Perodua’s 2016 Market Share Hits All-Time High

L-R: YBhg Datuk Ahmad Suhaimi Hashim, President of Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, Mr Masanori Takahashi, President of Perodua Auto Corporation Sdn Bhd, YBhg Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh, President & CEO of Perodua, YBhg Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad, Vice President Perodua Auto Corporation Sdn Bhd and YBhg Dato' Dr. Zahari Husin, Managing Director of Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd

Perodua had a good 2016, selling over 207,100 vehicles and with a total industry volume of 579,600 units last year, this puts Perodua’s market share at approximately 35.7% – the highest market share in the compact carmaker’s history.

Perodua President & CEO YBhg Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh“Despite 2016 being a challenging year, we are pleased to announce that all our models; from the Bezza to the Alza; are number one in their respective categories,” Perodua President & CEO, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said.

“Despite being launched in July, we are happy to announce that the Bezza sold over 36,000 units for 2016, making it the number one compact sedan in the ‘A’ segment. We wish to thank the Malaysian public for their trust and endorsement of our brand, we will continue to further improve ourselves for your motoring needs” he added.

Subsequent to achieving an estimated market share of 35.7% for 2016, Perodua is the country’s most preferred automotive brand for 11 years running. On the total industry volume for 2017, Perodua sees a slight improvement with a 2% growth to 590,000 units, from 579,600 in 2016.

“Based on this projection, we target to capture 34% of the market share or to sell 202,000 vehicles in 2017. The market has been challenging for 2016 due to a tough market where consumers were still adjusting to challenging economic condition, the prudent lending guidelines and the stiff competition by nearly all auto players.” Datuk Aminar said.

Despite the tough sales environment locally, Perodua grew its export volume by 6% in 2016 to 4,700 units from 4,400 units in 2015; with over 60% of its exports are to Indonesia.

On profitability, Aminar said that Perodua would focus more on its after-sales for revenue growth. “We are investing more in our after-sales business to further improve our earnings. In fact, 2016 saw many records being made with over 2 million vehicles visiting our service centres nationwide,” Datuk Aminar said. Perodua recorded a service revenue of RM 682 million compared with RM 600 million in 2015.

Perodua also produced fewer vehicles in 2016 i.e. 213,000 vs 229,000 in 2015, as a result of the softer market. “The reduction in production is in-line with the reduced sales in 2016. For 2017, we foresee production to be further reduced to 197,000 which is reflective of our sales target for the year,” Datuk Aminar said.
