Scania G410_G Series_Prime Mover_Truck_MalaysiaThe New Truck Generation by Scania was launched in April 2019, highlighting the brand’s comprehensive features and services for profit maximisation and its focus on sustainable transport solutions while improving profitability for owners. As part of the company’s continuous effort to build awareness and educate truck owners and drivers alike of the features and services available, Scania (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd held a week-long New Truck Generation Test and Drive event at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS).

Over the course of the week, Scania hosted about 300 invited customers, guests, fans as well as members of the media to experience driving Scania’s New Truck Generation in a safe and controlled environment.

Scania Fleet Care_Cost Revenue Simulation_MalaysiaBefore experiencing the new Scania truck, guests were briefed on the technology as well as complementary services that will aid owners in maximising revenue and profit while minimising vehicle downtime. This includes the Scania Fleet Care which helps with managing and optimising vehicle & driver performance as well as maintenance. The new generation Scania Euro 3 diesel engines have already been improved to reduce fuel consumption by 3% and further optimisation of driver performance, maintenance schedules and adminstrative functions can improve profits by up to 9%. This may not seem like a lot for one truck but in a fleet of 10, 20 or more trucks, and over time, the numbers add up.

Scania_Fleet Management Portal_MalaysiaFurther, with the Scania Fleet Managment portal, owners can monitor vehicle and driver performance to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses in their fleet, and make the necessary remedies. The portal also allows Scania or the fleet owner to track the vehicles in real time as well as signal for vehicle / parts faults and maintenance scheduling. Monitoring a vehicle’s performance (fuel, NOx, CO, CO2, etc) can help a fleet owner plan the vehicle’s repair and maintenance in advance which will result in optimum uptime, and that means an increase of revenue per vehicle.

Besides these, Scania has also made available the options of rollover side curtain airbags for driver safety (a first in Malaysia) as well as a battery-operated cabin cooler that allows for the engine to be shut down thus saving on fuel and emissions when the driver queues at checkpoints or ports.

Scania_New Truck Generation_G410_G Series_Prime Mover_MalaysiaAt the event, guests had a chance to try out the Scania G410A6X2 prime mover on specific routes in MAEPS, pulling either an unloaded container or tipper. Safety-wise, the Scania New Truck Generation is engineered in collaboration with Scania’s sister company, Porsche Engineering, and has a more robust monocoque structure with high tensile steel. The front axle has been moved 50 mm to the front and tractor unit has a lower centre of gravity, allowing for a shorter overhang that reduces the degree of kneeling when under braking. Together with the 30″ brake chambers for the front disc brakes, the truck’s active safety features improve braking distance by 5%, from 40 metres to 38 metres for a truck with a 40-tonne gross trailer weight.

Scania_G Series_New Truck Generation_Cabin_Steering Wheel_InteriorDrivers also benefit from better driving visibility and ergonomics due to the repositioning of the seat, a lower dashboard and instrument panel as well as optimised positioning of the A-pillars. The steering column is also designed to absorb impact to reduce injury. Since the cab is essentially the truck driver’s office, there is a good amount of higher quality material and finishes used, which improves comfort and reduces stress. Further, for long distance driving comfort and convenience, there are a variety of seat adjustment options as well as storage inside and outside. There is also a new infotainment system that features a 7″ touchscreen; camera sensors and other warning systems are also available as additional safety options. Some may see these features as unnecessary but bear in mind that truck drivers occasionally travel hundreds of kilometres carrying goods worth several hundreds of thousand or several million Ringgit.

“The features of the New Truck Generation have improved greatly from the older generation as many things have been simplified making the truck more user friendly, very comfortable and most importantly the clear visibility from the different angles. The truck itself is more enhanced and very powerful. Safety feature such as the improved response from the braking system is also a plus point for Scania’s New Truck Generation,” said Alex Lai of Mansang Logistics Sdn Bhd.

From the driver’s perspective, enhancements have been made to provide an enriched driver’s environment as noted by Mohamad Hasni from Yeap Transport and Trading Company. “The cabin is one of a kind. Adjustable seat that is close to the door, ergonomic dashboard with touchscreen, and large windscreen with extended view make it easier for the driver to operate in a comfortable and safe environment. Scania has truly designed a truck that is focused on the customers and the drivers needs,” he explained.

