Ford rolls out all-new Focus from Thai plant
The eagerly-anticipated all-new Ford Focus has moved one step closer to launch in this region with official production having just commenced at the new Ford Thailand Manufacturing (FTM) plant in Rayong, the fifth plant in the world to manufacture the new model.
Built at a cost of US$450 million, the FTM plant is the world’s fifth plant to manufacture the new Focus, and it will be supplying to markets of the ASEAN region (except Singapore), Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. The Focus had already been launched in the latter three markets last year, and the new Thai-built variants will take over from their European counterparts – in some cases with improved specs.
Developed in Europe for sale in over 120 markets worldwide, the all-new Ford Focus sits on Ford’s new global C-car platform, which will underpin at least 10 different vehicles around the world. Unlike the predecessor C1 platform, we have been told that it will not be shared with any Volvo or Mazda models. The Focus is the first model to roll out of FTM, which is capable of producing as many as six different models simultaneously.
The all-new Focus is slated for official launch in Thailand in August, with Malaysia and other markets to follow. Ford promises a high level of equipment for the Focus replete with class-leading features. We attended the Focus’ ASEAN media preview in Bangkok earlier this year.
