Proton 1 Tank Adventure_2019_Sabah_Malaysia_IrizThe weekend before last, the Proton 1 Tank Adventure covered Sabah for its second leg, taking participants on a scenic 525 km journey from Kota Kinabalu to the northernmost tip of Borneo island in Kudat, the town of Kundasang at the foot of Mount Kinabalu, before taking them back to the state capital. While the route allowed the participants to enjoy some truly scenic landscapes, it also delivered a strong message to its owners and media alike, about the performance of the Proton Iriz, Persona and Saga used in the 1 Tank Adventure.

This year’s 1 Tank Adventure was more challenging because of the longer distance covered; last year’s route was only 420 km. Despite the longer route, tougher driving conditions and the need to maintain a high average speed, all three models still managed to deliver impressive results while winning unanimous praise from the participants for the handling, comfort and safety features.

Proton 1 Tank Adventure_Sabah_2019_MalaysiaThe drive began in the state capital of Kota Kinabalu which is also port city. However, the roads leading in and out of it traverse over Mount Kinabalu’s terrain. Thus, any route that leads inland and away from the coast will invariably encounter steep terrain as the Crocker Range stands as a natural barrier for roads to go over.

The planned route for Sabah’s leg of the 1 Tank Adventure reflected this limitation while also throwing in another geographical feature – the northernmost point of Borneo. Combined, it set the stage for the toughest real world test yet faced by the participants.

Proton 1 Tank Adventure_Group photo_PROTON Harapan Maju_SabahThe convoy flagged off from Proton Harapan Maju in Kota Kinabalu, fresh off the 3S centre’s official opening, and returned to Proton Shirba Auto, also in Kota Kinabalu at the end of the journey. All participants successfully completed the 525 km course which is an impressive achievement given that the layout of the roads and heavy traffic encountered along the way challenged the driving skill of every participant.

Unsurprisingly, the results achieved were not as impressive as those posted in the first leg but there were still some noteworthy record-setting performances. Once again, the results were verified by scrutineers from the Malaysia Speed Festival (MSF), and the best ones recorded were: 6.06L/100km for the Proton Iriz, an event-best 5.75L/100km for the Proton Saga and a record-breaking 5.81L/100km for the Proton Persona (last year’s record of 5.85L/100km).

Proton 1 Tank Adventure_Fuel Station_Sabah_MalaysiaThe best theoretical maximum range achieved, based on the 40-litre fuel tank size of the cars used, was 601 km. It is not anywhere near the best theoretical range of the first leg run in West Malaysia (809 km) but it was nonetheless impressive given the mountainous terrain, narrow roads with traffic as well as the need to adhere to a higher minimum average speed to reach checkpoints in time.

Like the first leg, the 1 Tank Adventure participants also got the opportunity to experience of the selling points of Proton cars. Subsequent to the dynamic driving exercise, both media (not exclusive to automotive media only) and public participants praised the secure handling of the Proton models they drove, with many mentioning the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) of the Iriz, Persona and Saga as notable features.

Proton 1 Tank Adventure_Sabah_Queennera Francine Francis Kitingan_MalaysiaQueennera Francine Francis Kitingan, who is a celebrity radio DJ from Kupi FM, owns a Proton Saga FLX and was amazed by the fuel efficiency, style, stability and features of the new Proton Iriz she drove during the event. “I love my Proton Saga as it is easy to drive and park and has been very reliable, but having tested the new Proton Iriz over the last two days, I think I may have a new favourite Proton model. I really like the way it looks and drives because it feels secure yet fun. I also love the intelligent infotainment system as there are so many songs for me to choose from while the fuel economy is truly surprising. I would not hesitate to recommend this car to anyone as I think it’s very impressive,” she said.

Commenting on the successful completion of the second leg of Proton 1 Tank Adventure, Dr. Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton said, “The Sabah leg of this year’s 1 Tank Adventure was very challenging but we were confident of everyone completing the course safely. The participants also had an opportunity to test their cars in driving conditions that would allow them to experience the safety equipment and dynamic abilities of their cars, which proved that our cars offer the best value and driving experience among all vehicles in their class.”

Mazda CX-30

The first mass-production battery electric vehicle by Mazda Motor Corporation is expected to make its debut at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show (23 October – 4 November).