Scania Southeast Asia Managing Director_Marie Sjödin Enström_Scania MalaysiaThe New Truck Generation by Scania is the result of 10 years of development and SEK 20 billion (MYR 10 billion) worth of investment with over 12 million kilometres of test-driving. “I am very grateful for all the guests who took the time to test & drive the New Truck Generation from Scania. I am even more inspired by the feedback that I have gotten from them. Our guests definitely saw the features that we can offer, felt the performance of the truck and also believe that this truck can help lower operating cost, increase revenue and profitability for their businesses,” said .

“As a business, Scania has been at the forefront of providing sustainable transport solutions to our customers. Our New Truck Generation will serve as the vehicle to carry the momentum of economic progress with reduced carbon footprint as we work towards our new 2050 commitment of achieving net-zero emissions,” Marie added.

As truck makers continue to improve its products to make them safer, more user-friendly and more eco-friendly, it is also time for laws and regulations to be updated and revised based on at least current technologies and business situations.

Scania_Mekar Angkut Sdn Bhd (Konsortium E-Mutiara group of companies) Scania G360A4X2NA New Truck handover_MalaysiaThe New Truck Generation Test and Drive 2019 event also saw a handover ceremony for two Scania customers i.e. Mekar Angkut Sdn Bhd and Tasik Bintang Transport and Trading Sdn Bhd. Mekar Angkut, which is part of the Konsortium E-Mutiara group of companies, decided to purchase 5 units of G360A4X2NA Scania New Truck Generation as their first time purchase after being satisfied with the performance of Scania buses operating under Konsortium E-Mutiara.

On the other hand, Tasik Bintang is an existing Scania customer with 12 Scania trucks in their fleet. It purchased a total of 9 New Truck Generation from Scania due to its experience of the performance and reliability of Scania trucks.

Flux_Subscription Service_Cars_MalaysiaFlux is a new subscription service in Malaysia offering you the use of a car without the need for you to shell out a large sum of money or commit to a multiple year loan to buy one. Flux is an all-inclusive monthly car subscription service which offers all the benefits of having your dream car without the drawbacks. There is a range of cars from its garage for you to pick for your personal use. While it sounds similar to car sharing services, with Flux, you get to keep the car in your driveway or parking spot, which is almost like owning it.

This service also helps to reduce the hassle of trading in or selling your car once you are bored with the current one as you can opt to switch to another in the Flux stable. And you can switch back, or switch to another one, if you change your mind or requirements. Basically, you don’t need to have multiple cars in your driveway, just a Flux subscription will do.

Flux members just need to pay a monthly fee to drive a car of their choice without commitment. In essence, there is no downpayment, no debt, and no problems.

The ‘no problems’ bit is explained below.

How Flux Works

Flux_Cars_Subscription Service_MalaysiaFlux members can choose a car of their choice from www.driveflux.com and subscribe to a specific car in the website. Cars currently available range from the Toyota Yaris to Honda City to Kia Sportage to MINI Cooper to BMW 630 GT; either new or pre-owned. All its cars are independently inspected to determine that each and every one is maintained to the highest standards and free of major accidents and flood damage.

Once you have selected a car, you then choose a subscription plan which starts at month-to-month for total flexibility or up to three years for best value. Subscription plans indicate how long members intend to use the Flux service, and not a specific car as you have the privilege to switch to another throughout your subscription period. You can also choose a mileage package i.e. Lite, Standard and Unlimited which offers a monthly maximum of 1,250 km, 2,000 km and cap-less mileage respectively. The Lite package is offered at no additional charge.

Additionally, Flux offers a concierge service to help manage all your car-related administrative and maintenance matters. This includes yearly document renewals along with planning and execution of periodical service and repairs. This will free up your time, especially on weekends.

Moreover, Flux vehicles are fitted with a telematics device which ensures your safety and security. Should your car be involved in an accident, the telematics device will send for emergency services to your location so that medical attention is received as soon as possible. Flux has partnered with leading automotive insurers for comprehensive protection and 24/7 nationwide roadside assistance to ensure your safety and assist you in every step of the post-accident process. It can also aid in the recovery of the vehicle and your belongings in the case of theft.

Flux_BMW_Mercedes_Car Subscription Service_MalaysiaA key benefit of Flux is the freedom to switch cars after a minimum of one month of use with just a standard switching fee. Following a switch, you pay the monthly rate for the newly chosen car. Flux is the only service able to offer this level of flexibility at these prices, to give its members the the best value possible.

