Volvo Car Malaysia Launches New S90 & V90

Volvo is making a statement and we should all listen. In fact, it’s 2 statements, called the all-new flagship S90 sedan and V90 wagon. Both the models sit on Volvo’s new SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform that’s also used for the new XC90, and are currently available in T5 and T6 R-Design trims, fully imported from Sweden.

Let’s start with the figures: the T5 is powered by a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder Drive-E engine capable of producing 254 hp and 350 Nm of torque, sent to the front wheels by an 8-speed Geartronic transmission. The T6 has the same 2-liter engine and gearbox but is more powerful due to the addition of a supercharger, which brings power output up to 320 hp and 400 Nm; peak torque comes in 700 rpm later (at 2,200 rpm) and ends at 5,400 rpm as opposed to 4,800 rpm in the T5. The T6 is also all-wheel drive.

Volvo S90 Sensus Connect, Malaysia Launch 2017Most notable inside the cabin is the sizeable 9″ portrait-orientated touchscreen for the Sensus Connect system. As briefed by Jonathan Disley, Vice President of Design at Volvo Cars China, at a previous Volvo talk on the company’s design philosophies, Sensus is more than just an infotainment system. It also serves not just to keep buttons on the center stack to a minimum but to allow for continuous improvements, customization and flexibility. Some of these functions are replicated in the steering-mounted buttons and are also accessible with Voice Control.

Like the interior, the exterior also mimics Volvo’s natural obsession with Scandinavian subtlety and elegance. Size-wise, the S90 is the longest in its class but the sleek, low stance belie that. Aside from the striking Thor’s hammer LED lights, the S90 and V90 sport a front grille reminiscent of the classic P1800 sports car (made famous in The Saint TV series), albeit with blacked out vertical fins; the T6 models have a different grille design.

The T6 also features a Active Bending Lights and Active High Beam Control, sport-tuned chassis, bigger and wider tires, integrated fog lights, carbon fiber inlays, as well as R-Design wheels, Nubuck and perforated Nappa leather seats, and steering wheel with paddle shifters.

The S90 and V90 are available in Onyx Black, Ice White, Osmium Grey and Bright Silver; with Mussel Blue available only for the T5 and Bursting Blue only for the T6.

Prices are RM 388,888 for S90 T5, RM 393,888 for V90 T5, and RM 453,888 for S90 T6 R-Design and RM 458,888 for V90 T6 R-Design. The prices quoted are on-the-road without insurance and includes a 5-year / 120,000 km warranty.

Volvo Car Malaysia is planning to introduce the T8 variant later this year.
