BMW 520d (F10) now with new b47 engine
BMW Group Malaysia has unveiled an improved version of the F10 520d updated with the company’s latest and all-new b47 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine. The new variant debuted at the ongoing BMW Malaysian Open 2015 tennis tournament currently held in Kuala Lumpur and it replaces the outgoing N47-powered 520d.
First seen in Malaysia powering the facelifted X3 xDrive20d, the all-new b47 is part of a new generation of modular BMW powertrains underpinned by all-aluminium construction. Replacing the 184hp/380Nm cast iron N47 of the same capacity, the new 1,995cc four-pot pushes out an improved 190hp and 400Nm.
Mated with the now-familiar 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF, the new engine propels the updated 520d from rest to 100kph in 7.7 seconds on to a top speed of 233kph. Fitted with BMW’s usual suite of EfficientDynamics innovations, the new 520d manages to improve on its predecessor’s already excellent fuel consumption by nearly nine percent, being tested at 4.1 l/100km in the combined cycle (CO2 – 109 g/km).
The new engine is surrounded by largely familiar components of the F10 chassis, which features advanced front double wishbone suspension and electric power steering. As before, adaptive dampers remain standard in the 520d and amenities already fitted in the outgoing model such as Adaptive LED Headlights, active high beam assistant, 10.25 multifunction virtual instrument panel, and a full suite of mobility services and driver assist systems from BMW ConnectedDrive.
Pricing of the updated BMW 520d, which will be available from 1 April onwards, remain unchanged from before at RM354,800 on-the-road without insurance, but to mark the new engine’s introduction, BMW is specifying the first 50 units in a unique Sport trim featuring M Aerodynamic exterior package, 18″ double-spoke light alloy wheels, and M leather steering.