And just in case you have seconds thoughts on the vehicle you chose, Flux offers a 3-day Risk Free Return policy and will work with you to find a car that best meets your needs.

The Flux service is open to subscription by Malaysians and non-Malaysians, as long as you have a credit card issued in Malaysia, local mobile contact number and are above 25 years of age. International driving licence holders are also accepted.

Aziz Ayman_Flux_Founder_Malaysia“It’s unbelievable that in 2019, the only financially attractive way a Malaysian can have access to a car 24/7 all year round is through a hire purchase loan. Because buying a car, a highly depreciating asset, is probably the worst financial decision a household can make. From my time in Silicon Valley, I observed first hand how the tech industry was disrupting the mobility space. In essence, consumers are being empowered to make better decisions with less compromise,” said Aziz Ayman, Founder & CEO of Flux.

“I founded Flux to challenge the status quo and offer a better alternative to the conventional car loan, here at home in Malaysia. At Flux, we are excited to pioneer a new means to access all the benefits of having a car in your driveway, without the costs. We are proud to challenge the conventions of car ownership, working collaboratively with the leading local automotive groups. Together, we offer you freedom of choice, at unparalleled convenience. In short, Flux is the simpler way to ‘own’ your perfect car,” he added.

Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Sedan_MalaysiaMercedes-Benz Malaysia has launched the new Mercedes-AMG A 35 4Matic sedan in Malaysia to expand its current range of AMG models. With an estimated price of RM348,888, the A 35 is targeted at a younger crowd who are looking for driving performance but also want a fair amount of space in the car.

Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Sedan_2.0 Turbo EnginePutting the fun in this A 35 is a 2.0-litre turbo engine with 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque that transfers power to the Mercedes-AMG-specific 4Matic all-wheel drive system and out to the 19″ wheels, allowing it to accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. The crankcase is made of high-strength, lightweight die-cast aluminium to reduce vehicle weight for better driving dynamics.

The variable AMG Performance 4Matic combines the best possible traction with driving fun. The torque distribution is infinitely variable to suit the dynamic handling requirements. The spectrum ranges from front-wheel drive only to a 50:50 percent distribution to the front and rear axles.

Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Sedan'_ExteriorThe A 35 has a 2,729 mm wheelbase with the body sporting short front and rear overhangs which places the wheels nearer to each corner of the car.  Meanwhile, the interior of the A 35 provides rear headroom of 944 mm, as well as above-average shoulder, elbow room plus easy access . Further, the boot has a holding capacity of 420 litres and was designed for practical usability. The boot opening has a sizable width of 950 mm and a diagonal measurement of 462 mm between lock and lower edge of the rear window, allowing for comfortable loading and unloading.

Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Sedan_Rear Seats_Artico_DinamicaThe seats are wrapped in Artico faux leather with Dinamica microfibre in black with red contrasting top-stitching as well as red seat belts. Red piping on the Dinamica trim element and ventilation nozzles with a red ring add further accents. Another new feature is the distinctive AMG centre console with touchpad and additional switch for operating ESP and manual transmission mode.

The A 35 comes with AMG Dynamics which is a new feature in the AMG Dynamic Select drive programme.  This integrated dynamic handling control system extends the stabilising functions of ESP with agile interventions according to the driver’s wishes. During dynamic cornering, imperceptible braking intervention on the rear inside wheel creates a defined yawing moment about the vertical axis which results in a more precise handling car.

Helping add rigidity to the car is an aluminium shearing plate install under the engine to increase torsional rigidity and bending resistance in the front. Two additional diagonal braces at the front of the underbody also reduce torsion and increase the stiffness.

Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Sedan_Headlight_WheelThe AMG Ride Control suspension features an adaptive adjustable damping system, which allows you to switch between three different suspension configurations. The system operates automatically, adapting the damping forces for each wheel according to the driving situation and road conditions. This happens within milliseconds and is infinitely variable, with a wide spread of damping characteristics. The result is that ride comfort and agility are enhanced in equal measure.

Moving back inside, the MBUX multimedia system combines an intuitive operating structure with sporty design. MBUX creates and even closer connection between the vehicle, driver and passengers. Emotionally appealing presentations underline the clear control structure and it features brilliant maximum-resolution 3D graphics. Visually, the two displays under one shared glass cover blend into a widescreen cockpit and as a central element consequently emphasize the horizontal orientation of the interior design.

Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Sedan_AMG Grille“At Mercedes-Benz, we firmly believe in the AMG claim of Driving Performance. There is an undeniable intensity in our cars, having the most advanced and powerful hearts we produce. The Mercedes-AMG A 35 4Matic sedan is an expansion to the compact car family and the perfect entry into the world of AMG Driving Performance. With our new A 35, we are transporting the history of AMG into modern times,” said Dr Claus Weidner, President & CEO, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.
Michael Jopp, Vice President, Sales & Marketing Passenger Cars, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia added, “We are excited to introduce the new Mercedes-AMG A 35 4Matic sedan to the market. With superior power, exceptional driving dynamics with luxurious appointment and latest technological features, this new sedan is an ideal point of entry to the world of Mercedes-AMG with absolute peak performance.”

The A-Class range has tailored financing packages from Mercedes-Benz Financial that enables you to have a lower fixed monthly instalments over a set period of time, according to your needs.

For a limited time, all Plan A+ financing contracts come with two complimentary comprehensive service packages.

Mazda CX-5_2.5L SKYACTIV-G Turbo EngineWith the exception of the 2.2L variant which uses the SkyActiv-D turbocharged diesel engine, the others are driven by SkyActiv-G petrol powerplants. Also, as mentioned in an earlier article, the updated CX-5 line-up now includes a 2.5L SkyActiv-G turbocharged petrol variant which replaces a diesel one at the top of the range. Every variant uses the 6-speed SkyActiv Drive automatic transmission to place powers to either the front wheels or all wheels, depending on the variant.

To recap, the SkyActiv-G 2.0L naturally aspirated engine produces 162 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 213 Nm @ 4,000 rpm, while the SkyActiv-G 2.5L puts out 192 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 258 Nm @ 4,000 rpm, and the diesel-powered SkyActiv-D 2.2L has 173 hp @ 4,500 rpm and 420 Nm from 2,000 rpm. Meanwhile, the SkyActiv-G 2.5L Turbocharged engine produces 227 hp @ 5,000 rpm and 420 Nm from 2,000 rpm and uses a two-stage turbine to reduce lag and provide smooth, linear acceleration.

Mazda CX-5_2.5L SKYACTIV-G Turbo_DashboardFeatures you can find in the locally-assembled updated CX-5 include G-Vectoring Control Plus (a software control system which provides better steering stability and confidence), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, LED automatic headlamps with auto levelling, and i-ActivSense advanced safety features which include, but are not limited to, the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), and Smart City Brake Support (Front & Rear). Team Proton R3 Proton Iriz in the 2019 Malaysia Championship Series RaceSubang Jaya, 3 October 2019 – Team Proton R3 drivers Fariqe Hairuman and Syafiq Ali have successfully clinched the M-Production class championship in the 2019 Malaysia Championship Series (MCS). Driving the Proton Iriz, the duo had finished second in Round 5, which was a gruelling 300km race that offered double points to the racers who finish in the top 10.

For Fariqe, the 2019 title is his second MCS championship, having also won it in 2015 driving for R3. His co-driver Syafiq is a three-time Sepang 1000km (S1K) winner, and this is his first MCS title to add to the impressive list of racing accolades he has already won.

With the MCS championship under their belt, R3 have achieved one of their main goals for 2019 and can now focus on defending their S1K title to deliver PROTON a record-breaking fifth title in the race. Chances of retaining the S1K title is good as the team will be fielding cars with proven track records.

Team Proton R3 Proton Saga on Race Day in the 2019 Malaysia Championship SeriesBesides the Proton Iriz, R3 will race two 2019 Proton Saga cars. During Round 5 of MCS, the veteran driven pairing of Admi Shahrul and Faidzil Alang defended their title-chasing teammates from attacks by other cars but still managed to drive their Saga to a third place finish. It was the second podium for the Saga in the last three MCS races, which is a good sign for the team going into the S1K race.

Team Proton R3 Lady Racers Search Development ProgrammeThe second Proton Saga will be manned by drivers selected from the MSF-R3 Lady Racers Search. The initiative offers an opportunity to female racers to undergo a development programme with R3, culminating in a race seat in the 2019 S1K race.

