The MX-5, Mazda’s iconic roadster renowned for successfully capturing the essence of pure unadulterated driving fun, was globally renewed for a fourth model generation last year. Incorporating Mazda’s latest-generation SkyActiv technologies, the latest ND-generation MX-5 has arrived in Malaysia having been officially launched by local distributors Bermaz Motor Sdn Bhd.

The new MX-5 arrives powered by Mazda’s 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G petrol direct injection engine sending 158hp and 200Nm worth of outputs astern via a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters; a manual version is promised for a later date. This is the only longitudinal installation of a SkyActiv engine to date, and the MX-5’s transmissions are therefore not common with other models of Mazda’s current SkyActiv model family.

What the MX-5 does share with other SkyActiv models, however, is a meticulous attention to detail and generous usage of advanced materials to reduce weight, helping the MX-5 to weigh in at 1,080kg. Its all-new developed-from-scratch SkyActiv chassis is follows a familiar basic template to predecessor models with double wishbone suspension up front and multi links at the rear. For the first time, however, electric assist is deployed at the steering.

Only a soft top convertible variant is available, but plans are in place for a lightweight, automated fully retractable hard top to be introduced at a later date.

Priced at RM226,376.32 with insurance for the automatic version, the new MX-5 comes standard with keyless entry, Mazda Connect infotainment system with a 7-inch centre screen, 9 Bose speakers, auto climate control, auto cruise, and self-leveling adaptive LED headlamps. Stability control and lane departure warning are among features incorporated for safety.
