is updated with the latest G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) feature for enhanced driving dynamics as well as better comfort.

The original G-Vectoring Control technology was first available in the SKYACTIV-Vehicle Dynamics series. GVC was the world’s first control system to vary engine torque in response to steering inputs in order to provide integrated control of lateral and longitudinal acceleration forces and optimize the vertical load on each wheel for smooth and efficient vehicle motion.

Mazda_G-Vectoring Control PlusThe latest version of this software, called G-Vectoring Control Plus, uses the brakes to add direct yaw moment control for further enhanced handling stability. As the driver steers out of a corner by returning the steering wheel to the center position, GVC Plus applies a light braking force to the outer wheels to provide a stabilizing moment that helps restore the vehicle to straight line running. The system realizes consistently smooth transitions between yaw, roll and pitch even under high cornering forces, improving the vehicle’s ability to accurately track sudden steering inputs and crisply exit corners. In addition to improving handling in emergency collision avoidance manoeuvres, GVC Plus offers a reassuring feeling of control when changing lanes on the highway and when driving on slippery road surfaces.

Mazda Connect Infotainment with Apple CarPlay & Android AutoIn terms of convenience, the 2019 Mazda6 now also has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard. This is accessible via the MAZDA CONNECT infotainment display for drivers to hook up their Apple or Android smart devices to the car’s system and access their favourite apps such as Spotify, Waze, Google Maps, etc.

The connection between human and car has long been at the core of Mazda’s way of building cars. This Jinba Ittai development philosophy allows for driving joy in all kinds of driving situations. Watch the video below for Mr Takao Kijima’s explanation of this connection.

2019 MAZDA6_Dashboard_Steering WheelThe Mazda6 is available in Malaysia as a fully imported unit from Japan. The new Honda Civic 2019 will be launched pretty soon, and is open for booking at all Honda Showrooms. This is the minor change model for the 10th Generation Honda Civic, and it comes with some interesting updates.DSC_2393

Since its launch in 2016, more than 50,000 units have been sold, and the Civic is claimed to have captured 82 percent of the C-Segment market share in Malaysia as of July 2019.

Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Toichi Ishiyama said, “Over the years, the Civic continues to hold the leadership position in the C-segment. It has sold more than 133,000 units in Malaysia since its first introduction in 2001 and celebrated a historical milestone with the delivery of the 130,000th Civic in early May this year. We are confident that the New Civic will not only continue to live up to its name, but also offer D-segment features with a sportier appearance and dynamic performance. The New Civic is the third Completely Knock-Down (CKD) model from Honda Malaysia to be introduced with Honda SENSING – the Next Generation Advanced Safety Technology – which offers a complete package that we believe will be attractive to customers in Malaysia.”DSC_2357

According to a release by Honda Malaysia, it seems that the 1.8 litre version has been discontinued, as it only mentions the 1.5 litre VTEC Turbo engine, which delivers 173PS of power and maximum torque of 220Nm. This engine is mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

Further strengthening the value of the New Civic as the Game Changer, this model now comes with FULL Honda SENSING, the Next Generation Advanced Safety Technology which provides comfort, convenience and most importantly safety.