The Racers for Team Proton R3 in the 2019 Malaysia Championship Series“R3 set out to win the MCS in 2019 and we won six consecutive races to go into Round 5 as championship leaders. Having racked up five wins, the Iriz was carrying 60kg of success ballast so our competitors had an advantage during the race. Still, we tried our best to overcome the weight penalty and win the race but in the end we finished with two podium places in second and third. The results worked out well for us though and thanks to the skill of our drivers and the handling and reliability of our cars we easily clinched the MCS championship,” said Gary Lee, Team Principal of Proton R3.

“The team is using the newest versions of the Iriz and Saga and both have proven to be very competitive, thanks to the excellent handling capabilities of road going versions of all PROTON cars. This provides R3 with a good base from which to build a racing machine and as the season has progressed our development programme has managed to deliver two cars with race winning potential,” he added.

The 2019 S1K race will carry a new element for R3 as one of its Proton Saga racing cars will use a special livery designed by the winner of the Design For Speed Contest. Run from 26 August to 22 September, the contest invited Malaysians to submit their most creative livery design and the best design will be applied to one of the R3 Proton Sagas in the race.

Team Proton R3 Proton Iriz“The Design For Speed contest was a very successful programme for PROTON as the contest page was viewed over 25,000 times. This led to the design template being downloaded over 3,000 times and from there, over 200 eligible entries were received. This shows Malaysians have a real passion for racing and for R3 so we are happy to be able to give them the opportunity to see their work applied to our racing car and then viewed by thousands of fans during the S1K race,” said Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer of PROTON.

Mazda CX-8_Mazda MalaysiaMazda Malaysia and Bermaz Auto recently celebrated the rollout of the locally assembled Mazda CX-8 SUV from the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah.  Just like the CX-5 which is also assembled in the same facility, the CX-8 is also slated for export to other ASEAN markets. Members of the media at the rollout ceremony were given the chance to drive and experience both the petrol and diesel versions of the CX-8 High variant.

In Japan, it is the CX-8 that is the brand’s flagship SUV as the CX-9 is not sold there. And the first impression of the vehicle is the premium quality of the design and trim used. Mazda’s KODO design language chooses to use subtle flowing lines and surfaces to mimic the graceful yet athletic elements of nature rather than rely on conspicuous creases and angles. As a result, the CX-8, like all current Mazda vehicles, have a smooth, elegant profile that keeps to its “Soul of Motion” fundamentals.

Mazda CX-8_Door_SillFor the interior, it looks like Mazda has made considerable efforts to create a comfortable human-centric environment even if some of these meticulous details are missed by many. One example is the extended door panel which covers the lower portion of the door sill. When the doors are closed, it keeps dirt and mud off the door sill and making sure you won’t accidentally rub dirt or mud on your trousers or legs. It also helps to further insulate the cabin from road noise.

Another feature of the door design is its ability to open up to 80° which makes it convenient for loading and unloading, or even for reaching in to adjust a child seat. The large door aperture also makes for easy access to the 3rd row.

Mazda CX-8_Third Row Seat_2019The three rows of seats are built on a tiered floor for more seating comfort. The rear passengers have sufficient space under the the seats in front to tuck their feet thus allowing for a more relaxed posture. The third row is designed to accommodate occupants up to 170 cm (5’6″) tall in relative comfort without sacrificing too much seat cushion thickness. The third row seats also features full-sized headrests which fold down when the seat is folded.

The seats are designed to ensure a natural posture by keeping the S-curve of the spine and maintaining an upright pelvis posture to help stabilise the body.

Mazda CX-8_Soul RedMazda has improved NVH (noise, vibration & harshness) of the cabin by using vibration-dampening material in the rear panels, reducing the gap between the roof moulding and roof spoiler, and sound-absorbing material. It also made use of high-damping urethane to reduce high frequency vibrations, while low frequency vibrations are suppressed by converting pitches and rolls into bounce. The result is a calm interior which reduces fatigue for its occupants and helps add to the premium feel the company wants to achieve.

Some engine noise is allowed into the cabin particularly for the driver to be aware of the speed. As a passenger, engine noise can be heard but it sounds muffled even when the engine is revved hard.

Furthermore, we noticed on our drive up north in the new CX-5 2.5 turbo that raindrops on the roof was hardly heard due to the insulated roof lining. The only place the sound of raindrops was apparent was on the windscreen but this is deliberate to allow the driver to perceive speed. We drove the CX-8 on a sunny day but we assume it also received the same noise insulating treatment as the CX-5. The triple-zone climate control of the CX-8 kept the three of us very comfortable.

