After some six years in the market, the first generation E83 BMW X3 finally retires to make way for its successor, the F25 which just debuted globally today. Built in South Carolina along with the X5 and X6, the X3 will be offered with a two model line-up at launch.

The entry level model is offered with diesel power, summoning the impressive 2.0-litre N47 D20 four-cylinder variable geometry turbo diesel to provide propulsion. Outputs are identical to the F10 520d, producing 184hp @ 4,000rpm and a max torque of 380Nm @ 1,750 – 2,750rpm for the xDrive20d variant. BMW claims a century sprint of 8.5 seconds en route to a 210kph v-max.

Alternatively, petrol power can be supplied with the aid of twin-scroll turbocharging and direct-injection by the 2,979cc N55 B30 engine that currently powers the 535i. Powering the xDrive35i, the N55 is rated to produce 306hp @ 5,800rpm and 400Nm @ 1,300rpm. A slightly different set of figures are quoted for the US market however, being 300hp @ 5,800rpm and 300 lb-ft (406Nm ) @ 1,200 – 5,00orpm.

American customers do not get the diesel, but are instead offered with the 3.0-litre N52 B30 engine for the xDrive28i as the entry level model. Named among Wards 10 Best Engines of the Year in 2006 and 2007, this engine still sees action in the X1 xDrive28i, the 730Li, and also the F10 528i offered in high-sulphur fuel markets. BMW quotes output figures of 240hp @ 6,600rpm and 230 lb-ft (312Nm) @ 2,600 – 3,000 rpm.

All three aforementioned variants of the X3 will be offered with BMW’s new 8-speed automatic transmission, though the xDrive20d is also offered with a 6-speed manual as an option. The manual version gets a gear shift indicator, and the xDrive20d is featured standard with Auto Start/Stop. The usual dose of BMW EfficientDynamics trickery offered in the X3 include brake energy regeneration, EPS Electric Power Steering, demand controlled ancillary components, intelligent lightweight construction and low rolling-resistance tyres.

The F25 X3’s suspension is said to be ‘completely redeveloped’ from the E83, featuring double wishbones up front and multi-link behind. Optionally available is Dynamic Damper Control, which allows allows the drive to choose between ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’, and ‘Sport+’ modes which changes damper maps, ECU response, and power steering assist.