This battery electric vehicle will be a completely new model, and will be the third installment in the Japanese automaker’s new-generation range. Mazda has been running test mules based on the CX-30 so very likely this all-new model will have a crossover style body. Mazda had also been testing a range extender EV featuring a small rotary engine, but seeing that the news is for a battery EV, the range extender could be saved for a later reveal.

Mazda_Logo_BadgeAs for the platform, Mazda has not been known to have a dedicated EV platform so it is likely that it will use its latest SkyActiv platform, which is used by the new Mazda3. Rest assured, the EV will also bear Mazda’s human-centric philosophy (Jinba Ittai) and make full use of the benefits of electric drive technology.

Other Mazda models slated for display at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show are the Mazda MX-5 roadster, Mazda3 Mazda CX-30, Mazda CX-5 and Mazda CX-8.

Toyota Supra_GR Supra_A90_2019Call it what you want, but there is no denying that the Toyota Supra is legendary. And after laying low for nearly two decades (production of the fourth generation stopped in 2002), the iconic sports car is back. This time, it comes with the ‘GR’ branding which represents Gazoo Racing – Toyota’s push for a more motorsports-centric halo range.

Toyota Gazoo Racing is the umbrella organisation for Toyota’s global motorsports programme, involving itself in various endurance races and rallys. Gazoo Racing has thus far won the Le Mans 24 Hours FIA World Endurance Championship, the 2019 Dakar Rally, as well as the Manufacturer’s Championship of the FIA World Rally Championship.

GR Supra_Launch_UMW Toyota_Akio Takeyama_Tengku Djan_Shawn Lee_MalaysiaWith the launch of the all-new A90 Toyota GR Supra in Malaysia, UMW Toyota Motor aims to further utilise the Gazoo Racing success in motorsports to help brand and develop a model range that leans on the sportier side, in addition to its regular range of vehicles, to appeal to a different set of customers.

Toyota GR Supra_A90_Gear Lever_Touch Pad Remote Controller_Centre Console_2019The GR Supra is the first GR model to be developed and produced by Toyota Gazoo Racing for the global market. The Malaysia variant is the Supra GTS which is fitted with a 3.0L 6-cylinder engine with twin-scroll turbocharger. This engine is paired to a quick-shifting 8-speed electronic automatic transmission and is good for sending 340 PS and 500 Nm of torque to the rear wheels (wheels are mixed size 19″). Using the launch control, you can take the GR Supra from zero to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.

Toyota Supra A90_Headlights_GR_Gazoo Racing_2019The GR Supra is equipped with Adaptive Variable Suspension, Electronically Controlled Limited Slip Differential (LSD), driving modes, head-up display, sports seats with lumbar support, dual zone climate control, keyless entry and start, adaptive LED headlights, LED tail lights, 8.8″ touchscreen display with touch pad remote controller, voice recognition, and a 12-speaker JBL audio system.

The GR Supra comes with Toyota Supra Safety which includes Forward Collision Warning with braking function, Lane Departure Warning with steering assist, Adaptive Cruise Control at all speeds, Adaptive High Beam System, Rear End Collision Warning and Speed Limit Info. Other key safety features include Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill-start Assist Control, Blind Spot Monitor, front and rear parking sensors, reverse camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, Emergency Stop Signal and ISOFIX anchor.

Toyota A90 Supra_GR_Gazoo Racing_Front Wheel_Brake Caliper_Headlight_Bumper_2019In a brief test drive of the GR Supra at the former Sungai Besi air base runway, we got a taste of the Supra’s acceleration potential as well as its 50:50 weight distribution. The level of front-end grip available as well as the predictable nature of the car’s lean into a turn inspires a lot of driving confidence. Top speed is rated at 250 km/h, but running on just section of the runway, I only managed to hit 210 km/h with no drama. It is no secret that the Supra is a joint development with BMW and it is a financially sensible move that has paid off. Despite using BMW hardware, Toyota has tuned the Supra to differentiate it from its continental step-sibling, the Z4.

UMW Toyota Motor_Deputy Chairman_Chief Motorsports Officer_Akio Takeyama_Malaysia“This time, as never before in the past, so much attention has been paid to its handling capabilities. Our President demanded nothing less than the highest performance and the considerable engineering resources and experience of the company were all drawn upon to develop the all-new GR Supra. This is a sports car in its purest form, with no compromise,” said Mr. Akio Takeyama, UMWT’s Chief Motorsports Officer and Deputy Chairman.