Mazda CX-8_Ayous Wood Trim_2019Other tiny details include the use of wood from the Ayous tree for cabin trim to enhance the premium look (High variant). Mazda chose this wood as it is similar to the Paulownia which has a high resistance to deformation caused by humidity.

We had the SkyActiv-D 2.2L turbo diesel CX-8 High variant for a brief test run and managed to use some of the 188 hp and 450 Nm of torque on clear stretches of road. Acceleration was smooth and we were able to nearly keep pace with the lead car which was a SkyActiv-G 2.5L turbo petrol CX-5 with 227 hp and 420 Nm at least in the initial stages; the CX-8 weighs 1,924 kg.

Mazda CX-8_19 Inch Wheel_2019Mazda had tuned the CX-8’s suspension with lateral-force-cancelling coil springs and adapted rebound springs in the front dampers to enhance ride stability. The software-based GVC which controls the engine torque based on steering movement and acceleration, also helps to provide improved handling and ride quality to the vehicle occupants.

The first impression the CX-8 gives is of a well-engineered vehicle with premium feel and quality. Despite missing out on the Mazda Radar Cruise Control feature, it still comes with other i-ActivSense driving safety features. And unless you are in dire need of adaptive cruise control, I do not think it is a deal-breaker. There is no official price yet however (which seems to be an industry-wide issue), but I do not expect it to be priced below any of its current rival brands, which do not have anything with such trim and features on offer.

To see more of the driving experience of the CX-8 turbo diesel, watch the video below the gallery. (Note: engine noise in the video is apparent due to the placement of the voice recorder on the centre console; in reality, the cabin was quieter than that)

Mazda CX-8_MalaysiaAfter previewing it on several occasions since the beginning of the year, Bermaz Auto, which distributes Mazda vehicles in Malaysia, has officially announced the 2019 Mazda CX-8 for the Malaysia market and is now accepting bookings for this SUV. Like the brand’s smaller CX-5 SUV, the CX-8 is locally assembled by Mazda Malaysia at the Inokom facility in Kulim, Kedah.

The CX-8 offers three-row seating like the flagship CX-9, but for the CX-8 there is a choice of getting it in either 6- or 7-seater configuration. Though it looks similar to the CX-5 (they have the same width), the CX-8 is built on a modified CX-9 platform (same wheelbase) in order to practically fit three rows of seats and maintain ride quality. It is however 175 mm shorter and 129 mm narrower than the larger CX-9.

Mazda CX-8_2.2 Litre SkyActiv-D Turbo Diesel EngineThere are two engine choices i.e. SkyActiv-G 2.5L and SkyActiv-D 2.2L, in the form of four variants: 2.5L 2WD Mid, 2.5L 2WD Mid Plus, 2.5L High, and 2.2L AWD High. The SkyActiv-G 2.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine pushes out 192 hp and 258 Nm of torque, while the SkyActiv-D 2.2L is a turbocharged Euro 5 diesel engine capable of 188 hp and 450 Nm of torque. All the variants use the 6-speed SkyActiv Drive automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Also standard for all variants are the 19″ wheel size and G-Vectoring Control. The CX-8 in Malaysia will not get the 2.5L turbocharged petrol engine yet as that will depend on consumer demand. Furthermore, there also needs to be some product differentiation between the CX-8 and the CX-9 (which is a 7-seater powered by the 2.5L turbo).

Mazda CX-8_High Variant_6 Seater_2019The base 2.5L Mid variant is the only one with a 7-seater layout while the rest are 6-seaters. The 2.5L Mid High variant features captain seats in the second row with a walk-through cabin; both petrol and diesel High spec variants have captain seats and a dedicated large centre console / armrest with integrated cup holders and USB ports. With the layout choices available, the CX-8 has carved its own niche in the SUV segment.

Compared to the High variants, the 2.5L Mid and Mid Plus variants miss out on leather upholstery (the range-topping High variants get Nappa leather), 6-way powered front passenger seat, 360° view monitor, rear door sunshades, and head-up display.

Mazda CX-8 High Variant_i-ActivSense Safety_2019Further, the 2.5L Mid spec is not equipped with Mazda’s i-ActivSense safety technology. The Mid Plus spec however, does get the Adaptive Front Lighting System, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Smart City Brake Support (for front collision avoidance, with pedestrian detection). Meanwhile, the 2.5L 2WD High and 2.2L AWD High variants get the addition of Adaptive LED Headlights, Lane Departure Warning System, Lane Keep Assist System, Driver Attention Alert as well as Smart City Brake Support for the rear.

Standard safety kit for all includes six SRS airbags, Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, Traction Control System, Emergency Stop Signal, Hill Launch Assist, Auto Hold, Walk Away Locking, Mazda i-Stop idling technology, and Impact Absorbing Bonnet.

Mazda CX-8_Rear Climate Control_2019For passenger comfort and convenience, the CX-8 has a triple-zone climate control system as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, 7″ touchscreen display, MZD Connect infotainment system with voice command and multi-function Commander control, six speakers and up to four USB ports (the Mid Plus misses out on rear USB ports due to the captain seats.

Body colour choices are Soul Red Crystal, Machine Gray, Snowflake White Pearl, Deep Crystal Blue, Sonic Silver and Jet Black.

All Mazda vehicles are covered by a 5-year manufacturer warranty with 5 years of free maintenance, or 100,000 km (except for the BT-50 pick-up truck) according to the manufacturer’s standards inclusive of parts, lubricants and labour.

The Mazda CX-8 is open for booking with official prices to be announced soon.

VISTA or Volvo International Service Training Awards, a global competition for aftermarket technical service personnel is officially open for registration for all Volvo Trucks or Volvo Buses technicians. This year, up to 20,000 technicians from Volvo Trucks and Volvo Buses global dealer network, including from Malaysia, are expected to participate.

Volvo Trucks_Volvo Buses_VISTA_Volvo International Service Training AwardsThe VISTA competition not only aims to benchmark technical skills, but also to encourage teamwork and pride. By encouraging teamwork and skill enhancement, VISTA targets to further up-skill, attract and maintain skilled technicians. It also inspires self-improvement and competence development on technical skills, which in turn helps to increase technical knowledge and the quality of work and ultimately leads to improved customer service and greater customer satisfaction.

Volvo Trucks_Mitch Peden_Managing Director_Volvo MalaysiaMitch Peden, Managing Director of Volvo Malaysia said, “VISTA is much more than a competition. It is a simulation of the workshop environment that aims to build competency and share expertise, in addition to motivate and foster teamwork and collaboration among our technicians. It is also a way for Volvo Trucks to address the challenges of recruiting and retaining competent workshop technicians. At the end of the day our customers also benefit with better service to them through improved skills and teamwork enhancement.”

Having highly skilled and motivated technicians will enable Volvo Trucks’ workshops to carry out fault diagnosis and fix trucks’ problems in a timely manner at high quality standards. These skills are key in helping customers achieve maximum uptime for their trucks.

Volvo Trucks_Volvo Buses_VISTA_World Championship_Aftermarket Technical Services Competition“A top-of-the-line service network is crucial for our customers’ logistics and haulage business,” said Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks. “VISTA shows just how important our mechanics are and, at the same time, the competition improves our skills so we can deliver outstanding service provided by the best service crews in the world.”

The VISTA competition began in 1957 and was originally a competition held only in Sweden for Volvo technicians. By 1977, VISTA had spread across all continents, attracting authorized Volvo dealers from all over. Today, VISTA is a biennial event and the biggest competition for aftermarket technical service personnel in the world.

Volvo Trucks_Volvo Buses_VISTA_Aftermarket Technical Services CompetitionVISTA is open to all Volvo Trucks and Volvo Buses dealerships and their technicians worldwide. A total of 50 teams, with each team made up of four aftermarket service personnel, from Volvo Malaysia’s network of dealerships across the country will be taking part. The teams will need to complete several rounds of theoretical and technical tests before a winning team is announced.

The winning team from Malaysia, as well as winning teams from other participating countries, will meet in the semi-finals in Gothenburg, Sweden in May 2020. Several top teams will then proceed to compete for the final global championship in Turin, Italy in September 2020.

“The team from Volvo Trucks Malaysia that made it into the semi-finals in Sweden in the previous 2018/2019 VISTA competition had gained invaluable experiences from this global competition. Their improved knowledge and skills acquired from VISTA were applied in their day-to-day work and it has been successfully reflected in our employees’ competency level,” Peden added.