The GR Supra is priced from RM568,000. Colour choices are Prominence Red, Lightning Yellow, White Metallic, Deep Blue Metallic, Silver Metallic, Matte Storm Grey Metallic, Black Metallic and Ice Grey Metallic.

GR Garage_Gazoo Racing_UMW Toyota Motor_MalaysiaBesides the GR Supra, UMWT also unveiled the GR Garage. This is a shop-in-shop concept available at selected authorised dealerships to sell GR high performance products and merchandise. There are currently five GR Garage outlets i.e. three in the Klang Valley, and one each in the northern and southern regions. Malaysia is the first market outside of Japan to offer the GR Garage.

“The TGR Festival, Vios Challenge and Toyota Velocity Esports Championship have shown how Toyota is injecting more passion into its motorsports activities,” said Mr Takeyama. “However, we find that this is not enough to cater for car enthusiasts and motorsports fans’ needs in Malaysia. So we have come up with a new platform – the GR Garage, a place where they can gather and talk about their passion of cars… especially sports cars and motorsports,” he added.

More information about the A90 GR Supra and GR Garage locations can be found in toyota.com.my/vehicles/gr-lineup/supra.

Perodua Axia_2019_Rear ViewTo break it down, the base Axia E (only available in MT) costs RM24,090; Axia G, RM33,490; Axia GXtra, RM34,990; Axia STYLE, RM38,890; Axia SE, RM38,890; and Axia AV, RM43,190. Perodua Axia_AV_ASA_Push Start Button_2019The range-topping AV variant is now equipped with the Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) version 2.0. This system uses stereo cameras to enable driving assistance features such as Pedestrian Detection (effective up to 50 km/h), Pre-Collision Warning (up to 100 km/h), Pre-Collision Braking (up to 80 km/h), Front Departure Alert, and Pedal Misoperation Control. These features help to mitigate and reduce the impact of collisions so it does not mean that collisions won’t happen (it is still up to the driver to operate the vehicle responsibly).

From the GXtra and up, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control are available. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) are found in every variant except the base E. However, ISOFIX anchor points are standard across all variants. Additionally, the SE and AV also come with solar and security window film.

Perodua Axia_STYLE_Front_2019New to the Axia is the STYLE variant, which is primarily a dressed-up Axia. It features rugged looking front and rear bumpers with skid plates, body cladding, roof moulding, rear spoiler, and tail lights in clear lens. It is also fitted with larger 15″ five spoke alloy wheels and comes with a variant-exclusive Sunrise Orange body colour.

Perodua Axia STYLE_Dashboard_Steering Wheel_2019On the inside, there are some differences in the trim, and other than the addition of a push-start button, it is very similar to the GXtra.

“The new Perodua Axia STYLE embodies the desire to be different, to unleash the fun and active side that exists in all of us. It is upbeat and trendy, and at the same time retains all the hallmark Axia qualities of practicality, spaciousness, clever design and ease to drive,” said Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad, Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer.

Perodua Axia AV_Dashboard_2019According to Dato’ Zainal, Perodua has thus far received over 5,000 bookings for the 2019 Perodua Axia since it started taking orders on 22 August. “For over a quarter of a century, Perodua has mobilised Malaysia with quality compact vehicles that offer practicality, dependability, ease to drive and low overall ownership costs. For these reasons and more, the Perodua Kancil and Viva were popular choices for an entire generation of Malaysians buying their first car,” commented Dato’ Zainal.

“The 2019 Perodua Axia carries on that spirit while offering Malaysians much more in an entry-level vehicle than ever thought possible. It offers major advances in safety and style never seen before in this segment and yet retains its affordability,” he added.

The Axia has a rated fuel efficiency of 22.5 km/l (manual), 21.6 km/l (auto) and 20.8 km/l (STYLE, due to the larger wheels and additional weight).

Body colour choices for the Axia are: Ivory White (also the only colour for E variant), Glittering Silver, Midnight Blue, Lava Red (only for GXtra, SE & AV), and finally Sunrise Orange (STYLE only).
